The reason that we need ethnic studies is because the general Social Studies curriculum in America does not teach appropriately and accurately the many ethnic groups that make up America. There is no one "culture" that immigrants need to learn, people seem to forget that there were American Indians, Mexicans, African Americans and Asians here since the making of America (and before). It would benefit all Americans to learn about all of the United States history not just the glorified parts.

I don't understand, I am in college taking a chicano studies class and a survey of United States History. There is very little mention of minority involvement in the Survey class. They made a brief mention of civil rights movement but no mention of chicano civil rights they focused on the black movement. I'm mexican american and CONSTANTLY notice that the majority of history classes neglect to mention any minority besides Native Americans and Black history. We need ethnic studies.

Just like any other ethnich program, it introduces the minds of students to the history of other cultures of the world. look up the "Raza Studies" curriculum for the Tuscon Unified School District this is what they are trying (and rightly so) to ban in AZ as a taxpayer paid program. Raza Studies is taught by openly Marxist, ethno-centric teachers whose sole purpose is to promote Chicano supremacy. Take a look at TUSD RAZA STUDIES. Dyson is one of the reasons why one should not spend tuition dollars at Georgetown....go to Hillsdale instead.

Instead of teaching these children of predominantly hispanic descent that they are individuals and have all the opportunity to do what they wish with their lives, they are teaching them that they are victims and there is "no hope" for them. It's sad and sets these kids up for failure.

We fought to get ethnic studies in schools and now it is being banned because some claim it is teaching students ethnic chauvinism. Reality check - Hispanics, Asians & African Americans have all go through a period history of oppression in America.
