If a cats really scared they run away/crawl into the smallest hole or nook they can find and fit in, growl, hiss even shit and pee on themselves to make you (the perceived predator) lose interest.

People associate this posture with being scared because of the media , Google "Halloween cat" or "scared cat" and you'll find a lot of images that look very similar. As far as I know this is actually a defensive Posture. he was defending himself from a pair of socks, lol.

@roadrunner2131 It wasn't an "attack" on the video, and the book part I think can't be made into anything but good advice to new pet owners :) I hate mainstream media, the quality of information rarely doesn't suck. And yes it's posturing, it's not necessarily defensive though, aggressors do it too, why fight and possibly get hurt if you have a chance of just intimidating the opposition. And it's used while playing of course :) Did some work with animal amb., saw many a terrified cat. (GLOVES!)

@InnSewerAnts The cat IS scared or intimidated. Hence him puffing up to look bigger. Running away is a last resort. I've had cats all my life, currently my family has 9 of them. I used to read books like crazy about them. Something has him startled and he's showing confidence and aggression. He however has slight bend in the hind legs meaning he is unsure about attacking or running away.

@doryphish333 You're just describing flight/fight mechanism, being scared is not necessarily in the equation. Posturing is used in playfighting as well, one of my cats actually uses it to engage me to play with her. I've had cats all my life as well and worked for the animal ambulance for a while. If you think that cat must be scared just because the posturing then I would still recommend a good cat behaviour book. I've rescued scared even terrified cats. This isn't it. Cheers.

My cat got freaked out over a pair of my shoes one time. He walked by them, and for some reason they didn't look right. He decided to do war with them, and kept backing up and coming forward to box at them, and then jumped back, and came forward to box them again.

He was terrified, you could tell; but he just wouldn't leave them alone. Finally, after he determined that they weren't going to "get him", he walked away. But is was so funny I laughed until I cried.
