Islamic law recognised women's rights and status since its founding, ergo around 600 AD. Western culture only started giving women their rights in the 19th century. What we have now in the 21st century is very very very new laws conferring status to women in an age when a police report can be made via handphone. A difference between Islamic law and our modern concept of law is enforcement. The belief of their God, the afterlife and disrepute within their own community is the enforcement... in other words the police is their own morality and conscience. All these happened before the rise of the nation state - a consolidation of administrative and executive power.
Maybe there are more pressing issues for developed countries than wife-bashing and womens' rights in a foreign nation... like environmental protection, like stopping silly wars and genocide and poverty and famine. And there are also urgent matters like pandemics that lurk on the horizon, eg bird flu. If developed countries take an interest in womens' rights in Islam, it would only to bash Islamic law.
If women's rights were to be changed (I purposely avoided the word "improved") in the Islamic community, they must be voiced by Muslim women themselves, just as how American women led their own feminist movement in the 19th century. Foreign intervention would only led to unsatisfactory results because they would not understand the COMMUNITY in which these women live in. Women's rights are more than just rights a woman have; it touches on family, inheritance, property and much more.

We should compare the situation of muslim women in both environments (western and arab) to see what is causing the difference (if there is one). Here is sahih muslim Book 015, Number 4079: He who beats a slave WITHOUT COGNIZABLE OFFENCE of his or slaps him (WITHOUT ANY SERIOUS FAULT), then expiation for it is that he should set him free. Very different than what you quoted. I quoted a SAHIH.

For freedom4exp.-the punishment for slaves is LESS than that of free men. A hadith from Sahih Bukhari (narrated Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah) says: "If anyone slanders his slave & he is free of that then he will be whipped on the day of resurrection unless facts are as he had said." Also, (Narrated Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Umar): The prophet (pbuh) said, "Forgive your slave seventy times a day." And there are many more, yet obviously you will only twist & contort hadiths that fit your agenda.

Sunan Abu-Dawud, 11:2073 "Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Prophet (pbuh) said: 'If any slave marries without the permission of his masters, he is a fornicator.'"
The slaves marriage will be invalid and he must be whipped because he has committed adultery. He must be separated from his wife.
SLAVERY IS BARBARIC. You deceive when you say that "technically slavery is allowed in islam. However the slaves are to be treated like family & to be protected".

Even if a free woman marries without permission from her master (guardian or mahram) then SHE is a fornicator & is to be whipped-as is a man who merely lies about a woman's chastity. BUT THE WHIPPNG OF THE SLAVE AS I SAID EARLIER, IS LESS THAN THAT FOR A FREE MAN/WOMAN! The slave can very well ask for freedom, then get married. You look for statements that deal wit punishment, which is required for order & control in the rare circumstances that it's necessary & then portray that as Islam.

Freeing slaves can erase sins! (58:3, 4:92, 24:33). Quran 90:13-freeing slaves is the path to heaven.
There are many verses that describe the slaves in the Quran in the most beautiful and magnanimous of ways, yet you love to go through hadiths and look for those with negative connotations, when in reality we need laws and boundaries.The prophet said, forgiving your slave 70 times a day is best. You can't even call your slave "slave/servant"! He can't call you "master"! What beauty, what wisdom!

Read 24:33-when slave girls are given into prostitution (as happened a lot in pagan arabia) there is no blame on them. Any sincere seeker of truth can also check out the "answering-christianity" site &their section on slavery to see how islam came to free slaves and give them equality. Also, see how the bible calls for a harsh & unfair system of slavery at this site.

Regarding other whippings of slaves being half of freeman: this is very convenient from a practical sense. The more brutal the beatings, the more time the slave will need to recover and the less service the master will receive. To solve that, a lesser beating will surely be a smart compromise between inflicting a lesson and returning the slaves to their workload. Cunning!!

the slavery ur thinking of is what america did to africans for God knows how long. In islam, slaves, women, men & children are to beat for certain crimes. The punishment for slaves however, is less than for the others-im sure you know this seeing as to how you go through the hadiths on the topic, yet you dont mention this, all you say is "Ah-hah! Regarding the slave punishment in that case: isn't the pain of being separated from your chosen wife brutal enough?! For the muslim slave owner "NO". The slave must also undergo 50 lashes. For certain crimes there is a punishment, 4 EVERYBODY (4 slaves the punishment is LESS you dunce,destroying your arguement) yet its not to inflict pain, as the prophet sed the beating must leave NO marks whatsoever. If the slave wants freedom they get it, & their master must help them get back on their feet when they are free. You contort islam, and I pity your soul when it meets Allah on the day of judgement.

How is the punishment of a slave less, when his wife is taken away from him (severe punishment) and on top of that he gets 50 lashes (more punishment)?! That is the proof that slave life was not what you said "slaves are to be treated like family & to be protected" and in this case the punishment was severe. the beating is for reprimading & teaching, & isn't about inflicting pain, and is not to be done in public or to humiliate the slave infront of others. You can't hit him/her in the face or any sensitive parts. It's not about pain. The sahaba were fearful of even raising a hand on their slaves. One sahaba accidentally hit his slave and begged his slave to hit him back in return. This is all according to the sahih hadiths.

Islamic law recognised women's rights and status since its founding, ergo around 600 AD. Western culture only started giving women their rights in the 19th century. What we have now in the 21st century is very very very new laws conferring status to women in an age when a police report can be made via handphone. What we are examining here however is a law has protected Muslim women since 600AD...

A difference between Islamic law and our modern concept of law is enforcement. The belief of their God, the afterlife and disrepute within their own community is the enforcement... in other words the police is their own morality and conscience. All these happened before the rise of the nation state - a consolidation of administrative and executive power.

Maybe there are more pressing issues for developed countries than wife-bashing and womens' rights in a foreign nation... like environmental protection, like stopping silly wars and genocide and poverty and famine. And there are also urgent matters like pandemics that lurk on the horizon, eg bird flu. If developed countries take an interest in womens' rights in Islam, it would only to bash Islamic law.

If women's rights were to be changed (I purposely avoided the word "improved") in the Islamic community, they must be voiced by Muslim women themselves, just as how American women led their own feminist movement in the 19th century. Foreign intervention would only led to unsatisfactory results because they would not understand the COMMUNITY in which these women live in. Women's rights are more than just rights a woman have; it touches on family, inheritance, property and much more.

The Amistad and the Islamic sense, how theyre meant to be treated...try answering-christianity website. Will put the definition of slavery in question...please also distinguish between what Islam teaches re:slavery as opposed to how humans apply there own ideas to Islamic teachings.

Domestic violence is a problem in many western countries, quite often comes from too many non-muslims, getting drunk and beating up on their wives....they just didnt know their limits.LOL Oh, yes alot of rapes as well... but they're out in few years and can go to confession. : )

Yes there is rape all over the world. Even women beating their husbands. The difference is that in Islamic countries this is allowed and not punished. You now that there is rape/abuse/violence in the other countries bc women have a way to denounce it. That´s not the case in Islamic countries. So of course if noone denonces, it doens´t exists!

Statistic don't count if women cnat protest. If I take as true your claim that there are few beatings of muslim women in western countries, that could be also related to the legal system of the country, as well to Islam. We should compare the situation of muslim women in both environments (western and arab) to see what is causing the difference (if there is one). But as long as women are not free to denounce in arab countries the comparison should have to wait and suspisious will continue.

You missed the point. My point is the age to which a woman may be married and the marriage consummated is arbitrary - differing from society to society. So tell me, what are your views on polygamy then? Just because some countries denounce it does it mean that it is evil and bad? Women rights in Islam should be championed but not via changing texts here and there. Just like how improving tax law in your country is more than just changing numbers, there's something more fundamental.

When looking into laws and rules, also look at why is it justified, what explanation can be given for such retribution/punishment/sentence...whether it be in English Law or Sharia Law. What is a deterent? What is ultimate deterent? Look at human relationships from an emperical view and then you will understand.
