We use the whiskey barrel approach also. We have also had luck planting it in a 5 gallon landscape bucket and burying it in the ground with about 2 inches exposed at the top. With such a big bucket, the roots don't seem to be able to get down that far.
i got a few stalks and in 2 years it was thick about 1 by 5 meters, their like weeds, so i bag it up and sell it, mmm, i love dealing herbs (not pot of course) :-)
