  • i have an ignition coil powered tesla coil showing the output driven from an ignition coil and dimer switch watch?v=9cwVXfBCFpY just to show you know its still in the tuning phase

  • oh yeah by the way what kind of capacitors are you using

  • Your 350nF seems very high . I would have thought, to get the primary circuit in resonance you would need less than 10nF.

Saltwater caps work Ok but the bank of caps I used were some off e-bay , from China. I think they were 20KV each and about 67nF, ceramic and blue in colour

If you want long sparks from your ignition coil look at my other YT video High Voltage Sparks from ignition coil

The Oudin coil is easy to make also; I will put a more instructional video on this soon

  • i have an ignition coil powered one not on youtube yet that only gets 2 inch discharges with a topload think diodes would help me well mabe a better capacitor to i only have a350 nf 20kv pulse capacitor from a electric fence charger

  • 2 inch sparks is good for an ignition powered coil

The problem is it is difficult to get the current up and because the "source" is high voltage in the first place it is difficult to get capacitors that will take the initial high voltage.

Diodes ater the Ignition coil can help

  • What HV diodes are you using? Are you getting a ton of diode rectifiers and hooking like 50 1000V ones together? You can get 100 for only 3 dollars. I'm also doing ignition coils and wish to make DC :(

  • I bought HV diodes from e-bay - China or HK

you need to have at least 40KV rating

    ( 2 X 20Kv each leg)

  • Good work, have you tried wireless with it?

    5stars

  • No I have not tried - Ipresume you mean wireless transmission - I would not know how

    Any link would be appreciated

    Thanks

  • Nice looking output from a tiny coil! What type of ignition coil are you using and how much current is it drawing from your 12V supply?

  • The ignition coil is a salvaged BMW ( fat can type) one Mk 2 . I measured the Amps from the 12 volt battery at 6A.

With very inexpensive HV diodes from RMCybernetics the position of the SG and Capacitors reversed (Cap parallel SG series) the HV can be made DC and better sparks are acheived . Thanks very much for your site , without it I would not have learned as much as I have and eventually made a big(ger) Tesla

  • would a sstc run on just 12v in the primary on a resonant square wave? im talking about a tesla coil not a fly back or ignition commonly associated with the tc . thanks for any reply.

  • 12V ONLY transformed by a tesla coil would only get about 2-4KV

12v would not allow the spark gap to fire

Ignition coils and Flybacks are usd to over come the above points VIZ. to increase the supply voltage to KV initially

  • Yea it works, you'd get better results with higher input voltage but you can do it. I pretty sure there are a few videos up of people doing this.

  • I got a bigger one now but the Caps blew Videos as soon new, uprated caps installed
