When Aerosmith cleaned up their act, is when it paid off to see them live. I loved them then and now. Ted Nugent was crazy awesome back in the 70s. I guess it was all the sex appeal. -3 Steven and Joe -3
I love them all dearly, but so many years later, this just looks like a lesson: This is your brain on drugs. Nugent's anti-alcohol/drug stance paid off in the form of endurance in a performance. Perhaps the audience was all as high as Aerosmith and didn't notice, but it certainly is noticeable now.
@:20, I just love Ted's silly grin saying "No seriously guys, I don't need any of that dope, man....I'm good. Wouldn't mind a little head from each of your girlfriends, though....
COTTON BOWL TEXAS JAM 1978 ..It was 120 degrees .. People were dropping like FLYS. I could have bought weed - coke- speed- LSD-25- Crystal Meth, both brown and white. but there was NO ICE at any price.
The last thing I remember was swimming in the fountains and trowing dirt clods at Big Tex... Then next thing I remember was my friend waking me up, telling me to get out of the car that we were home, back in Louisiana 240 miles away at my parents house.
Ted used to be cool before he got political now every time he opens his mouth he sounds like a fool. Stick to playing music you can win me back. Aerosmith is still as awesome as ever.
@00sopo Joe is a great guitar player- It would be a matter of opinion as to who rips harder. I saw them both many times in the 70's, and I would choose Ted - hands down. I love Joe, but Ted always put on a better show. Aerosmith played well at Cal Jam 2, but at an arena show you could count on them being loaded to the point where the show would be short ( 1 hour, 15 -30 min.), cause they needed to get off stage to do mass blow. Nugent always shredded for 2 and a half hours- incredibly hot...
yeah, ted took the solo from brad, because he wants to top aerosmith, which he could never do! his solo did rip,but brad's solo would have been waaayy better!
besides, those guys were so high that it probably didn't phase them!
nonetheless, great performance by a bunch of guys who love to play loud, and rock the fuck out!
@gibsongold1970 To compare the rhythm guitar player, Brad W to Ted is a laugh. Ted commanded huge respect back then- Whitford was a support musician. Why have Nugent even come out on stage, if you're not going to give him the lead. I saw both bands many times in the 70's, and I never saw Brad play anything waaaay better than the great Ted Nugent!!!!. Aerosmith and Nugent were my 2 favorites back then- but Ted owned the crowd and Aerosmith was sooooooo high, they could barely perform live.
@Mi37591 Takes one to know one....... You must be young, cause I don't remember anyone who liked Aeromith, and disliked Ted. They always complemented each other back in the day. Aerosmith and Queen were always competing for the title of "King of New York", but Ted and Aerosmith were peas in a pod. Listen to Double live Gonzo, and tell me Ted doesn't shred
tyler is not mad with ted...why the fuck are you thinking that???... he is just so high that everythings around him means shit in that point... including ted of course...
and ted by the way undestands that... and he is cool about it.
@sicoticosandro Yeah Steven was "Fucked up Beyond all Recgnition":) And that's right everything around was nothing but shit for him :) But other guys were also fucked up totally:) You know what? If I were so much high as Steven or Joe I coulnd't play or sing anything:)
@Thorgal20 I saw Aeromith live in 1978, and Joe was so loaded, that he couldn't stand up- he had to partially sit on a cabinet to hold himself up. The show only lasted about an hour
@sicoticosandro I'm sure heat exhaustion played a role too. Playing at the Cotton Bowl in the middle of Summer took it's toll on musicians and audience members. They still sounded awesome in spite of the drugs and heat. I can't believe how good Ted sounded in the mix.
I agree, Ted is a ponzi guitarist, back in the 70's when he used to creep onto other guitarist stage to challenge them (image the arrogance) ,Shawn Lane and Frank Marino were a few guitarist who 'tuned' him but good. This kind of shit nearly caused full scale brawls between road crews as well.
Ted is a unique "rugged" individual with a mouth that serves as a distraction device from his guitar playing. These days he is absolutely the essence of "OLD SCHOOL" guitar playing.
@HALEYSABAI Nugent had every reason to be arrogant- He worked the crowd better than anyone. There are great guitarists everywhere, but that doesn't necessarily sell tickets. I believe you when you say Frank Marino "tuned" him, but in reality, Mahogany Rush was a cover band that played arena shows. If Frank could have written half the great songs that Ted did, he would have been a house hold name, considering what a ripper he was every performance.
Yes, this is Ted the hypocrite doubling as Ted the Professional. He wasn't about to back out at the last minute and let the fans down. Tyler blows off Nugent before the they take the stage; Nugent shrugs his shoulders and he goes on with the rest of the band. Between Nugent and Tyler, the egos alone should have displaced the rest of the band.
yea who he challenge amitures. did he ever challange jimmy page,SRV, EDDIE V.H. SLOW HAND,STEVE VAI, JOE S. HES GOOD BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO STRING THEIR GUIATRS
@ppbsb I've seen every guitar player you listed many times because I'm old. Nugent may not fit into this list, but it is partially because he has his own style. Joe S. has never rocked a stadium the way Nugent did and if you want to make comparisons, Eddie Van Halen and Joe S. are sort of similar in style, but Eddie is a virtuoso, with endless creativity, and I have been bored many times by satriani shows (never bored by Ted). Steve Vai who I love, not always that hot. SRV is the best live.
It's true, Ted started his solo a split second before Steve called on Mr. Whitford. as a musician, I've had this happen to me AND I did it to another player, in improv jams. it just happens. I don't think Ted did it on purpose, a song in a live setting is like a rollercoaster, it doesn't stop until it's over. NO DO-OVERS! By the way, Ted was the "guest" on stage, he probably figured that Steve was going to say' "Mr. Nugent"!!!
It'a Weird Think Half Of Them Were Goin' Through So Much Shit At This Time In Their Career But They Still Sound Amazingly Awesome As Fuck!! I Wish I Was Alive At The Is Time. I Would Have Killed To See Those Guys On Stage! "Live! Bootleg" Is My Favorite Aerosmith Album. Rock On Aerosmith!
Ted is a pure showman and he loves to show off his skills. I've seen him around 12 times and on a few occassions he has prompted other guitarists to challenge him. He wins everytime. When he was in Beaumont. Texas touring Weekend warriors he stopped by our local rock club and duled with a local guitar player until 4:00 am. It was a wonderful memory.

I did however get to 4 other Texxas Jams in the next few years afterwards. Thanks for posting this awesome clip!
I remember seeing this years ago and thinking that this was probably not the bands idea by the look on their faces and attitudes. Joe P was never a big fan of competion anyway. I remember the famous store from EVH of when he met Joe and the cold shoulder he got.
@jhg1234 Yeah, Edward went to shake Joe's hand, and Joe just looked at him and walked away. I guess year's later he made up for it by going up and talking to Edward, and I guess they had a good conversation. Joe complimented Ed's playing, but this was after he was clean. Drugs and alcohol can really alter your perception and personality, and it affected Joe's.
Uncle Ted and the 'Smiths....awesome. AWESOME!! I wish I had seen this. I'm surprised Ted was there cause he does hate drugs and smoking. He considers the human body to be a temple. He's right...but they sound unbelievable jammin' together!
