Tarja's voice isn't what it used to be; let me explain. If you listen to any earlier performance of this song, take summer breeze 2002 for example, you'll hear her deep touching voice with constant vibrato all throughout the note, a quality of opera singers. Lately, Tarja's voice has a more pop-ish and less operatic tone to it. It's not deep any more, it's lighter and head-voice-ish, and the vibrato isn't constant, just heard at the end of the note. Her old sound made her unique.

Now in 2011 compared with 2008 she changed from a mezzo with operatic style to a world class soprano which can't even be categorised properly. Above all she kept her way of making the audience feel every word.
THIS new sound i think makes her even more special and has become her signature.
Anyway - if you want full vibrato and operatic performances, you can watch her classical concerts or her new neoclassical band Harus.

You can see the 'quality of opera singer" now she plays opera professionally. Check the performances in Plovdiv for Rusalka, Carmen and you will see what I mean.
She has a different style of singing in rock concerts and another for singing unplugged acoustical sets.
And the "old" style is not gone, she uses it sometimes for eg "End of all hope" is sang identically as the original.

No, Tarja doesn't play Nightwish songs because she doesn't have enough good own songs. She does it for the fans to bring back some memories. She was a member of Nightwish for 9 years, why should she deny it? She has the right to play this old stuff. But Tarja doesn't need to do that at all, her solo albums are just awesome. She doesn't try to copy Nightwish, she has found her own style and it's great. And how are you to say she can't be happy?You don't know her at all.

I really wish Tarja would sing this song like she originally did back in 99 and not the 05 way. The original version was the best and her voice was strong.
Her voice sounds more 'powerful' and 'operatic' because it uses full vibrato as in opera.
Also, the 1998 version is sang in mezzo-soprano registre, while the 1995 version is full lyric.
I prefer the newer version: better technique, higher registre, more feeling.. but it's good that we have 2 epic versions so that everyone may satisfy its taste :)
@irenikus777 1995 version?? I've never heard of a 95 version? Nightwish didn't write the song until 1999. So there's a 1999 verison and the newer 2005 version. Only two. I personally like the old version, cause it sounds more classical like and fits the song better. The new version doesn't sound as strong to me :)
The 2005 version reflects Tarja's new style. It's more feminine and lyrical, closer to the lied and chamber music in general.
My point is that the lower register and looser vibrato used when she sang in mezzo gives the impression of strength - but only when the orchestra is scarce.
The reality is that this new 'delicate' style is times more powerful, you can notice it well in songs like Crimson Deep or Ciaran's Well (pretty wicked imho).
@irenikus777 I do like this style that she sings now too. Just for some reason, I don't like it when she used it for sleeping sun. Just doesn't seem to fit that song. But, songs like, Tired of being alone and her new songs today, her voice sounds great with them. I know she can still sing in her deep, mezzo-soprano today. If she chose to. She does sometimes, like for christmas concerts.

Imho nowadays she is greater than ever.
She indeed sang in her youth with full vibrato because old NW songs demanded it.
In time she acquired new skills and techniques, and blends them at will. It's an evolution towards her way of feeling a song.
Also, her voice is MUCH deeper now, what you are missing is the "dark" mezzo-soprano timbre from those days.
Btw I think she is the only singer alive that managed to actually use several voice timbres.

No, Tarja doesn't play Nightwish songs because she doesn't have enough good own songs. She does it for the fans to bring back some memories. She was a member of Nightwish for 9 years, why should she deny it? She has the right to play this old stuff. But Tarja doesn't need to do that at all, her solo albums are just awesome. She doesn't try to copy Nightwish, she has found her own style and it's great. And how are you to say she can't be happy?You don't know her at all.

@karlottokurt Agreed. Furthermore, Anette does not have the voice for many of the old Nightwish songs, she is much to gentle for the work - which makes perfect sense since they build their music around her voice back then.

NEARLY EVERY musician that was in a band plays that band's songs when he/she leaves and i don't see a SINGLE FUCKING REASON he/she should not. on the opposite i see many reasons one should do it. first example that comes into my mind is another metal woman, doro: saw her 4 times and every time half of her setlist was from warlock. now that makes her a bitch? come on.

The range is wider in the newer version.
Her voice sounds more 'powerful' and 'operatic' because it uses full vibrato as in opera.
Also, the 1998 version is sang in mezzo-soprano registre, while the 1995 version is full lyric.
I prefer the newer version: better technique, higher registre, more feeling.. but it's good that we have 2 epic versions so that everyone may satisfy its taste :)

@irenikus777 1995 version?? I've never heard of a 95 version? Nightwish didn't write the song until 1999. So there's a 1999 verison and the newer 2005 version. Only two. I personally like the old version, cause it sounds more classical like and fits the song better. The new version doesn't sound as strong to me :)

The 2005 version reflects Tarja's new style. It's more feminine and lyrical, closer to the lied and chamber music in general.
My point is that the lower register and looser vibrato used when she sang in mezzo gives the impression of strength - but only when the orchestra is scarce.
The reality is that this new 'delicate' style is times more powerful, you can notice it well in songs like Crimson Deep or Ciaran's Well (pretty wicked imho).

@irenikus777 I do like this style that she sings now too. Just for some reason, I don't like it when she used it for sleeping sun. Just doesn't seem to fit that song. But, songs like, Tired of being alone and her new songs today, her voice sounds great with them. I know she can still sing in her deep, mezzo-soprano today. If she chose to. She does sometimes, like for christmas concerts.

That's why i said before: it's nice that we have 2 great, yet different versions of this epic song :)
Thing is, Tarja keeps evolving her style constantly - sometimes in unexpected directions.
But i fully trust her musical sense, afterall it's the same sense that brought (to me at least) so much quality in the past.
