@DWJ202 I think you bought the wrong kindle. The Kindle Fire is for users to have more of a tablet feel while still being able to read books. Just get one of those black ink Kindles if you want to just read! The kindle fire in my opinion has way better battery life than most expected anyways..
I just think Kindle Fire should have better battery life like the Ink Kindles have. I do like the Kindle Fire but it does not compare to the Older Kindle devices that battery last a month without recharging. I have to be hooked up to a power cord in order to read a book using Kindle Fire. I'm sending the Fire back for a refund and getting the Kindle 3 g model for traveling. Kindle Fire was over Hyped in my opinion.
Don't you miss having the page numbers. The Kindle Fire feels like a led weight in your hands after an hour of reading. Test To Speech software is a great software for kids. Amazon purchased Audible.com and they built the Kindle Fire around that for profit. We are sending our Kindle Fire back and getting the previous model with Text To Speech and better battery usage.
I got my kindle Fire for Christmas and was disappointed. The Battery keeps going dead and it's heavy, the power button is on the bottom of the device and you keep turning it off while reading books. No Test To Speech for people that want it. Amazon should have marketed this device as a DVD Music Player not a true Kindle Device.
@DWJ202 It's my first Kindle or tablet or whatever, and I have to disagree with you. I loved it to be honest, but I've been told I have pretty bad taste. The only REAL complaint I have is that it takes a while to turn on, I thought my zune was slow, that thing is ridiculous. Still, it was definitely worth its money. Not an ipad, but for someone who can hardly afford the 200$, the thing is phenomenal.
@DWJ202 There shouldn't be high expectations for battery life. Even the best tablet money can buy only goes on to about 10 hours. It's called overreacting, learn to control it.
Great video! The best "comparison" on youtube between these two awesome machines.
I was thinking about buying a Kindle Fire to use at the university as reader of exercise sheets that professors usually upload to our website (PDF files that we are obligated to examine during classes). Is the size of the screen (only 7"...) a bad deal to this kind of usage?
@gmed2 I did check out Colornote and it looks like a good app. Not quite what I could do with iBrainstorm, though, which enabled me to have numerous postit-like notes on the screen and I could resize and move them around to make patterns of content for a presentation or podcast. I hope I'll see it for the Fire some day!
Great review. I'm going to purchase the KF when I return to the U.S. in January. I wonder if I will have to use a VPN to view the videos on the Fire since I'm living in Ecuador.
Wow, great detailed talk on this subject. I have the Kindle Keyboard, which I agree, nothing will replace e-ink! I am waiting on my Kindle Fire, it was shipped last night! yay :) But this is exactly how I feel. Kindle Keyboard, Fire and a laptop! I bought a NookColor and now regret it, it just doesn't compare to Amazon Kindle! It will soon be on ebay........lol
@samalawolf I will pass this along to my wife, Darlene, and make a note to get back to you if she finds any. It might help if you can email me at PodChronicles AT gmail dot com, so I can forward your question to her directly.
Two quick things, it seems to be Amazon's assertion that as more people use the Silk browser it will 'learn' and get faster, so hopefully that will help with the 'sluggishness' that so many are reporting for now. And, at one point you mention that the iPad will go to someone to read quilt books. I have been looking high & low for digital quilt books (and magazines as well). That is actually one of my main reasons for getting the Fire. I haven't really seen any one either the nook or kindle.
Thank you for you take on the Fire. I know that you loved your Ipad and to hear that you are really enjoying the Fire lends great credibility to your view. I have purchased one for my husband and feel he will really like this. I think the price tag has made this such a great item. Even if there are things that an Ipad may do better, the price makes up for it in many ways. Again thank you for your review.
really nice commentary on the new fire. new subscriber here as well! i'm curious if you find the lack of a home button an issue with the fire vs. the ipad?
@rionj I actually do miss the physical home button, but I'm gradually learning the whereabouts of the virtual home button at the lower left of the screen. In the Conde Nast apps, you have to remember to hit the home icon at top left of the screen; otherwise the Fire's home button is not accessible, the way it would be if it were a physical button.
Wonderful review. My attraction to the Fire is the size. The iPad is too big and heavy to hold with one hand. My hesitation is the sluggishness of the silk browser because I use the browser more than anything else on these devices. I really wish that Apple would make either a 7 inch tablet or a 5 inch iPhone.
@CountryComesToTown I agree that size is the big factor, along with price. If Apple comes out with a 7-inch tablet priced at $199 or thereabouts, this will be a whole new ball game. At this point, the Fire benefits from having created an all-new category and being the only one in it.
Great review! Very objective... I appreciate that. A really good, honest, non-biased review of the Kindle Fire. I'll be getting my Fire either today or tomorrow depending on UPS... most likely tomorrow. I have a 3rd generation Kindle 3G/WiFi and I absolutely love it. Can't wait to get my Fire! I'm glad you didn't directly compare it to the iPad.
Fantastic review of the Kindle Fire. I look forward to hearing your thoughts as you continue to use it over time. Will it really replace your iPad in the long run? I'm glad you're keeping your Kindle e-ink device for serious reading. I enjoy your podcast with all of the helpful tips!
Cool! You started watching Lost!
