Illinois got pwned in this game. I was there. It got so bad the fans started getting bored and throwing things on the field, and Saban had to use the referee's microphone to plead for it to stop. It also snowed in New Orleans that night, causing massive traffic pileups.
Walter Young, brandon lloyd, Greg Lewis, Aaron Moorehead were all receivers on that team. We were definitely smaller and slower on defense than LSU though. They were very good.
Illinois had some pro talent on offense that year though. Was it Walter Young and Brandon Lloyd? It was a tremendous job by the coaching staff getting the team to accomplish what they did considering the defense was very suspect. Kinda similar to LSU in that respect but our D was a little more talented but the offense definitely carried us in 2001.

The SEC champs Always play in the sugar bowl unless they're playing in the NC somewhere else. In 2001, wew were SEC champs. In 2003, the sugar bowl was the national championship game and last year, the SEC champps were playing in the national championship somewhere else, so they picked the second best ranked SEC school in the BCS, which happens to be LSU. Just luck.

i remember this was the only close BCS game because the other BCS games were a blow out by at least 20 or more points that year

Indeed, just as the Big 10 champs got stomped by the SEC champs again last year. Big 10 is usually a fraud.
