GREAT entertaining video!!! successfully, makes a *superficial argument at SQL Server costs less, and meets requirements. HOWEVER, outside this funny SNL- quality video [hilarious], is Microsoft know for Tier 1 High Performance, High Security, Enterprise Scale solutions ???
Oracle's has numerous built-in reporting tools: SQL, PL/SQL, PHP/SQL driver.
***
Because Oracle has innovated database science for 30 years the product has become very widely used and far reaching, thus, it takes time to navigate the Oracle Community and separate the marketing-glossy hype, from real world requirements and challenges.
har har ... great fun showing stupid bar charts with percentages. 85% more people beliefing 76% more a stupid statement, if it's simply formulated as percentage ....
If you're a developer, Oracle is a gold mine... especially 10G. We're talking billable hours baby. I LOVE configuration issues. Plus... Oracle is now FREE!!!!! Get your clients to use Oracle.
Haha are you joking? What about the 5000 USD that i had to pay for that Terminal Services Cals on Windows Server 2008, what i didn't pay for the database i'm paying now for the stoopid Microsoft Licencing.
The best of this is when i have to come to my boss with a smile saying that we have to unpack 5 grands for something even unknown for the MS Partner.
It is not true that SQL Server is better than Oracle or vice versa.
Both products can be used to build stable and efficient system and the stability and effectiveness of your applications and databases depend rather from the experience of the database developers and database administrator than from the database's provider.
MS SQL is for home users, enterprise run Oracle on Linux/Unix
It's a know secret, but Microsoft doesn't really have a server OS, they just have a client OS that can also run on some servers, but that is like taking your bicyle to the race track.
SQL Server's locking scheme is much simpler (less mature) and will result in a lot of delays/waits in a heavy OLTP environment. SQL WILL NOT SCALE ASWELL AS ORACLE.
Sure, SQLServer tastes good at first, but after awhile, you find it's usefulness somewhat limited, and it doesn't mix with anything. Try SQLServer with Unix or Linux - can't do it. And they're free. So you end up paying more for the infrastructure to support SQLServer, plus the product itself, and, you find it costs MORE when run on the same size platform as Oracle!
Ehm I don't mind SQL as it does make a lot of things easy, but this ad is just dumb. It's kinda like the Mac advert where they miscall the PC. A decent advertiser would just list the good features about SQL, not condem other peoples product.
Well, lets see, Microsoft SQL...., security.... yeah maybe if we disconnect the server from any network, and as an extra measure we could unplug the power cord too... that will make the most secure and unbreakable data base in the whole world :D
If you are working on small applications then SQL Server makes more sense. If you are working on larger enterprise applications then Oracle makes more sense.
This video was made by the mentally retarded, the driver is a poor devil, and also to interview, so we know that real information is the best oracle database for large enterprises, sql server is for idiots small business
Bipartisan response: very entertaining, but I can see why it would annoy Oracle professionals. Obviously don't use this for making choices between Oracle and SQL Server. As a DBA who manages both SQL Server 2005 and Oracle 10gR2: Oracle does HA, Backup-Restore & Performance better, SQL Server does OS-based Security \ Single-Sign-On (mainly due to only having to deploy on Windows) & Manageability better (Management Studio trumps new web-based DB Control \ Enterprise Manager).
Lets not talk about other Microsoft products like Great Plains or SharePoint. They claim to target enterprise customers but to be frank only a start-up firm with two or three computers which is happy with a 'good enough' solution (as MS promotes them) will go for MS products. How many of the world's top 500 companies would choose Great Plains as against Oracle applications or SharePoint against Oracle's BI/UCM ?
A great video promoted by Microsoft. We surely did hear some great (and false) stuff about SQL as against Oracle 11g. The BI is of course free with SQL but can that match with Oracle's Business Intelligence (especially after Oracle acquired Seibel) ?? The manageability, as per the video, of SQL Server 2005 is great, well, I have my doubts. SQL 2005 boasts of TCO? Honestly, any enterprise using SQL 2005 do not see a ROI at all.
First of all, SQL Server 2005 should be compared to Oracle 10g (which came 2 years early and MS can't still beat it), not 11g.
Secondly, if I were some corporation executive in charge of choosing between these two databases, and watched this commercial, Hell I would DEFINATELLY NOT CHOOSE SQL SERVER.
I'm scared of MS SQL server. Every RDBMS has its quirks, that's for sure. For some reason I don't see how the MS quirks benefit me - if it's got to be different, why not make it better instead of just different?
I must point out that I am an amateur among amateurs and have never administered an Oracle database.
For an address book try MS Access of OpenOffice DB. Building an app, want cheap quality? MySQL, PGSQL or SQLite. Corporate? Go Oracle!
SQL server does not compare with Oracle. It does not run on UNIX servers. It is prone to viruses and corruption. Limited in scalability and guranteed to perform poorly on speed on VLDBs. No wonder Oracle is still the best! Certainly SQL Server is for babies only as in this video!! Microsoft should stick to the home market; not corporates :-)
u know, most corp. don't use and or NEED RAC! Most business apps that are run by corp have some sort of downtime. Hell, youtube goes down for maintenance. RAC is cool but not 50,000,000,000 cool. FOR most guys.
FYI - RAC is not only used for High Availability but also for scalability. In fact it is one of the most cost effective way to scale up as your business grows on commodity hardware. As far as downtime goes, every organization would love to have zero downtime if they can afford it. Having downtimes, even if they are planned, is not cool at all for any company
Do you understand how Oracle really works how it is really uses a Unix-based kernel for it's own internals, and VMS-inspired technology for clustering.
Now here's the question: who's the dummiest guy in the world? I thought it was the MTV cartoon characters, Beavis and Butt Head, but I was wrong, the video presenter alone is far the most idiot one! He's working for the wrong commercial, he should present those disgusting teleshop commercials, suits him better!
Makes you wonder if all of these big pharmaceutical companies spend a lot more on advertising than they do on drug research and testing.
As for Microsoft SQL Server and this video, its difficult to take any product promotion that is this silly seriously. The only legitimate point they made seems to be that Oracle's enterprise level products are [news flash] expensive. Now that took nerve. Microsoft is probably the last company that should accuse anybody of being greedy.
