I am a huge Zappa fan since forever, but Beefheart's music does not do much for me. Some of it is bizarre and funny. Musically, though, I don't care for it.
Musician and artist Don Van Vliet, who performed a complex brand of experimental rock under the name Captain Beefheart, died Friday December 17, 2010. He was 69. *** Rest in Peace, Captain ***
The Captain sailed into uncharted water leading the way for many to follow ,even if they do not realise it so many bands owe him for his PURE MUSICAL GENIUS.
@PerryCoxPF93 they all hung out in the same circle...zappa and van vliet were high school buddies...zappa recorded 'trout mask' on his own record label.
Man he looks so different here! But it does match the voice who said "So this was a drive-in restaraunt in Hollywood...So this was a drive-in restaraunt in Hollywood...So this was a drive-in restaraunt in Hollywood..."
You have to think of them as pioneers of their era- no one else sounded like this- they represented a weird transition from the netherworld of previous music to the underside of a stinky place that most people dare not travel. Or something.
this is a message to people who "dont like" the captain...you either DONT get his music and DONT like it...or you DO get his music and DO like it...you CANT understand it and NOT like it...if you dont like it...you dont get it....and thats that
Okay, I followed up for you turkeys out there. The song was originally on The Spotlight Kid album, 1972 PLEASE do yourselves a big favor and boogey on over to the Captain Beefheart Radar Station and learn some history lessons folks!
As far as I know it's from a West German music show called Beat Club, which from the clips I've seen looks like probably the best rock show ever - for the acts featured, the performances, and those great psychedelic backgrounds. I've also seen great clips on here of Can and MC5 from the same show.
How can you listen to the Captain and not realize you have seen something special? jeez, we are inundated with britneyslut stuff. If you listen to a clean recording of this, and not to mention, "Mirror Man"....Good God...it transports you to another world. I mean, if you play guitar....you know...these cats had it going on.. yeah, greendayists, try this at home!!
punch yourself in the face right now for referring to captain beefheart as a fat idiot...i shall call you BEANS,ok beans?...this guy is a legend,beans...go listen to celine dion and matchbox 20,beans...ok beans...im sorry beans did i say something wrong beans?
saw him at NYC town hall in '72 and the opening act was a magician. the audience kept yelling at him to "disappear"! then up was beb seger-hard to believe, but true, but even harder to listen to. then CB tore it up.
ditto-captain's music has more than stood th etest of time.
Words are inadequate to describe how good this is. I cant believe I didnt get it at the time. I even saw him live but was too thick to pay attention then. I wish I could turn the clock back. Or is it he was ahead of it all back then and had turned the clock forward. Hold onto that long lunar 'Thought'and let it float.
Thanks for posting this incredible live version of a great tune. The band nailed the uncanny syncopations musically as well as physically, and Beefheart's seemed to be at the top of his game vocally (I guess it's true what opera singers say about fat making the back more resonant). Don't let the fact that it rocks fool you: It took hard work to get that good.
We had fun with the Captain at UofT in around '73, incredible concert, great vibes, fractured memories, I believe the pre-show was someone called 'Audio Master' but never been able to track it down, great show tho, don't rem much, the next weekend it was Mac Rebbenack (sp. Dr. John), it were fun times and great music!
gotta give it up to roy estrada on the bass representing east l.a. and chicano power to the fullest!!! - a true ese vato loco...and i've always felt this is the best beefheart "live" video online..."on german tv." those germans handled the production reel nice.
I agree with you iggypot. Roy was a real driving force. They were a great group of musicians. The Captain's "mystique" often detracts from the fact that all of them were innovative. Even the later members like Gary Lucas. I first saw the band perform in '68. I've been a believer ever since.
I watched a lot of his movies....on purple haze, cube and the like.....try Trout Mask Replica on some mesc. His music parallels his paintings... unique
I'm kinda new getting into Captain Beefheart,so I can't compare His different Phases...all I know is this is a really Nice groove!!!Freaky,Funky and Fun!!!!
This is pretty cool, but is on the downward curve of when they were good. Hence the repetition i think. Now if only there was some videos on here from the trout mask period.
"Kind of Blue" is a jazz album. A comparison to the urban blues styles is alot more accurate; Bukka White, Mississppi Fred Macdowell, even John Lee Hooker. Jazz is a form suited to taste just as much as Beefheart is.
haha spanked. well done. i would totally agree with you. may not be a musically complex song, but since when in musical history has that mattered as much as listening and enjoying? just look at modern day music.
After 7 beers, maybe you think Miles Davis is God, too. Don't be a jazz snob. I do enjoy "Kind of Blue", but it's like comparing apples and oranges. Both are great fruits, when ripe and flavorful. What the two musical expressions have in common is a certain complexity and depth, though you might think Beefheart more simple-minded. The richness of the guitar interplay, rhythm and vocal experimentation is equally cool, so just revel in it.

I stick with my original post -- I don't hear anything worthy in Cap't Beefheart's songs. No snobiness intended. I just hear nothing of value in it. And I'm a person who can find value in pop rock, classical, opera, rock'n'roll, hard rock, country music, musicals, boogie woogie, disco, new wave, grunge, jazz, blues, adult contempo, big band, etc. etc. But in songs like this? I hear nothing but bland repitition. No insult intended. That's just what I hear.
Good point. Personally I don't see what people hear in opera, or classical singing in general, except maybe the choral kind. I love the Captain though. He's absolutely one of a kind.
This particular song isn't the best, but make no mistake: Captain Beefheart's work overall is far from bland and repetitive, and he's one of the true musical greats. You're making the mistake of judging him from a track which comes from one of his weakest and most commercial albums. At his experimental peak, Van Vliet is the very antithesis of bland reptition and as a blues fan you should at least be able to appreciate the Delta blues of his debut album, Safe As Milk.
I just listened to them. Electricity definitely has merit. (But Don's voice still grates.) "Big Dummy" not as much, but still quite listenable. However, I still stand by my assessment of "Booglarize".

The band lineup
Art Tripp (Ed Marimba) — Drums
Mark Boston (Rockette Morton) — guitar
Bill Harleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo) — slide guitar
Elliot Ingber (Winged Eel Fingerling) — Guitar
Roy Estrada (from the Mothers of Invention and later Little Feat) — bass
The lineup (minus Estrada) appeared on Cap's "The Spotlight Kid" album, which featured "I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby"
