I use to live in Baltimore. I now live in a small town in VA. Baltimore is a dangerous city to live in. All you see are drugs and crime on the streets of Baltimore. Baltimore city is also getting too expensive to live in anymore.
Damn. Detroit City? Batimore? this guys itchin to get robbed n shot! maybe 1966 was a better time in America. I live in the woods of Northern Wisconsin thanks to a brief time I spent in D.C. Baltimore AND Detroit. Americas Cities are crime ridden War Zones. i was born to late. Wish i coulda seen the inner citys that were worhty of song.
I think he's referring to the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore in particular that attracted many people from the Appalachain region to work in the factories there. Now it is somewhat hipster central, lots of expensive home stores, trendy restaurants, etc. Baltimore is an odd town, Charles street is as lovely as anything on the upper west side of NYC while 2 blocks away Howard St is an abandoned wreck.
One of my favorite Bobby Bare songs. Saw Bobby in 1961 in little town in Iowa before he became popular. That night Bobby also did great impressions of Elvis & Dean Martin. Paid a whopping 50 cents (US Currency) to see Bobby. Thanks for upload.
I lived there for a couple years, 3 blocks from Greenmount Ave. on St. Paul and Chase, boy howdy there's some crime. Although Baltimore holds alot of history. its a shame to see the deterioration
I worked with Bobby iin the sixties at 'The Nashville room ' in London. my band 'The Tumbleweeds' backed him also in Germany. great times, great songs, cheers Johnny Regan
First time I ever heard this song was just now Awesome!!! I don't know who compared Bobby Bare to Obama, but there is no comparison. Bobby Bare HAS CLASS and he is a CLASS ACT!!!! Ten Stars. I love his music because you feel like you are inhis shoes!!!!
One of my favorite songs. There is a lot of truth in the lyrics. It is a hard life trying to 'cratch a living' out of the rocky soil in Tennessee. A lot of hillbillies were attracted to the east coast (Baltimore) because of the factory jobs. Trouble was the cost of living there was a lot higher and they were no better off. In fact, many couldn't even go back home, because of either the lack of money or pride. As a result there were a lot of hillbilly bars and country music stations in Baltimore.
Explains the "Thank God I'm a country-boy" tradition at the 7th inning stretch of Orioles games. People today can not imagine why such a song would represent Baltimore.
