well, i don't know if this is the best Star that the Dead ever played but it certainly is one of the cleanest versions I've ever heard...thanks a million for bringing this gem to us!
I was THERE, 16 years old. Later saw Zappa in same theatre. Glorious baroque balconies, red velvet curtains, excellent acoustics. Takes me back, thanks to the person who posted.
DeadFriends, you are invited to enjoy a unique, in-depth master class on the original Dark Star off Live/Dead. Concentration is placed on exploring the individual and group improv concepts that are used to create this masterpiece of improvisation. You'll DIG this, promise:)
Open a box of wine, type in "Dave Frank" Dark Star on YT:)
As per usual and when I find one of the Grateful Dead songs that I love, there are like a zillion great versions. Sheesh! There is like only 24 hours in a day =)
Excellent Video - I've just been reading 'A Long Strange Trip' Dennis McNally (AKA Scrib)'s book about the Dead and it is wonderful to see images of the Bus and Neil and the Pranksters here.
Great clear sound quality, so much different in some ways from their energy toward this song from the previous year--perhaps more relaxed but far from casual--it is always fun to guess at who is leading the direction of the music at any one point of time in this piece, lots of push and pull but always crisp and decisive.
I began to enjoy the dead long ago--'searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion' and 'shackled in chains of illusion, delusion of living and dead'--and still do.
They say what cannot be said. They speak my mind for me. This song is the spark to the fuse.
