At my Granddad’s funeral last year I drew the short straw & got the job of researching & delivering a eulogy.
I couldn’t be bothered, so just made up a load of stuff about his brave actions on D-Day & in France/Holland in the following months- I got most of it from the plot of the first ‘Medal of Honour’.
It went down brilliantly- but it got written up in the local press & now some angry Veterans groups are onto me for ‘undue honours’. Why can’t they just let it rest, it was 65yrs ago!?
Every WWII veteran alive these days are inextricably linked to one another. So, what ever you do to honor/slander/or tell half-truths about one, you say about the group as a whole. I'm not casting judgment on you or others who don't have much enthusiasm for our honored veterans of years past. Just be aware that your grandfather is/was a microcosm and eyewitness to what was the greatest conflict human history has ever seen. This sort of thing should NOT be trivialized.
Check out the book MY COUSIN KILLED HITLER, based on the story of Marshal Zhukov. It tells a family secret about him. If only Hitler knew that one of those he hunted became the hunter instead.
Another American HERO!!!!! Thank you !!! I wonder to myself if he new my Dad who also served in the 84th division Robert J Patterson from Pennsylvania
My Father was in the Railsplitter Division. 335th K company. Stanley J Kurowski. I always look at these video's to see if he comes up in one. He's gone now. I still look for him. He would not tell stories. He had nightmares all his life. Your Grandad is great. Its tough for them to tell these stories.
My great grandad, as far as I know drove the trucks which took broken tanks back to be fixed, I think. he died when I was 7, but im sure glad i got to meet him and my gran before they past away :)
My grandfather was a P-51 fighter pilot who got shot down once over allied territory but managed to bail out. He flew escort missions for american bombers into germany and back.
He was an ace back then (he brought down 14 german planes)
im really proud of him and like to listen to his stories.
my grandfather was an army vet who served just before the japanese surrendered and he was about to be shipped there too but the war was over so he worked in camp pendleton, california which used to be an Army base, now its a marine corps base, I miss him he passed away 6 years ago
my grandfather was a WWII vet, he died 4 years ago at the age of 82, he drove truck through hell and back delivering supplies. im proud of him and the other vets who helped this country.
I am happy that these videos like this are being made to preserve the memories of these great individuals. My grandfather served in WWII in the navy. He got captured at sea after his ship was sunk by submarine and spend 1 year in pow camp somewhere in east germany, he said it was liberated by russians. I wish he would of talked more about the war but he didnt like to talk about it.
He wrote a lot though about the war he said but he never allowed anyone to read it, several dozen notebooks. After he died I got them, I want to read them but I havent, I cant pull myself to go read his notebooks on his time in the war and pow camp. I guess I just got it put into me after all his years of not letting anyone read them that I am just doing what he wanted. That and I guess I can finally somewhat understand, I dont like to talk about Iraq or my war either.
It seems to have really helped the veterans who have talked to us. But I know it is too painful for others to relive what they've seen. Thank you all for your sacrifice.
@84ndman Please you must share. WWII survivors are dying out every day and we need people like you with precious historical documents to share them. I respect his decision to keep it a secret but all journals are written for a reason: to write down history like never before so that even centuries after you're gone people will still know and remember you.
Please I have been doing research on World War II and i dont think there is any time period in history as important as that
no problem, i know quite a lot of ww2 veterans and ive literally spent hours with them talking about the war, missions they went on ect. i find it fascinating!!! ive talked to british and polish soldiers so its nice to hear from an american soldier!!!
my godfathers neighbour was a british commando, he was involved in 12 missions behind enemy lines, some of the things he told me. he would really go into detail. how many germans he killed, how he killed them. but the same re occuring question he used to ask was why did he survive? he was no better or worse soldier than his friends!! its a question he says he will have to ask his maker when the time comes!!!
I think Mr. Bennett wonders the same thing... why him? I tell him it is because he tells great stories and we all need to hear history from the people who lived it. He is a gifted storyteller. We're lucky to have him.
I read a lot about WWII and a major theme that runs through it is how well POWs were treated by the Americans. Thank you Mr. Bennett for giving us a great country!
This Video Should Have Alot Of Views And Ratings Because This Truely Shows AN AMERICAN HERO! Godbless. War is hell. You HAVE been to Hell and back. Bless you and everyone else who is a veteran living or dead of WW2
My Dad's name was Capt. Milton E. Haut. He was a battilion surgeon. Please excuse the spelling. He went from Normandy all the way to meet up with the ruskies at the Rhoer River. He was also in the "Battle of the Bulge". About 15 years ago, before my Dad passed on, he told me he saw himself in a WW@ documentary film. About two years ago, I finally saw it. It was my Dad. Doing what he did all his life... saving people. Let me know if this rings a bell. Thanks.
Mr. Bennett said he doesn't remember meeting your dad but he can look your dad up in the Railsplitter book... do you know what division/unit your dad was in?
No, I think his wife really didn't like him having guns around. He also had a German friend who liked to trade stuff with him. Mr. Bennett still has tons of other stuff though.
oh, thats good, i know like 3 world war vets and one traded a captured MP3008 for beer, one traded a german luger for a 100$ target gift card. and the other gave away 4 japaneese grenades for a a DvD player. If there were going to do that they should of traded me because i have all thouse things -.-
I think he might need to know the regiment as well? Any information you have on division/unit/regiment would be good and Mr. Bennett can look you dad up in his books on the Railsplitters.
We are losing these World War II veterans at an alarming rate. This man wasn't in a movie. He's the real deal and deserves our admiration and respect. Thanks for your service sir.
i know my neighbor served in the pacific islands and he died about 2 years ago. now my great grandpa who was in the navy in the pacific is not doing well at all.
