I think the reason a lot of people hate the US version (This is my reason anyway), is because it doesn't feel like it's taken seriously at all, the Japanese chefs cook like it's an art form, they are very serious and disciplined, the US ones don't "suck" but they are far less rigid and the Iron Chef show it supposed to be about that, two serious and disciplined chefs who have dedicated their life to their work battle it out.

I saw this for the first time in June 2001, one of the first 'Iron Chef' episodes I ever saw. I just loved everything about it...especially Chairman Kaga's entrance and when he says in plain English: 'If memory serves me right, THIS IS NEW YORK CITY!!!!!!'
