of course there is..thats one of the problems you can encounter when using a rotary, hence why u have to know what ur doing with it. it can even be seen when someone polishes there car every weekend, it burns through to the metal.
the whole point od to add another layer by polishing a wax on top of the paint but yes it is posible to go through the clear coat especialy on the edges
@ mrgaryme. "Mop" in a old term! The modern pad is made of different types of sponge. The one he has there is white in colour, which in that case is most likely a medium density pad for removing light swirls and marring.
polishing takes out the fine scratches and imperfections in the paint, then you apply a wax over the top of that to protect it from getting further imperfections.
and there goes clear coat

Can you buff the plastic from the lights to remove the scratches?
msp5a3 2 years ago
yes.
In many ocasions, you get a much better result by water sanding it and then buffing.

I wonder if there is such a thing as over detailing? I mean, with all the polishing you might run out of clearcoat and paint after awhile
piancu 2 years ago
That's why the pro's use a PTG, paint thickness gauge

Does anyone know what brand of Polish (and what different grades) Paul uses?
ToddDavis5050 2 years ago
Looks like 3M Ultrafine is what he's using in the video. No idea if he still uses it.

That is an makita Rotary machine
supermotard69 2 years ago
Is that an orbital or rotary polisher he is using?
Nikateer 3 years ago
rotary. Rotary is BETTER but more dangerous to use. Proffesional's use it. Orbitals are merely "safer"

remember seeing this car at mph 2007, my little bro even got to sit in it, had no idea it was you who had made her looking as lucious as she was! :D

The high rotation of the machine, burns the paint slowly...

There's no burning involved. Not unless there is a mistake and the panel will require a repaint.
Polishing is the act of abrading the surface of the paint. On a microscopic level, it's like sandpaper. In fact, the two are very similar.
HoldenCaulfield04 3 years ago
This is why you treat the panel first.
So your not actualy polishing the paint, but the protecting product.
A good valet'er should never polish directly to paint. Other whise he / she is indeed damaging the paint microscopicly.
Hence a respray would be required after a few years of polishing.
vectorm1299 3 years ago
That is an amazing amount of working time with that polish. Oh, and good work once again Paul.
HoldenCaulfield04 3 years ago
I love his techniques with the rotary, the finesse he moves the rotary effortlessly along the panel is incredible !
