I own a RX8 now and it is a great everyday car...comparing it to my Nizzan 350z I had before..the Mazda is a lot more usable especially on bumpy country roads. I do miss the torque of the Nissan and the fuel consumption is 20mpg so that hurts and it is great to be able to take 4 people in the car.....they are a bargain second hand.
love the mazda rx8, other than the mpg, i am not complaining i love my ride and with my 20's its still amaing! 04 6speed has the best control not with my wheels but damn loves to hug the road
Do get it if u can. So far, I only heard the 04-05 models having some problems. The later ones are better, more so for the facelifted models. And please don't compare RX8 with its older brother, RX7. Even rotary tuners such as Knightsports also feel that it is unfair to compare as RX7 was designed to be a pure sports car for racing and more hardcore while the RX8 is more of a practical family sports car for daily usage and lots of fun driving. ;)
@slyrez The car is in the process of being discontinued. At the auto show the Mazda Rep. I talked to said their dealership was not getting anymore new RX-8s.
Sexy good looks, real back seats, communicative steering....sigh. If only this car had a piston engine it'd be one of the all time greats. I'd take a naturally aspirate run of the mill 4cyl over that wankel
Well said. Sometimes, I don't understand why some like to write this car off. It is not the perfect or fastest sports coupe around but it sure handles very well and also very fun to drive. If u want more power, TC or SC is a good alternative. And, it is cheaper, comfortable and practical than other coupes, what more can one ask for?
It wasn't designed for everyone, but meant for drivers who appreciate rotary engine. And one shouldn't bother too much about fuel consumption when driving a sports car. Last but not least, it is certainly much more powerful than most 4cy cars of similar engine cc and type.

I just dont see how they get such bad mileage, when i can go out buy a huge 4x4 truck/diesel.... Corvette, 370z, pretty much any sport coupe and get better mpg. cmon a big liter V8 Corvette getting better mileage than a small rx-8's 1.3L?
i find these cars to be forgotten about cause they really arent the best choice, heard of oil burning off on brand new cars. wheel bearings/seals going out way before it reaches 100,000 Had a buddy buy a rx-8 and it only has like 50 or 60,000 miles on it and hes had to replace a few things (cost him 1500) Clutch was bad, wheel seals gone, and a couple other things. He also said they are terrible on gas mileage, he was told his car could get 22mpg and hes getting 17s. WTF!!!
@FastZrider That's because they are made to burn oil. That's how the lubricate their seals. What you thought was a problem is something the is supposed to happen. People have went 200K+ miles with these cars on their original engines. Read all about it on rx8club
@891trigfoot you supposedly have to replace seals every 100,000ks. HOWEVER i know people who haven't had to, and it sometimes (often) is a more of a "well its that time, i should do it" sort of thing. Those that DO (or have to) often have the engine rebuilt at he same time because you have to pull the engine apart to do the replacement. So why not?
@davinpenh - The bigger question is if you want to drive a RWD sports car in the winter. @EverydayDriver ohh i seee :) but i heard many ppl says that rx8 get stuck or the engine wont work at all when it get really cold as in winter? is that truth tho? anyways thanks for help :)
@EverydayDriver I live in Northern Ontario Canada. I have a 2005 RX8 that i purchased last summer. I bought studded tires and the car was quite able to handle the weather. People underestimate the car, but you have to understand that it is so perfectly balanced that even if you start to lose traction, it is VERY easy to keep in control. Also, limited slip dif. will push you anywhere. BUT, more than 3 inches of snow and you might as well stay home.....
@davinpenh hey man, u can drive it in winter, i drove mine for a couple years in the winter, just buy winter tires. i bought 17 inch steel wheels and winter tires for them. u just gotta be careful when driving
@davinpenh to be honest with you, i had a lot of problems with rx-8s. I had one 04 and one 07. the 04 got messed up by the dealership, they would fix one thing and break another in the process. it was a lease so i gave it back. the 07 had one major problem that the dealership didn't want to fix. the differential was shot after about 35,000km/s. i never used the 07 in the winter. Both of the rx-8's i had were manual. I ended up selling the 07 and i bought an infiniti g35 instead. love that car.
lol don't buy an rx-8 u will be kicking urself. the engines don't last. there are lots of problems and the car has no resale, at least in the country i live in. they don't sell, u can buy them brand new and they offer 12,000$ rebates on them cuz the dealerships aren't selling them
People complain about how the RX8 is unreliable and is bad on gas, then go buy a corolla. My RX8 has well over 150K and still pulling strong. Oil change every 3K, check the oil every morning, use 93 Octane, redline once a day to keep the Carbon away, and warm it up, IT IS THAT SIMPLE.
@vybzcartel1 for USDM 93 octane can.. but JDM Minimum 98.. here in malaysia, maximum is only 97 octane and most of 8 is msia is JDM 8.. im using 95 octane and still can run but have to take good care of it.
@Ekmurl Yea as long as you are running over 91 Octane it shouldn't matter, but I was kind of leaning towards the folks in the United States. Wish we had higher octane gas in the US lol.
@cbr600rrturbo I have never had a rebuild since I had it, as far as the oil goes, if you drive it like your supposed to, you may have to refill your oil maybe 3-4 times between oil changes. So what I do is always keep 2 quarts of oil in the trunk and check the oil level before I drive for the day. Oil burns only because of the design, it uses motor oil to lubricate the apex seals within the housing. Just remember if you do get RX8, stick to 5w20 non synthetic and you shouldn't have any issues.
@vybzcartel1 This is very debatable. The RX-8 was advertised to use 5W-30 everywhere else except in the U.S. I personally use 5W-30 in mine. I'm not saying you're wrong ,but I just want to alert others that there is a large debate between '8 owners on what oil to use. Hell, some even use full synthetic without any problems.
@MrRectalRanger Yea I did read forums and seen that everywhere else besides the US use 5w30. I mean it's all up to the owner whether they decide to experiment, or just go with what is recommended.
@vybzcartel1 I drove an rx8 for about a year... bought one used for 6k.... will never buy again the only people that like these car are the ones that havent got rid of them yet, do yourself a favor and get rid of this car and buy a better vehicile cause the 13b rew sux
@Enj01 Well apparently you bought an RX8 with an FD3S motor in it. Yes the car needs maintenance, but it's not for the lazy person that doesn't do maintenance. So, I guess when I get rid of this car and buy a "comparable" sports car I will be much happier. The only cars that are as fun in the price range are S2K, and Miata. Please don't mention Camaro,Mustang,350Z, etc. because they are not as fun to drive, believe it.
@james6speed I already corrected it i meant to say renesis engine and anyway man ive had 2 fc rx7's b4 this (one a vert that was t2 swapped... other a spare) im just saying my rx7 was alot faster then my rx8 but not as reliable... i woulda kept my rx8 if it got good gas mileage but 14mpg city is not good and dont go reading me brochure #s ether, measure ur next full tank and i guarantee it will not be over 20mpg if it is u dont know how to count.... i will buy another fc later on
@vybzcartel1 I only had my RX8 for just over a year,,,what a great car and well built and well finished by the Mazda people. It certainly was a drivers car and no question,,for a fairly light sports car it was brutal on gas but I sure didn't have any issues as far as reliability.
We plan on keeping our Chevy family car for another year then it's the Hyundai Genesis coupe, just a great machine, best warranty and I haven't read a bad review, check the word that's out on the 2013,,awesome !!
@jeanmunn Yea man the MPG sucks because of the rotary, but you don't really think about it when you are driving this car. From a owner to another you know exactly what I am talking about lol
Mazda? Gutless... no torque... loves drinking oil every 3000 miles. Nisssan Z and the Infinit G kick it with lots of torque and speed... worth every premium cent... plus the sound... rocks... which is why they outsell every sports car.
@gtakilla22 - With a G or Z, you don't need a turbo and constant oil changes. And if I wanted to add a turbo or super charger, I'd add it on my G for 400 hp+. The good news about the RX-8 is it's small tires... so you don't have to spend $1200 on Michelin Pilot tires every year 9000 miles. The stock tires on the G, would spin off the line because of the torque and engage the traction control. With the pilots, they grab and tear off the line.
I want a Rx-8 so badly. It looks so damn nice stock, I mean all you have to do is lower it. but I'm in my childish stage where I can't pick if i want power save gas or fuck it all and get my dream car the Rx-8 :(
How much stupit mus be or have no knowledge about cars to buy an RX-8. I checked the mazda rx-8 club site and all discusions was about engine problems and engine blows.
@FrappeTsigaro If you know how to take care of your rx8, you'll be fine... Mine is hitting 100k in miles, still runs strong, and its modded. Like i said, you wont understand an 8 untill you own one.
The RX-8 has a very "unique" look like Todd said. It is also remarkably affordable and 04's can e found for under 10K. I do wonder however, since it is a RWD layout can it make it through snow and some hills during the winter or this one of those cars that need California weather?
If u take care of it, it works just as fine as other cars... There are quite a few RX8s out there whose mileage are over 100 000km and the engines and the cars are still ok.. no major problems.
I have owned the mazda rx8 for 5 years. It isnt the most powerful or even close to the more powerful units,,,,,but man this car really handles well and rides very smooth.I would only wish that Mazda could get maybe 275-290 hp in it,,,the this car would be a dream come through
@OTTODDROCK I could tune it to be range of power, without an expensive turbo or supercharger. You might even get a couple miles per gallon more out of it. Or...just get a turbo for it and go for more HP!
clip an apex? at 30mph? im sorry but american car reviews have on big problem... they have to drive around at 30mph which is just a bit... just doesnt work for 'sportcars'.
Rx-8 Pros: Rear body Styling. Cons: Very Poor Fuel economy for the HP you get, the body has too many round shapes it doesnt look sharp and sporty much and burning oil, which I just learnt.
how is the RX8 just a hardtop with MX-5? the two cars are miles apart! The RX8 has a rotary engine, is far longer, gets much worse gas mileage and is just bigger in general. it also doesn't handle quite as well as the Miata
@AllanXRLTS3 I'm fairly certain an object spinning against a chamber 7000 times per minute will not be devoid of any wear and tear; moving parts or otherwise.
ive been watching a lot of your reviews and to be honest you guys copy top gear with everything and the guy with the long hair just says everything clarkson says just stated differently like with the gtr, you guys started out with the video...just like top gear, then with the evo you guys said it has 4 seats so you can terrify the whole family...just like top gear, and 2:23 is another perfect example, i like you guys, so be unique and stop pretending to be american clarkson.
tht guy is retarded. rx8 way faster than the mx5 way better handling. quit bitchin about the styling its awesome #1 #2 who cares. also renesis motors are way more reliable and u get 9k!!
Was the RX-8 modded in any way aside from being lowered? I know most RX-8s don't come with rear spoilers as standard.
Also, people complain about the lack of low end torque on the rotary, but I disagree. Sure, there isn't much, but it's usable if you don't shift like an idiot, which you shouldn't on a track. I think people are complaining about the torque difference after upshifting from 9000RPM, because that's where you feel the torque disappearing. Drive it like a man and keep the revs high.
to the guy in red with the long hair - dude the interior and exterior designs set it apart from the "usual" coupe on the road. you're the first and ONLY person I heard not liking the RX8. The RX8 is simply for those who appreciate modern design and do not want to blend in with the crowd
Hey I want this car as a first car. I've read hoe it Burns a lot of oil and gas and you do have to keep up with the car a lot. But I kinda want my car to do that to teach me how to take care of my own cars. How's insurance for it cause my parents are worried about it. Let me know what you guys think Oh BTW im thinking of a 04 model
I drive and autocross my Rx8 and I love it. The only thing I do not like is that it only does 16 mpg. Appart from that thought the car is amazing and at the autocross track it puts a lot of cars to shame.
something I would like to add is the rx8 was not meant to replace the rx7 name or surpass it. Think of it as corvettes and camaros. Same idea; big engine, rwd muscle cars but one is meant to be easier to live with. I don't think anyone at mazda would say that was the intentions of the rx8
Rotary's are made to be driven like someone stole them. Redline a day keeps a rebuild away. And with a rotary, how could someone resist redlining it ALL the time?? Rotary's are addicting as can be. VERY fun and can take punishment like one wouldn't believe.
Would you ever recommend an RX8 for a 16yr old? I'd love a sportier car, the RX8 seems to be the only affordable RWD under 10k. Even if it's cheaper I'll probably spend the money I save on gas -.-, do you guys feel the car is reliable enough? especially the early model's? They say rotaries are unreliable, but I talked to a Rx7 owning buddy he said there perfectly ok If maintained religiously. He compared the to '' a Fine woman''
@Heco94 all of the rumours of them being unreliable, are from people who did not properly maintain them. Rotaries need to be driven reguarly, knowledge about the flooding, it burns oil regularly, etc. Not redlining the car at 9000RPM ever, also can cause major damage to the rotaries.
@Heco94 Make sure you keep oil in it. Get it serviced when scheledued, after longer drives open the hood and leave it cracked, redline it often (believe me im not trying to get you tickets), make sure there is enough oil in it. Look up rx8s on the forums and im sure they have owner advice
Sorry but even though you said decent thing about the RX8, I disagree with you testing and critiquing a modified and outdated model. I feel it probably doesn't give you the right to define the RX8 as a car, but only a modified RX8.
I think this set of reviews is good but missing the e46 m3 because a used one can be found for around the same as the used Genisis or G37 and I think would fit this range very well. with that being said I enjoy your reviews.
@bigbuggaman - Todd would probably prefer the 300zx since he has owned one and loved it. Paul would find it more of a toss-up between the two.
If you can, we recommend driving both of them in the same day... both the 300zx and RX8 are very unique and one of them is bound to feel like a clear winner for you. RX8 will definitely feel smaller than the Z.
Yeah i am a big rotary fan and the 300zx is like in the charts with the greatest cars ever built in the 90's but i would go with the rx8 any day but you have to know what you are getting into b4 you get a rotary and yeah the power is alright or maybe cause my 2nd gear has grinding problems at high rpms with my rx8 but once you hit a corner it will always put a smile on your face
Way too much talking about the same shit. They said the same thing like 3 different ways, all having the same meaning! UGH! I had to skip a couple minutes in the middle because it was getting so irritating.
@Katlunazul - Top Gear is the best car show in the world. We are not trying to be Top Gear, because no one is! And we never copy Top Gear.
Having said that, different car reviewers often say the same kind of things about a car. If either of the guys say something similar to Top Gear, does that mean it isn't what they actually think?
@29ryan49 The engines are plenty reliable, it's the owners that aren't reliable. If you don't know what you're doing, or you don't keep up the maintenence on it...you will kill it. That's how they got a bad name in the first place. It's a shame because they are amazingly good engines, they catch a lot of flack for no good reason.

@vybzcartel1 thank you sir for your time :)
cbr600rrturbo 4 months ago
@cbr600rrturbo No problem
vybzcartel1 4 months ago
@vybzcartel1 This is very debatable. The RX-8 was advertised to use 5W-30 everywhere else except in the U.S. I personally use 5W-30 in mine. I'm not saying you're wrong ,but I just want to alert others that there is a large debate between '8 owners on what oil to use. Hell, some even use full synthetic without any problems.
MrRectalRanger 4 months ago
@MrRectalRanger Yea I did read forums and seen that everywhere else besides the US use 5w30. I mean it's all up to the owner whether they decide to experiment, or just go with what is recommended.

@vybzcartel1 I drove an rx8 for about a year... bought one used for 6k.... will never buy again the only people that like these car are the ones that havent got rid of them yet, do yourself a favor and get rid of this car and buy a better vehicile cause the 13b rew sux
Enj01 2 months ago
@Enj01 Well bro I love my RX-8, it isn't for everyone. btw it doesn't use a 13B-REW, the FD RX-7 uses that motor...
vybzcartel1 2 months ago
@vybzcartel1 Renesis or w/e my bad lol i was up late trolling haha
Enj01 2 months ago
@Enj01 Well apparently you bought an RX8 with an FD3S motor in it. Yes the car needs maintenance, but it's not for the lazy person that doesn't do maintenance. So, I guess when I get rid of this car and buy a "comparable" sports car I will be much happier. The only cars that are as fun in the price range are S2K, and Miata. Please don't mention Camaro,Mustang,350Z, etc. because they are not as fun to drive, believe it.
james6speed 2 months ago
@james6speed I already corrected it i meant to say renesis engine and anyway man ive had 2 fc rx7's b4 this (one a vert that was t2 swapped... other a spare) im just saying my rx7 was alot faster then my rx8 but not as reliable... i woulda kept my rx8 if it got good gas mileage but 14mpg city is not good and dont go reading me brochure #s ether, measure ur next full tank and i guarantee it will not be over 20mpg if it is u dont know how to count.... i will buy another fc later on
Enj01 2 months ago
@vybzcartel1 I only had my RX8 for just over a year,,,what a great car and well built and well finished by the Mazda people. It certainly was a drivers car and no question,,for a fairly light sports car it was brutal on gas but I sure didn't have any issues as far as reliability.
We plan on keeping our Chevy family car for another year then it's the Hyundai Genesis coupe, just a great machine, best warranty and I haven't read a bad review, check the word that's out on the 2013,,awesome !!
jeanmunn 1 month ago
@jeanmunn Yea man the MPG sucks because of the rotary, but you don't really think about it when you are driving this car. From a owner to another you know exactly what I am talking about lol

Mazda? Gutless... no torque... loves drinking oil every 3000 miles. Nisssan Z and the Infinit G kick it with lots of torque and speed... worth every premium cent... plus the sound... rocks... which is why they outsell every sports car.
wavesdvdcom 6 months ago
@wavesdvdcom They design of the rotary is meant to burn oil. If it's so "gutless" slap a turbo on it.
gtakilla22 6 months ago
@gtakilla22 - With a G or Z, you don't need a turbo and constant oil changes. And if I wanted to add a turbo or super charger, I'd add it on my G for 400 hp+. The good news about the RX-8 is it's small tires... so you don't have to spend $1200 on Michelin Pilot tires every year 9000 miles. The stock tires on the G, would spin off the line because of the torque and engage the traction control. With the pilots, they grab and tear off the line.

I want a Rx-8 so badly. It looks so damn nice stock, I mean all you have to do is lower it. but I'm in my childish stage where I can't pick if i want power save gas or fuck it all and get my dream car the Rx-8 :(
Inconceivable279 6 months ago
How much stupit mus be or have no knowledge about cars to buy an RX-8. I checked the mazda rx-8 club site and all discusions was about engine problems and engine blows.
FrappeTsigaro 7 months ago
@FrappeTsigaro If you know how to take care of your rx8, you'll be fine... Mine is hitting 100k in miles, still runs strong, and its modded. Like i said, you wont understand an 8 untill you own one.
TheRareone777 6 months ago
The RX-8 has a very "unique" look like Todd said. It is also remarkably affordable and 04's can e found for under 10K. I do wonder however, since it is a RWD layout can it make it through snow and some hills during the winter or this one of those cars that need California weather?
chambois323 7 months ago
i feel like this review is extremely bias because they used a 2004 Mazda rx-8 yet the Hyundai and the Infinity are brand new...... -.-
jakeman165 7 months ago
Too many problems? I have 70K on my engine with zero problems. People just don't maintain them and then blame the problems on the car.

RX8 engines have sooo many problems...
vex123 8 months ago
@vex123
If u take care of it, it works just as fine as other cars... There are quite a few RX8s out there whose mileage are over 100 000km and the engines and the cars are still ok.. no major problems.
leolim79 8 months ago
I have owned the mazda rx8 for 5 years. It isnt the most powerful or even close to the more powerful units,,,,,but man this car really handles well and rides very smooth.I would only wish that Mazda could get maybe 275-290 hp in it,,,the this car would be a dream come through
OTTODDROCK 9 months ago
@OTTODDROCK I could tune it to be range of power, without an expensive turbo or supercharger. You might even get a couple miles per gallon more out of it. Or...just get a turbo for it and go for more HP!

Rx-8 Pros: Rear body Styling. Cons: Very Poor Fuel economy for the HP you get, the body has too many round shapes it doesnt look sharp and sporty much and burning oil, which I just learnt.

Lifeblood086 10 months ago
how is the RX8 just a hardtop with MX-5? the two cars are miles apart! The RX8 has a rotary engine, is far longer, gets much worse gas mileage and is just bigger in general. it also doesn't handle quite as well as the Miata
germankid93 10 months ago
rx-8 can take more beating than the genesis coupe and g37 because of the less moving parts so like going up 7000 rpms won't do anything
AllanXRLTS3 10 months ago
@AllanXRLTS3 I'm fairly certain an object spinning against a chamber 7000 times per minute will not be devoid of any wear and tear; moving parts or otherwise.

xDorkFsho 11 months ago
Was the RX-8 modded in any way aside from being lowered? I know most RX-8s don't come with rear spoilers as standard.
Also, people complain about the lack of low end torque on the rotary, but I disagree. Sure, there isn't much, but it's usable if you don't shift like an idiot, which you shouldn't on a track. I think people are complaining about the torque difference after upshifting from 9000RPM, because that's where you feel the torque disappearing. Drive it like a man and keep the revs high.
XSquareStickIt 11 months ago
to the guy in red with the long hair - dude the interior and exterior designs set it apart from the "usual" coupe on the road. you're the first and ONLY person I heard not liking the RX8.

Let me know what you guys think Oh BTW im thinking of a 04 model
gman4eva9 1 year ago
I drive and autocross my Rx8 and I love it. The only thing I do not like is that it only does 16 mpg. Appart from that thought the car is amazing and at the autocross track it puts a lot of cars to shame.
Wrightcomputing 1 year ago
something I would like to add is the rx8 was not meant to replace the rx7 name or surpass it. Think of it as corvettes and camaros. Same idea; big engine, rwd muscle cars but one is meant to be easier to live with. I don't think anyone at mazda would say that was the intentions of the rx8
ChaseSpeer 1 year ago
Rotary's are made to be driven like someone stole them. Redline a day keeps a rebuild away. And with a rotary, how could someone resist redlining it ALL the time?? Rotary's are addicting as can be. VERY fun and can take punishment like one wouldn't believe.
Deetroiter 1 year ago
Would you ever recommend an RX8 for a 16yr old? I'd love a sportier car, the RX8 seems to be the only affordable RWD under 10k. Even if it's cheaper I'll probably spend the money I save on gas -.-, do you guys feel the car is reliable enough? especially the early model's? They say rotaries are unreliable, but I talked to a Rx7 owning buddy he said there perfectly ok If maintained religiously. He compared the to '' a Fine woman''
Heco94 1 year ago
@Heco94 all of the rumours of them being unreliable, are from people who did not properly maintain them. Rotaries need to be driven reguarly, knowledge about the flooding, it burns oil regularly, etc. Not redlining the car at 9000RPM ever, also can cause major damage to the rotaries.
FinalBossWTMN 1 year ago
@Heco94 Make sure you keep oil in it. Get it serviced when scheledued, after longer drives open the hood and leave it cracked, redline it often (believe me im not trying to get you tickets), make sure there is enough oil in it. Look up rx8s on the forums and im sure they have owner advice

Sorry but even though you said decent thing about the RX8, I disagree with you testing and critiquing a modified and outdated model. I feel it probably doesn't give you the right to define the RX8 as a car, but only a modified RX8.

If you actually had to drive this car every day, would the lack of power bore you after a while? would you prefer this over a 300zx?
bigbuggaman 1 year ago
@bigbuggaman - Todd would probably prefer the 300zx since he has owned one and loved it. Paul would find it more of a toss-up between the two.
If you can, we recommend driving both of them in the same day... both the 300zx and RX8 are very unique and one of them is bound to feel like a clear winner for you. RX8 will definitely feel smaller than the Z.
EverydayDriver 1 year ago 2
@bigbuggaman

Is the rotary engine a reliable engine?
Marcoshary 1 year ago
@Marcoshary They're known to not be that reliable, unless you know what you're doing and you take care of it. I know that's how the RX7 was.
29ryan49 1 year ago
@29ryan49 The engines are plenty reliable, it's the owners that aren't reliable. If you don't know what you're doing, or you don't keep up the maintenence on it...you will kill it. That's how they got a bad name in the first place. It's a shame because they are amazingly good engines, they catch a lot of flack for no good reason.
