I think that this scene (beginning to end) is to tell Henry that he has been devoting his life to this child that isn't even one that he wanted in the first place, that has nearly zero chance in the real world, and that doesn't resemble him in the slightest. It's clearly not good for him. It's turning him into something that's worth just about nothing: something almost equal to eraser shavings.
