Would you just read those lyrics! Purely and utterly brilliant. When you read this stuff you realize how pathetic modern songwriting has become. TT are amazing musicians and Hollis is a poet!
Only a few songs did I start out with vinyl, and then had to buy the CD, and then had to put it on iPod. This is one of those songs. It has stayed with me for 25 years... thanks TT.
Nothing wrong with U2 They made some awesome tunage . Silver and Gold Bullet The Blue Sky ... Beautiful Day . I could go on . And I like them songs every bit as much as I like Talk Talk or Curve or Verve or Richard Ashcroft or Icehouse,or Rush or RoxyMusic or Savoy Brown or Creme or StevieRay Vaughn Or I could go on forever here. Talkin' like that is nothing but Hipster...
Everybody has a fav artist and to some of them Talk Talk does not cut the mustard . Big Deal Try listening to Malory
It's a sad fact that band's who effectively tailor to the masses like U2 can get all the fame & riches to be had, when real genius invariably struggles. The world has always been that way. But TT's work will stand the test of aeons, whereas only a very few U2 tracks will likely be remembered.
I came to hear some Talk Talk and everybody's trashing U2?! WTF guys, is there some "beef" between the bands I was unaware of? Can't we all just get along? I happened to love U2 until they lost their damn minds about midway through writing Achtung Baby. They made amazing music once, like The Unforgettable Fire, for instance. It's a great album. And YES I LOVED Joshua tree. Bono may be kind of a douche NOW, but they had a lot of good things to say THEN. They WEREN'T commercial in the beginning.
@TheFeather1979 i think it is highly debatable the extent to which U2 created "The Unforgettable Fire". Without Eno and Lanois it would have been War Pt 2 imo. U2 are extremely simplistic in their approach to songwriting, and whilst clearly capable of churning out stadium friendly "anthems" for fun, their work lacks the sort of introspective intensity most associated with Talk Talk's work from 1986-1991. Yet they earnt billions and Hollis sweet f.a.. Hence the anger on here
This song & Talk Talk's "Life's What You Make It," are just great pieces of music & performance. This band deserved to last far longer. I mix this with Steely Dan, China Crisis, The Blue Nile, some Johnny Hates Jazz & I am calm again. The drama in their melodies is what lifted this music beyond mere synth music. Well thought out & arranged. One of the few 80's bands that doesn't sound dated to me. Lead vocalist also has lots of character in his voice. The finale is thrilling.
This is a piece of art. It totally numbs you, before transporting you into a world of deeply moving soundscapes. This is Mark Hollis' opus and we live in a completely empty place now that he has decided to retire. Mick Karn's "Wishy Washy Wishing" is just about the only song that can co-exists with this.
From conventional synth-pop to experimental minimalism, Talk Talk filled the eighties with some breath-taking music and thought-provoking lyrics. They were always their own men and refused to bow to the music industry manipulators. Perhaps that's why they haven't achieved the superstar status they deserve, but at least we, the fans, can recognize brilliance when we see it!
I'm currently listening to It's My Life (the album) in the car - absolutely stunning album, especially on the car's first-rate stereo system.... then I get home & listen to this song on shitty youtube quality, & it just blows the entire IML album out of the water!! Just in another league altogether - so much more NATURAL, organic, effortless - with no overwhelming synth... Man that really shows just how far their music advanced in just TWO YEARS!
I have most all their albums and they are stunning to say the least. It's a travesty of justice that they aren't recognized for their genius more universally. But hey, when has genius ever been appreciated by the masses? Talk Talk are light years beyond most "rock" bands; that it's really pathetic that I'd even have to state something so glaringly obvious.
Quite possibly one of the greatest song ever , First got this album on vinyl when it came out and must have played it a thousand times since , this track is the best on it and so under rated , I get goose bumps every time i hear it
you enjoy better this song if you listen to it after "chameleon days" as in the LP. Anyway... the Melodica solo is one of the most brilliant, simple, surprising thing ever heard. Not to talk of the end with the flutes
As a Massive Simple Minds fan...i grew up wi the Minds.Pink Floyd and the genius lads that are Talk Talk....fuck U2 tell me one song they have that can touch this depth????? time its time......Genius Mark
"feenoSM" - Bloody oath, the Minds! NGD, one of the very very few albums that approach the genius of TT in my view! I still remember the first time I ever listened to NGD after geting it on cd many years ago, I never thought I'd ever find an album more frigging p-e-r-f-e-c-t.... til I got Colour of Spring...
I saw Talk Talk live at the Dollar and Dimes nightclub back in the 80's performing all these in one word INCREDIBLE come back Mark PLEASE the music world needs you.....

Roughly 10 years ago i was in a small record shop in Canterbury , Kent. I was browsing through the cd's when i came across the Talk Talk selection. After looking at a few of them a gent behind me said" good band them" and after a short conversation i left the shop. when i got home i started to research the band. a few months later i purchased a video of talk Talk, getting to the track Living in another world i relised that the chap i had been chatting to was Mark Hollis. i wish i had known!!
Hahaaha, I've just clicked over from the clip of U2's "One Tree Hill" on youtube - reading the comments on there really made me laugh: people talking about how the song "makes them cry" & how it’s so "timeless" & "life changing", & how Joshua Tree was "the best album in history" & it's "the work of GENIUS". Yes actual comments on the video for that song! One person even said, to quote: "This is probably the most intense Song ever made."
@chapaev36 Most certainly not true. Both U2 and Talk Talk are amazing bands. You can't call them junk, because they're not. Just because one is better than the other, doesn't mean the other should be declined. Just enjoy the music.
You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. We can present the genius of Talk Talk to the (m)asses, but if they refuse it, then what else is one to do?
My goodness, what would happen if one of Gaga's fan's stumbled onto a TT classic? I do wonder if they would even be able to fathom the depths, the genius, or the raw emotion that Hollis & crew evoke on each and every song?
Kite by U-2 i could abide by those comments but.....
as stated when this song first appeared on You tube many years ago by colour of spring.. this song. i knew its relevance the first time i heard it all those years ago.
story of my life, story of many folks lives... Rest your head..
this is my swan song, as it is many other talk talk fans, the endearing eulogy.
for me this song is sacred.. mine! given to me by the grace of God, incarnated in the vocal cords of Mark Hollis.
Awww c'mon, cut those guys some slack. Joshua Tree has some beautiful & intense moments (disregarding the awful singles). U2 may be pompous but they're not all bad. That said, Talk Talk (and especially Colour Of Spring, my favourite album of all time) are unrivalled and unparalleled. A singer, drummer and guitarist myself, I could never hope to accomplish something like this. The warmth, the grandeur, the class...you can't do anyone justice once you start comparing them to Talk Talk.
"AndrewAnthonyHyde" - Right, guess I need to set the record straight: I don't hate U2 (anything post-zooropa I fucking do hate), it's just that everyone goes to U2 as this beacon of integrity, like they were the only band making quality tunes back then, which is sooo far from the truth it's not funny! They were the only good band to get credit because their tunes were radio-friendly & heavily promoted...
"AndrewAnthonyHyde" - And I love how your typical U2 fan (led to U2 by the media) thinks they understand PROPER music. They've no desire to seek out anything else that may be out there, lazy fucks. They have U2 & that's all they need, the media told them so. (I don't mean you, I mean the people on that video)
"AndrewAnthonyHyde" - Finally, your typical U2 fan (who's bought every album religiously - even the super-shit new ones) would almost certainly listen to Laughing Stock & dismiss it instantly with statements like: "What is this SHIT? Why's this song so LOOOOONG? Where's the SCREAMING vocal?? And there's no guitar RIFF maaaaaan!!! Screw this, U2 rules!!!"
And finally, MH is a true proper genius, whereas bono is a true proper TWAT.
I couldn't agree more with all you said. Anything by U2 up to and including Zooropa (I always think I'm one of the few who actually like that album) was fine (OK, Rattle & Hum was a stinker), and while they were certainly pioneers in bringing certain guitar techniques (adapted FROM bands like The Associates) into radio-friendly music, they just weren't THE beacons of musical integrity ... in the end, they were "just a band", no better or worse than Duran Duran, just morr pretentious.
An afterthought: Maybe a U2 fan might think that Joshua Tree's "Exit" was some kind of blueprint for Talk Talk's "Desire" (another song that still baffles and fascinates me after 22 years).
(Bono would never dare make a lyrical sketch like Mark Hollis in that (or any other) Talk Talk song. Too loose, not pompous enough ...)
@JohnoEAL you are pathetic. obviously born yesterday and not able to appreciate it when music was real. singers could sing. and were as successful as these guys and rightfully so.
Oh, and if I have to listen to BOZO pontificate about the worlds problems, I think I'll puke. Hollis is a real genius and BOZO is just an over opinionated, self indulged "rock star". Big difference between Hollis and what's his name again?
Man these guys are just beyond comparison. Listen to the details: Paul's restrained bass is absolutely sublime, but Lee's drumming is the definition of breathtaking! On all their songs, his drumming are the bass, he's just unsurpassed, a drumming god... (& the bloke singing is the god of everything else)
What a songwriter. This dude is deep, very talented. I think he went slap off the deep end with their later stuff. It didn't sound good to me, just strange.
Hey everyone just wanted to say that it's amazing to find so many people that feel as strongly as I do about this song, album (yeah I said album) and this band. This song was always kind of mine if you know what I mean. WAY too underrated of a band. Timeless. Cheers from New Orleans!
man this band just blew me away. as a kid i remember just buying each new LP (!) and being totally stunned. the 21st century owe this band alot! have you got the Mark Hollis solo album?
Talk Talk became less comercial with each passing release. Mark Hollis has such a great voice but he's almost always unitelligable. This album is by far my favorite. They became so experimental after this that they really commited comercial suicide. Great memories from this one
Iwas the only kid at my school that appreciated T T's brilliance and ability to layer tracks with diverse samples Still love this, they used to take me away from the pain - of my school and home - which was a special place for me ANYWHERE but there
Amazing song ....one of their underrated ones in my humble opinion...what an amazing album though....timeless classic we shall all be listening to this in 50 years time :)
So far, I knew them only for a few 80's hits and thought they disapperared like lots of 'meteors' of those years, one-shot and game over..how I was wrong! Through true fans that posted songs of the following albums I am discovering a brand new music world..a band too ahead, playing so innovative and particular a sound.
Many thanks to every talk talk fan that opened up my eyeas..and ears.
this brings back very nice memories of 89 and 90 and 91 ... I was in college and I used to listen this from tape in my car ... I used to keep my fav album for Fridays .... things seemed so simple then .... I loved Talk Talk so much ...
This is my alltime favorit band and Mark Hollis has such a spiritual voice that touches u very deeply. 'Such a shame' the band doesn't excist anymore. Talk Talk, the most fabulous and underestimated band of the 20th century.
Hollis for the win!!

Why's this song so LOOOOONG? Where's the SCREAMING vocal?? And there's no guitar RIFF maaaaaan!!! Screw this, U2 rules!!!"
And finally, MH is a true proper genius, whereas bono is a true proper TWAT.

@JohnoEAL

@JohnoEAL

One of the most interesting bands in pop/rock evolution! Mark always so deep into his work, check out Talk Talk Live at Monteaux DVD. Awesome live!

Well said! Great to be among true music lovers. Had the tape too! This is, no doubt, a classic album. Be well.

This is my alltime favorit band and Mark Hollis has such a spiritual voice that touches u very deeply. 'Such a shame' the band doesn't excist anymore. Talk Talk, the most fabulous and underestimated band of the 20th century.
