OMG i need this camera. It will make my videos 100x better. Using a flip now. and i need something like this, something with some zoom, focus, and less grain Someones selling this on Craigslist for $575 "Dad can I get it?" "No."
When we are in Cine mode - the AGC is greyed out and inaccessible. We are still playing with it.. but your shots look GREAT in the dark. JEALOOUUUUSSS
Ok all I am getting is complete crap in low light.. would you let me know all the settings you have going in the dark cus I have a shoot in a club in a few weeks.
I really need to make this work!
We have been fiddling with this all day and in MXP mode this is giving major grain on all the shots even wiht all the lights on in the house.. and I need to shoot in a really dark dance club soon! PLEASE HELP ASAP
Wow, you people are complaining about this low light??? This isnt even in 25p!! 25p has even better performance. No this isnt perfect, but its damn good!
You can have 1/25 @ 50i recording with this camera. and it looks exactly like 25p recording.
I recomend Shutter priority mode for lowlight action because you cant control ther AGC limit in movie mode. And you have color degrading and loss of detail.
Wow. Can you tell me the specific settings you used in order to keep noise out of the darker shots? One of the better HF S100 night shots I've seen. Well done!
thank you...settings::24p and choose cine mode, minimal movement and slow zooming(if needed) is key to get the best picture. I did use auto focus in these shots, but manual focus will definately produce a better picture overall.
I was going to get two Canon HF200 units sight unseen, but I have seen comments saying how poor a low light performer it was even compared to the HF S100. The HF200 is so affordable, but if it handles low light worse than the S100 I would have gone nuts! Any help out there on sucessful shoots, tips, etc., would be much appreciated.
Any thoughts on portable lights? I was thinking about getting a monopod with an extension arm and put a nice 15 - 30Watt light. Will that make a dfference?
I did a whole weekend of shooting with this camera. It certainly helps to bring a portable light, which I mounted on an arm and carried around with me. Most people found the light annoying, but they get used to it and the pictures that the camera takes are much much better. The best compromise position was 24p, 18db Gain limit, 40X zoom, vivid color, 17Mbps. The imagery is very clear, low light performance is decent to very good. These setting definitely add a filmic quality. I am happy.
I just got the Canon HF s100 to shoot night club music events and music events in general. The low light performance seems pretty bad, but I think 30p may be the compromise video format. Does anyone have tips on how to improve low light condition shooting?
I was going to purchase another HF S100 to have multi-camera shoots that match, but despite it's relative great video in well lit and daylight conditions, I am just not that pleased.
A few weeks ago i shot a music video at night with very limited light conditions. and personally i found the hf s100 impressive. yes a light source of some sort would definately improve the picture, you do however need to make sure your camcoder settings are set the maximum to get the most out of the hf s100. But i think uv bought the right camera for what you are looking to do.
Did you use 50i or 25p (or 60i/24p U specs) for this video? I hear low-light performance is rather bad at higher frame rates, but switching over to cine mode increases low-light quality significantly.
I am also wondering whether the sacrifice of more manual controls and smaller stills in favour of a longer zoom and wider angle is worth it i.e. I'm deciding between this camcorder and the Legria HF 21.
the video was shot in 50i althought i must admit low light quality looks much better in 25p as later realised. iv found the low light capablities brilliant for a small camcorder.

What settings do you use in dark venues or at night? It looks like Cinemode 30P isthe best compromise.
