Ha, I'm about to purchase the exact same setup, came to youtubes for more info... your video was like the third one in my search. I'm going to go ahead and call you a reliable resource of info... Take it easy Rance!
Hello, Just thinking in doing the same upgrade. I have a Mid 2010 MBP. My idea was take out the DVD drive, and use a caddy. My problem is that I read somewhere that the OCZ was thicker than the Crucial. Do you think this could be an issue? Tnks!
Maybe I need a fresh install, but with a Corei5 MB Pro / 8GB RAM / 240GB Agility 3, I get under 4h and in general, at least 20-25% worst battery life.
@xDRAN0x The 240GB takes more juice. And the Agility 3 is a 'performance' Drive. Also, the stock hitachi drives are really low power consumption, but thats why they are also low performance.
@TheShowMen look at the specification of power consumption on any drive you buy. "Performance" SSDs actually consume more power than the stock Hitachi platter drive. There are lots of low power consumption SSDs out there, however. Just have to take a look at the voltage.
Just bought one today having no idea if it would work. Went on a hunch. I'll do the memory upgrade to I think. In couple of days I'll test it all out.
Im thinking of buying one of these ssd's for my mbp mid 2009, just wondering if you have done any read/write tests as Iwould like to kno if it runs at max SATA II speeds?
@charalambous94 Still going strong and performing well! Be sure to disable your operating system's virtual memory to extend the life of the drive. Using the drive as a scratch drive will significantly shorten it's life.
I'm thinking about buying this laptop, how does running final cut run on this laptop? I will upgrade the harddrive and connect it to my 50 inch tv thankyou!!!
i hey i have a question. i just bought a 240 gb ocz agility 3 "for $240" for my mid 2009 macbook pro and i was wondering if you updated the firmware on your ssd beofre using? if so how? what cd should i use to burn lion on to do a fresh install? did you use time machine to back up all of your applications and files? please let me know
@ninjakid164 I didn't have to update mine. Haven't checked recently on the 'how' but when I did install I checked and there was only a PC application capable of updating firmware. Mine shipped of course with the latest firmware at the time from Newegg.
@r0nej00 No, I have a 2,4Ghz core 2 Duo with 4GB of ram and original hard drive 250 Gb at 5400. I was asking, if I upgrade to a configuration near you Finacl Cut Pro X will be faster, or not much. Your reply is enough form me, thank you very much! ;)
@EpureLight The computer will definitely be TONS faster working from SSD if you do not have one, especially in FCP X. File load times, scrubbing through HD footage, etc will be fast but the end render may not be much faster due to the CPU not being a quad core. I think you should definitely get an SSD if you edit video. Then make sure you are working from the SSD with your project and you will see a big performance improvement.
@TapTapFreak Google "TRIM Enabler" and you should find a good download that does it these days. TRIM is simply a feature that tells the operating system which areas of the hard drive are in use. In the long run SSD have slowed because the chipset would have to find out if there was data on the bit before writing to it. With TRIM this is not necessary and it translates to faster I/O on the SSD over time.
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and in about 5 months or so i want to upgrade to an SSD 'cause it kinda seems like my current HDD is going to die (well or gettin pretty slow). I'm atm using this program MacKeeper every few days to clean stuff and make it faster but oh well...
Now my issue: if i get exactly this OCZ Agility 3 SSD what does TRIM mean? Would 'TRIM' make my SSD even faster when i would have it? And i'm on OS X 10.6.8 if this would help you to answer my question.
can you do a benchmark to see what the read/write speed is ? normaly its 500 mb smth but you are using sata 2 like me and i was wondering how many speed is going to drop
@GeekTechniqueTV Hi. Read / write speeds are as advertised via SATA II interface. 260MB/sec sequential. at SATA III speeds the drives get 500MB/sec sequential.
hi i hv this exact ssd in my machine and runing snow leopard instead of lion…just curious hows the battery life of your machines with lion? and u also mention enabling trim, so this drive is not natively support by lion? i found something called trim enabler which enable trim for me on my machine(again, with snow leopard), is that what u found?
@vinc386 Battery life is great on the machine, though with 8GB of RAM in it the battery does drain faster than only 4GB. Apple only supports Apple branded SSDs officially and this is the only type of SSD that will automatically begin using TRIM. Note, you must execute these commands after any major Lion update as it will revert to non TRIM support every update. Evil Apple :))) I used the tutorial here: mactrast.com/2011/07/how-to-enable-trim-support-for-all-ssds-in-os-x-lion/
@r0nej00 thx for the reply, i upgraded to lion n rolled back to SL since the battery life of my machine dropped from >6.5 hr to <3.5 hr while running lion(thats before i got the ssd)…now w. SL+ssd, i have abt 8.5hr, but seems the latest version of lion still has that battery issue, i was wondering how it works for u
there's a "trim enabler for lion"(google it), which does all those for u, and yes, updates will blow that away
Good morning my name is Antonio, I watched the video of the upgrade and I want to ask you if you had problems installing the ssd, because I also installed the same ssd on the same macbook (2.26 Ghz) but only works in SATA 1,5Gb / s
what OS? I had literally zero problems on lion doing it. Like I noted in the video I did not try to migrate over any previously existing image of my old operating system because I wanted it to utilize the drivers and specs that it detected rather than possibly using old spec (maybe that's your issue?) Keep me posted.
Wow! i have 2010 version with lion installed. it takes a while to load CS5 and even to start up. I have a couple of questions, did u install the new HD and RAM by yourself? also, in my macbook pro i have 320 GB HD and about half is used up. is it possible just to add BD space with the agility or do i HAVE to replace my current drive?? Really cool stuff man.
@Hector95100 To my knowledge the 13" macbooks only have one drive bay. Though people have been known to remove the optical drive and install another HDD in that place. That idea sounds more advanced than you can handle, however. As for the rest, I installed everything myself and it all went in great. Installing an SSD replaces your existing drive. What I do now is have OSX and my programs installed on the SSD and I use an external HDD for any storage.

@r0nej00 Good point there.
The 230MB/s vs 78MB/s difference is convincing enough!

@8mret8 It does. But only when the CPU isn't bottlenecking it. So, for instance youll only get max performance during a straight file copy.
