What's the rule with eye contact when walking a long and someone else is walking towards you, or sitting in a circle in class? I struggle with this because I never know where to look. I feel if I look at someone they'l think I'm staring or I'll have a strange look on my face and they'll think I'm weird or think I am being rude gah, I don't know.

In East & Southeast Asia, the natives avoid eye contact all the time just because it's considered polite and non-confrontational.

Every other being on planet reacts just as we do: immediate threat mode! Actually, when people are lying, they will often develop higher levels of eye contact if the lie is pre-meditated. Eye contact avoidance is associated with a lack of confidence. If this is connected to lying, it is usually in the case of an 'off the cuff' lie, or if the person lacks confidence in what they are saying; which I suppose is often a lie.

I tend to avoid eye contact, but I will tell you that the people who are liars will look you straight in the eye when they do it. Telling people that when someone avoids eye contact with you they are lying is bullshit.

People always are big mouths like a female psychologist who told us in a course for jobless people that it is not friendly not to look in someones eyes.

In Japan, it is considered that people does prolonged eye contact is rude unless they are in close relationship.There are sevral reasons to avoid long eye contact by their custom.Recently it is more westernized and for example, professional broardcasters and actors definetly does prolonged eye contact but I can't say the western manner is taken root for most of ordinary Japanese people.
