LOL! I'm laughing. Is that just a note on the video game!?! They put that there to see if people would do something to see what it means and it turns out to be just some credits! XD OMG I love you creators of Portal.
Budget if less than $100, either they are that smart or they have the Chineese doing programming as well an manufacturing the aperature equipment ( no racism intended)
Basically, its a PowerPoint slide pitching the ARG (probably the same one the person who came up with it pitched to the heads of Valve as a means of promoting the second game).
I don't get why the picture is so garbled, I did it and mine turned out just fine (straight, clear, no sync issues and with only a small amount of corruption, but not much more than most Portal 1 SSTV images). Maybe it's because I turned off the music completely and recorded directly off of the headphone jack.
@DeloreandudeTommy I think that's exactly why. All those other sounds interfered with the signal, and it probably wasn't transmitted well in the uploader's case. A headphone jack is a good idea.
"*garbled text* to hande calls, custom PHP script looping through
plot fragments and home-made ANSI-art conversions of
Portal 2 artwork"
What I'm reading the "garbled text" part as looks like ngetty, which is indeed a real program that "starts login sessions on virtual console terminals, on demand" (taken from the ngetty website)
Other than that and your "handle" typo, I don't really have much to comment on except that my ears feel really bad now
wow. I wouldn't have the time, resources, or patience to decode something like this. my hat is off to you. The amount of detail put into all of this is stunning.
@ViNFaMoUsZz Its not a question of loudness its more about the purity of the sound itself. Every dropped kilobypesecond is a dropped area of the RGB code in the picture. Background noise makes it even worse. So yr best bet is to record it in a VERY silent room with no chances of echo (under a blanket?) and with the best quality u can get the sound with.
On slide 3, where it says "*garbled text* to handle calls" the garbled text is "mgetty" a linux program that allows terminals (ttys) over a modem. Google "man mgetty" without quotes.
First garbled word looks like *getty (possibly agetty), which opens a tty in Unix systems. Makes sense since the line above says "Old PC running Linux."
@harhargorilla This appears to be explaining the steps taken for the creation of the Portal ARG, a sort of meta-game that was implemented into Portal 1 via an update. It's purpose was to drop hints about Portal 2 before the actual game itself was announced, and used SSTV images hidden within radios to reveal images that eventually led to the discovery of the Aperture Laboratories BBS, where an 'image dump' revealed concept art for Portal 2.

@waze3174 still nothing. I used MMSSTV and RX-SSTV but on each one , the image is verry unclear. But thnks annyway for a reply.
a2real2original2name 9 months ago
@a2real2original2name
1.download GcfScape
2. Open "pak01_dir.vpk" from the folder portal2 in the Steam\Steamapps\Username\Portal 2
3. Once you've opened the file, browse to root/sound/commentary/com-arg.wav
4. Open your SSTV decoding program of choice (mine is RX-SSTV) and play com-arg.wav through your music player.
5. Crystal clear images (to some extent) :)
