One of the greatest individuals to ever grace Hollywood. A total talent. The world suffered a great loss when Ms. Lombard died in that crash. Perhaps the finest comedic actress of her day... Her ability to be rough and tumble blended perfectly with her husband, The King, Clark Gable. After her death, Gable was never the same.
What was she like? I know she was generould to Clark... bought him a nice roadster when he was starring in Gone with the Wind. Perhaps to keep him thinking of her and not his costars... But what else?
I just read a book about Joan Crawford who was a very dear friend of Carol's that Carol and her mom were crossing the states selling war bonds. Someone sent her a telegraph warning Carol that Lana Turner (who was making a film with Clark at the time) was after her husband. So in the next town Carol and her Mother caught the next flight to LA. And they both died in the plane crash. Joan never forgave Lana Turner for what she did to her dear friend.
@StaunchComic I believe it's the reason Clark never recovered from losing Carole especially after Fieldsie gave Clark the last final letter Carole wrote to him after the crash...
@StaunchComic The contents were never revealed only that after Clark read it he finally broke, because he continued to carry a strong image after the crash and he never was the same again. He was only 59 when he died.
@tskimmi Carol and her mother, agent were supposed to give up their seats at LAs Vegas for military officials.. she presuaded them to let her go on. She must have been in a hurry. I love Carol but she was insensitive to the fears of flying her mother and agent had. Too bad the pilot made a mistake too..
70 years ago today the tragic events took place that robbed the world of a great actress and a great comedy actress too. RIP Carole Lombard.
