  • nice Canadian tuxedo!

  • Ever since the dog... - priceless.

  • Your a baaaadddd man!! Kudos!!

  • what a talent... RIP

  • I see where Jack Black got his moves from!

  • What a great songwriter!

  • @illbethatguy His character is magnetic for me. The charm, the sense of calm and ease he exhibits, those shifting eyes of absolute observation; these near intangibles are how he stands out as remarkable.

  • Every since the dog got drunk and died, and Momma went to prison.

Can it get any better than that.

  • hahahahahaha wow

  • Id love to see a vid of bobby bare doing Quaaludes Again...

  • Is he on drugs?

  • "YOU DON'T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN NARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRLIN"

  • Steve Goodman (July 25, 1948 – September 20, 1984)

  • What a SMILE!! could it be an illegal one?

  • WOW. not much more I can say

  • I don't know if I've ever seen any artist who was so visibly happy while performing. He radiates, man.

  • " This MANS work SHOUD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO COLLECT DUST"!

WHAT A HUMAN BEING, thank YOU SO, SO MUCH For posting this.

    Respectfully,

    Dan Gross, Saint Louis, Mo.

  • Allan. David ALLAN Coe.

  • I never 'liked' country music back in the 70's, however, I did like one, this one...just wanted to thank you for giving me this excellent song, that I still love today!

  • Wonderful clip. I didn't realize how different his version is from David Allan Coe's.

  • I love this guy.

  • Steve Goodman was a satiric musical genius.

He made people feel good about being mocked.

And he had the chops to back it up.

    I miss him.

He was the best of the best.

  • @wmg111 Yes. What else is there to say?

  • David didn't do right by not using your REAL last verse. I liked it better than what he change it to. Sorry Steve...he should not have done that to you.

  • is he the original writer of this song?

  • like his instruments around 1:50 most.

  • Let's go to school here and pay attention!!!!!!

  • Let's go to school here abd pay attention!!!!!!

  • What a song - I love it

  • I THOUGHT WILLIE FUCKING HAGGARD WROTE THIS SONG?

    NICE SHOW STEVE!

  • Anyway to get JP and SG both doin this song.

That would be a helluva concert.

  • don't you just wish you could have a cheep beer with steve and shoot the breeze?

  • @adrock1011 Yes!! he is so much more interesting than the people who sang his songs....at least I think so.

  • @Mamaluvsmambo

I believe so as well.... I sure hated when they closed down the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, TX

  • @BlizzDawg I hated it when they closed down the Armadillo too....Google DAC........better yet, don't. I am still having nightmares about that man. There are benefits to getting older....you get smarter, well, at least most of us do. Unfortunately...DAC......oh well, I guess we all can't grow up...sigh. If you look him up, Midnight Blue was a VERY early cable show..I mean..EARLY, when cable was only avail at night. Mormon? 7 Wives?? Sheesh.

  • @Mamaluvsmambo

You cant go home to the Armadillo anymore! We moved away and went back down to texas a few years back, we were shocked man.

  • gotta luv that last verse.

  • i didnt think this song could git better but it jus did

  • Genius

  • man he was fantastic!

  • anyone know the name of this show?

  • @dalet63 It was from 'Bobby Bare & Friends". Although I do have the original show, without time-bar, this is raw unedited footage ie not as broadcast (hence the time bar).

  • @1000Magicians Thanks..RIP Mr Goodman

  • @1000Magicians Not sure but giving it a try.. I think the Micky Gilley Show?

  • Who is the show host in the baseball cap?

  • @llarzelere Bobby Bare

  • @llarzelere You're in your 50's and you didn't know who Bobby Bare was? I think you're trying to pull someone's leg!!

  • Goodman was overlooked? That's news to me. The man wrote "the city of new orleans" -goddamn that alone made him a legend.

  • @seymourbbest Relatively overlooked, yes. And greatly missed.

  • david allen coe sings it so much better then him but its still a good song

  • steve goodman is a perfect example of songwriters who are talented and overlooked. thanks for uploading this

  • What an absolute delight! He has such soul ful eyes that are full of mischief and charm. I never knew he wrote the fabulous song: City of New Orleans that I recently just "re-discovered". I was a little young when he was doing well, but some of his songs stick out in my mind and I never even knew it was Steve that wrote them. I'm so glad that I re-discovered him. I'm sorry he's passed but his musical legacy lives forever.

  • Co-written with John Prine for David Allen Coe

  • Thank you for this! What a perfect musician. I saw him back in the seventies.

  • this is great. thanks so much for posting this.

  • Brilliant! Bravi, John and Steve!

  • We lreally ost something when that guy passed.

  • Steve Goodman was an incomparable stage presence, a musician of unerring artistry no matter what genre of music he played - and he could play them all, blues, rock, country, pop, jazz, et al., - a songwriter who used insight and humor equally well in his lyrics, and most importantly, a wonderful person. There was, and is, nobody like him; he was a true original. His time on earth was way too brief, but he left us his amazing catalog of original tunes and his beautiful smile.

  • I think Steve's faux country voice is better than the natural voice he used to sing his folk songs.

  • Boy he had a bit of Hank Willims Sr in his voice

  • @hsad1234 actually he's poking fun at country's past in a very reverent way. he was a huge fan, and very decent human being. he used to tour with jethro burns of homer and jethro. i'm sure he would appreciate your compliment

  • @hsad1234 That's what I thought! Sounded like old Hank.

  • Classic - way ahead of his time.

  • The perfect country and western song. Older facebook people might recognize it. It's a great song and I would have to agree that it's the perfect country and western song.

  • This dude is a genius

  • This dude is nutty as squirel shit. Thanks for writing the song tho!

  • @neffzilla that exspression is really funny.

  • That's classic!

  • man, Steve Goodman has some creepy eyes. Genius though. Watching videos of willie nelson, jerry reed, johnny cash, and etc, just reminds me so much of my dad, r.i.p. He was a country singer songwriter from New Orleans and I remember him playing these songs around the house. Oh well. A beautiful time in America, never to be seen again except for on youtube huh, thanks youtube.

  • I beg to differ, eyes, windows of the soul, Bootleg plays all them good songs, if we could just get an audience

  • @chimpkilla Who was your dad?

  • Love that Chicago shorty!

  • Great video...very funny. rate it a 10. Also love it by John Prine..rate it a 10 also!!!

  • Steve was a blast to see live in the early 70s! Steve, John Prine, Bonnie Kolac, the Holsteins, and the rest of the folk club scene on Lincoln Ave. were one of my favorite memories of that age.

  • @helmuttdvm Ditto. I never realized till years later how much good music and talented people I saw at Somebody Else's Troubles and the Earl of Old Town in the 70's.

  • Is that Bobby Bare Sr. hosting...his son Bobby Bare Jr. is One of my favorite singers

  • @NateJames1 yes

  • amazing, cole, to me messed this song up and made money.

  • at least he doesnt mess up his name...

    it's COE!

  • Rest bin peace Steve.. See you on the other side..

  • My old man grew up with Steve. It makes me happy to see people know and remember him.

  • All the times I've heard the DAC version, and sung - drunk maybe?? - I've never heard this version.

Love to see Jamey Johnson put the two together.

  • Thanks...

  • because they are supposed to?

  • I have played ths clip a thousand times ! my favourit4! fer sher. thaks for posting.

  • Why do the best people die so young ?

  • @d088808862 To keep the rest of us humble.

  • may we always be rightious upright and be strong

  • @d088808862 In his case, he knew it was coming. Maybe that frees a person in a way, to do what's in his heart & soul. I remember seeing him on Soundstage with Arlo Guthrie & Hoyt Axton. What a show.

  • @d088808862 because they're too good to carry on living... tis a tough world!

  • Hey Chicago Shorty..we miss you man!!!!!!

Thanks for this! Steve was an Immense Talent!

  • Bobby Bare

  • @sheltie123 Really....? Bobby Bare

  • There used to be a great live performance video of Steve singing this song. I guess it had a copyright problem but I really miss that video.

  • There are a couple others here on youtube.

  • Watching this video make me miss Steve Goodman all over again.

  • This Is Fabulous!!!!!

    Thanks!

    Jack

  • Perfect Country & Western song?
