Sometimes I talk to people about the value of scientific thinking, and how it we shouldn't accept irrational beliefs, religious or otherwise, based on "faith". A frequent response I get is something along the lines of: "Well as long as I'm not a fanatic, or not forcing my beliefs on anyone else, it's harmless, so why are you so worked up about it?"
This is an example of the dangers of not valueing evidence based belief. It can literally be a matter of life and death with alternative medicine.
