@cracks21229 "Rock and Roll Circus" is one of the best rock concert films of all time. I cannot fathom why it stayed on the shelf all those years. I heard a rumor that the Stones felt that the Who had shown them up but Jagger's performance is outstanding. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Sympathy for the Devil" are amazing and the way it was filmed was so outstanding. It's timeless and very rich in the way it looks. The colors, for instance. Everyone seems wasted, though, LOL!
@lemurianchick I agree that Rock and Roll Circus is a great movie. The way I understand it, it was the first performance by John with Yoko without the Beatles and the last performance of Brian Jones. Brian Jones looks particularly wasted. There is something slightly disturbing about the event. I think it has to do with how wasted everyone was, as you note.
@lemurianchick It was a strange time for the Stones. They were leaving the psychedelic period and entering a very bluesy, drug damaged era that would reach its peak (or valley) with Altamont and bottom out with Exile on Main Street. It is amazing Exile is such a great album.
'Thats Why I live in New York, people here leave me alone', it's almost like his famous last words even though he said it 3 years before he died. Such a sad loss :(. RIP John Gone but Never forgotten.
@ELIMINATORRRR Well the strange thing was it wasn't a New Yorker that killed John, but some stupid inbred cracker from the deep south--a bible thumping asshole--figures!!!
What a waste hey !!! John's spirit lives on through his music and his legacy is strong amd big. I think, Jim Morrison and John Lennon would have made a great writers duo.Poetry of Jim and music of John.Wow...,Imagine that!?!?!!!
John was the best Beatle. I liked how he dove right into the Psychedelic rock stuff that was absent from U.S. before hand. it's so hard to say who's the best tho cuz Paul McCartney kind of invented Metal.... I wish they all where still alive :-/
@BloodShotNow "They all where (sic) still alive" You didn't catch Paul on his Summer tour, I take it? Any yes, Ringo is stll kicking as well. Do you even read the news? I'm guessing you don't vote? (thank God)
This is 1977. So, this basically disproves Albert Goldman's piece of shit book, where he said John was a physical wreck druggie living in filth and hiding in the bedroom. Here he is, during the years Goldman talked about, looking healthy, laughing and enjoying his family.
john was troubled..unfortunately a lot of what goldman said was true...all u have to do is look at photos of john in 79 and '80...and then look at photos of paul...from the same time...john looks like he's in his 50's...and this is a guy who doesnt work or have a job...and doesnt have any money stress worries...
but his lifestyle...drugs...ciggies...and his bipolar depression aged him terribly....
John looked extremely thin during that time, but there isn't any proof that he had a drug addiction. So much of his intent was just to make John look bad and he was called out by tons of people. The pics of John in that period show him relatively happy, with his family. His outlook on life from those 1980 interviews/songs had changed drastically. I don't think he looked severely older than Paul either, but then he was older than Paul anyway.
John loved going out around the city. In 1975 he made a trip to a Yonkers Park for a photoshoot. He then stopped at the Broadway Diner on Broadway just over the Bronx border. I go in there quite often and remember that he once had coffee there too.
I remember when I was in the bronx early in the morning and saw John & Yoko at the local new stand.. As they walked by I stopped them to say hello. We talked for several minutes and then they departed. I walked away and people were staring at me in such an odd way. Turns out the John and Yoko weren't there because its October 11, 2010..
HE SHOULD HAVE TOOK HIS FIRST BORN SON JULIAN who he choose to forget TO THE CIRCUS as an artist he was the best BUT AS A FATHER HE WAS NO GOOD how do you honestly TELL YOUR FIRST BORN son MY SECOND SON meaning SEAN was planned BUT NOT HIS FIRST BORN SON the scars he left on his FIRST BORN SON WAS HUGE but he was too busy with his ono & this IS THE GUY WHO WAS ABOUT PEACE & no concern for his first born son HIM & ONO WAS MEANT TO BE because IT,S ABOUT SEX john knew that SHAME ON THE WHOREMONGER
@LVEMEDO Oh!! Give him break!! You pompous, sanctimonious, twerp. You sound just like that other bible bashing freak who murdered Lennon, Mark Chapman. I was never a fan of Lennon when he went solo but i recognise him for the great artist he was. If your looking for a Saint i suggest Lourdes. Lennon was a deeply flawed human being...like most of us. That's in part why he was such a great artist. Now piss off you misogynistic racist cretin!!!
@daubreyjaneweirdsley FIRST OFF LOOK AT WHAT THEY WERE PROJECTING ON US NO WAR NO ANIMALS KILLED yet the circus IS THE MOST CRUEL THING YOU CAN DO TOO AN ANIMAL cage wild animals & ONO HAD A APARTMENT IN THE DAKOTA just for fur coats that JOHN LENNON BOUGHT FOR HER & THEY HAD Two MORE APTS IN THE DAKOTA pretty scary for someone LAST NIGHT THE WIFE SAID oh boy when your DEAD you don,t take nothing WITH YOU but your soul GOD BLESS YOU ALL that worship LENNON & ONO YOUR LOST bring it on
@LVEMEDO I was unaware that Charlie Manson had been released. When did you get out? You are utterly insane & make no sense whatever. You're obviously in urgent need of psychiatric treatment. Lennon was not a Saint he was a man/artist. Only fools such as you would feel let down by Lennon because of your own inability to think for yourself. Or as Bob Dylan once said "don't follow leaders watch the parking meters". Au revoir my crazy, not very bright friend.
@daubreyjaneweirdsley MERCI BEAUCOUP first I LOVE THE BEATLES & WHEN THEY SPLIT I LIKED JOHN,S MUSIC THE BEST I,M NOT TRYING TO BRING JOHN DOWN WE ALL CRIED DECEMBER 8 1980 & IT WAS SUCH A PAINFUL DEATH HE HAD HE WAS ONLY 40YRS i am trying to make sense of the man WHO STARTED THE MOST POPULAR & GREATEST BAND EVER so maybe if you stop & think about it IT,S NOT A GOOD THING TO PUT JOHN AS A GOD HE WAS FLAWED LIKE US ALL by the way your wrong MANSON IS STILL IN JAIL TY FOR YOUR HURTFUL WORDS
@LVEMEDO Dear sweet LVEMEDO. I have been deeply unkind. By its very nature we/you/i/life is complex and very contradictory. There is no black or white. We should never be quick to judge others for our own failings. I wish you you well in the struggle for self.
Mick Jagger, huh? Old friend? That means John and Mick probalby knew each other before! But damn, I would so ask Mick about this and The Beatles. LOL, Mick was eating popcorn at the begging, and as he is leaving John you can see he seems to be taking a note.
That wanker at the end is just trying to provoke poignancy when what John actually meant was that no one bugged him constantly in the streets of New York for autographs etc. Not that there were no violent people there. Duh, it's NYC!
@blackslick73 I also love when he says "I like the clowns and the little dogs." It's great because we know that even though John could be acid and nasty--he had this other side that was so childlike and sweet. How it survived all those years of fame like few in the world have experienced is amazing. But I always think of that when I hear a song of his like Dear Prudence which seems to capture it.
John seems very happy here and relaxed. There is no tension in his face or anger. He looks relieved, almost like someone who is on vacation...and I guess he was for about 5 years. Imagine taking 5 years off from your life and work and spending it with your wife, children and friends. That's what he did and I think it was a good time for him. He needed that time off to get away from the music business and the public eye.
@beatlejuice72 that may be part of it, but I remember hearing from a Paul McCartney in an interview that John was going crazy with frustration because he wasn't allowed to write. Literally any song.
I was 10 years old and at the same show with my family. We went to dinner afterward and lo and behold, who comes walking by the restaurant window? You guessed it, John Lennon! My brothers and I went nuts! My late parents suggested we get run out and get an autograph and our responses were "Oh no! We couldn't do THAT!" UGH! Silly us! Great memory!
@gretschviking I was about 4 because my dad used to take me away to a lot. Imagine how hard it must've been for this child to loose his dad. Well my dad left the country when I was 6.
@gretschviking Were your parents Lennon fans? I'm trying to do the math...if you were 10 seems they could be in their late 30's or maybe they were older.....just curious.
John seemed very at peace here during this time. I think that taking a few years off from recording music professionally although he was still making demos and stuff was the best thing he ever did. There's no doubt in my mind that had he lived he would have gotten closer to Julian and reconnected with Paul and George. No reunion as The Beatles, but they definitely would have worked together again.

This has nothing to do with the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll circus. That was filmed in 1969 and this circus was clearly from the mid-70's.
