My moment of life so far in my 30 year old Swedish life is the moment I visited Yankee Stadium last year and witnessed Rivera enter and closed a game. Pure happiness!
@hskshag00 yeah those are the special flag hats. you can see girardi hat at 2:10 has the NY with the stars and stripes. i think they used them on the 4th of july, but i could be wrong I dont live in NY
Technically, #42 is already retired by the MLB in honour of Jackie Robinson, but because Rivera was still wearing the number at the time of retirement, he is allowed to keep it. But yeah, the Yanks would certainly honour him too.
nothing like being in yankee stadium and its the bottom of the 9th and enter sandman comes throw the speakers and the greatest of all time enters.. goosebumps everytime
@Tucayo10 It was for Steinbrenner and Bob Sheppard (the voice of Yankees Stadium). They died 2 days apart July 13th and 11th respectively. :o( Bob Sheppard was the Yankees' Public Announcer since the 1950s. Derek Jeter actually asked Bob to tape his voice when he came to bat (years earlier). When you see Jeter bat, you will hear "now batting....Derek Jeter...#2....Derek Jeter...." You will be missed, Bob! You too Steinbrenner!
@Pokerstarsvevo Not really, I'm a Met fan and I say Mo is by far the best. I don't even think Hoffman was as good as Fingers, Gossage, Eckersley, Sutter, or Wagner.
Congrats to Mo for 602. Closers are a relatively new type of player in baseball, a little bit like the DH. It's a little easier to excel at closer and get "Saves" than win games as DH. Baseball purists and of course old-timers think you should pitch nine innings, but that doesn't sell as many tickets. Closers are here to stay and complete games are becoming much much more rare.
Im a die hard Red Sox fan, and god damn man this is a great video, i hate the yanks but i have nothing but respect for them, and rivera especially. Great vid man
@bronxbomber0042 most likely a slider, he used to throw one but he dropped it once he injured his UCL, but the main reason he dropped it from his repertoire was because he learned his devastating cutter
Wonderful video. I hope that all those that doubt him watch this video and understand why Mo is the greatest. Yes you have your Papelbon's or Bell's but they can't compare to number 42, the great Mariano Rivera. and with 30 saves @ the age of 41 and coming close to breaking the all time saves record.. Yeah his showing his age.
this is for all you loser boston fans , you'll never going to be like us the YANKEES FAN.gogogogogogogogogogogogogogogogogo YANKEES....... boston sucks
@apo18llo Rivera didn't lose that game PITCHING! He induced a ground ball to himself that should have been a tailor-made double play, but he ended up throwing it into centerfield (essentially a fielding error caused the crisis.). Instead of 2 outs and no one on the D-Backs had 2 on and no outs....and thus began the "carnage"-lol. Props to the D-Backs for coming through.
Not chances in hell will anyone will be ever as good this guy. Rivera is like the Hulk Hogan of relief of pitching. No matter how many times people keep saying he's done he just keeps hulking up.
I was at that game at 1:48, the loudest I ever heard a crowd get at a game.Only Mariano can get out of a jam like he did that day. He is the best pitcher ever, bar none. And Metallica is fucking amazing.
@evcYankees Are you DUMB? LOL!! The Yankees ACQUIRED the AL SAVE leader by the name of Rafael Soriano (45 Saves) who CHOSE to be Rivera's set-up man (7th inning man)--LMAO!! Way to be up-to-date evcYankees
@pjvogmis1 thanks i already know that. its a big adjustment to go from a one inning man to a different one. it would be a waste with hoffman and rivera. and way to be mature (are you DUMB? LMAO way to be up to date)
@evcYankees I apologize if my comment was curt, but it clearly addressed you comment. Why would a team have 2 closers? One closer wishes to join a winning team and is willing to be a team player for a championship. Flash Gordon did so several years ago. Re-reading my comment now it came off as snooty, jerky. I didn't mean it to. Cheers and keep cheering for the Yanks! Jay
@summerease Rivera is just plain respectful. He gets a save and then just goes to shake his catcher's hand. Act like you have been there before....he has....he's an Oscar winner.
Comparing Papelbon to Rivera should never happen.....Rivera is FAR superior
