keep making good videos! good luck! :)

  • What i´d like to know from someone who is Japanese or very familiar with Japanese culture: Why is the explicit or implied depiction of incest or pedophilia in mainstream media like anime culturally accepted in Japan?

I don´t mean to be rude, but in Europe or USA you might go into jail for just watching that kind of stuff and i see it in a lot of anime, games and manga that are meant to be played by children/teenagers, like RPG´s for Nintendo´s Wii whose audience is obviously a younger one.

  • Well based on facts, Hamburgers are the most selling food products in the USA. And we stand as the most obese country, and as of march 10, 2011, the most obese state is West Virginia. So, I don't think they're being "racist" much, but more of "stereotypical" that "all" Americans are like that. Statistically, "MOST" are.

  • This is so funny:-)

  • When talking about other countries, Japanese people may use the stereotypical images … as a kind of joke. It is like that some people in other countries.

I may think it's even delightful to have a jokes with each other.

But certainly, thereby may be hurt someone's feelings.

In most cases, doing so without malice, we can not quit easily.

  • Good video! I like the topics like this.

  • This is a great idea.

  • But the most important question: what beer was it?

I've got a Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale in front of me as I type this. I'm a bit of a beer connoisseur (aka "snob") myself.

And I've never yet set foot out of the US in my entire 32 years of life, and I have the image of the average US citizen of being a fat over-eater of meat and junkfood. D'oh?

This is a great idea, by the way!! There are quite a few common misconceptions about and in various countries that should be addressed.

  • It's rather that racism uses stereotypes but stereotypes are not racism in itself. For example, it's not racist call someone a douche or a geek because of their looks.

Anyhow great idea for videos, we rarely see those kinds aimed for Japanese like that.

  • @Ido013 You're right about that, but what I said is "What you call "image" Japanese, we call stereotype." And the Japanese subtitles specify that it's "image" as applied to 人種: race.

  • @bobbyjudo oh I see, wasn't clear the way I read it :P Still keep at it very promising~

  • Hey BobbyJ, I've been watching for your videos for a bit and I like your stuff, but I have to say I probably enjoyed this one the best. Awesome idea dude. Viewer

  • "One Beer with Bobby"

  • Im american and its really interesting hearing about what Japanese people think of americans! the sad thing is...i just ate a McDonalds mcsausage sandwiche for breakfast so i laughed a little when he was saying that Japan thinks americans eat hamburgers everyday! XD

  • great concept: it's even interesting for english speakers or americans to know what foreigners in japan ask about us. oh, and you do a good job explaining i think.

  • pedal the pre-Meiji Japan....

Though getting lost in the many aspects of any culture is easy, Japanese culture seems to be particularly easy to get lost in, i think, because it is still in a transition from before the Meji Era, to the Meiji Era, and after WWII. Yah...crazy.

But, this is coming from a 16-year old who reads too much, and who is admittedly confused.

Does that support or oppose my argument? Lol

On a more pertinent note, I loved the video!

  • I think it's easy for Americans to have mislead views about Japan. As I see it, Japan sends mixed messages about its culture, some of which seem to be unintentional. For example, a majority of anime conveys a Japan that is far from reality. Of course, anime isn't made for westerners, but they consume it regardless. Then, there's economic power-house side of Japan. And, then you've got the Japan that was created by purporters of post-war propaganda, such as Edwin O. Reischauer, who used to----

  • I am a Japanese who always studies English from textbooks or reading web page. Therefore I can read news article relatively and can hear news English to some extent if treating issue is familiar to me. But I feel frustrated when I try to hear V-bog in native English speaker talking about his/her casual daily life because I can hardly understand any bit of spoken word. Would you please teach me how to get over this?

  • YOU'VE GOT NEW FAN!!!!

  • This was really interesting. Please make more of these when you get the chance.

  • I like this new style of video. I don't know if it exists elsewhere on youtube, but to me it's original. Good job Bobby!

  • Very good concept also, really like the idea of how the video actually feels like talking with your over a beer :)

  • I think that this open dialogue is a very good idea. Good video!

  • that is really a great idea!! Really aweome! Looking foreward to the next episode!!

  • That's really cool! What a great idea!

  • Ew. Beer.

  • thanks for subtitles xixi

  • Keep 'em coming! awesome video!

  • I like this. I like to see what other cultures think about.

  • Interesting new series! Looking forward to more.

  • lol I've always noticed this, it's always USA vs Japan, but what abot Canada lol?

What do people in Japan think about Canad/Canadians? Do they all think of us as mapple syrup and cold weather lol xD

  • @xxgazegirlxx

If I think of ginger ale in Canada, and Calgary Winter Olympics '88.

  • Awesome idea for a segment on Youtube :) You can carry it out well too because you know the language very well. I like the idea of you bridging English and Japanese cultural perceptions by answering questions of Japanese people because it brings people/cultures closer to understanding one another.

  • Wasn't Tom Cruise the last Samurai?... Yeah, yeah... Bad joke I know... But I'm Spanish so I have my excuse ;)

Thanks for the chat Bobby. Cannot wait to see more of your cooking creations. [^_^]

  • Have you watched Ninzya warrior?

  • I live in Alabama. Those bodily functions are not even spoken of in my family. We don't even think it's funny to joke about it. It's very rude and just plain disgusting to us.

I learned that the Samarai became a thing of the past about 100 years ago. Is that correct?

Great idea btw. I'm looking forward to more of this series. Your videos are always great.

  • I'm form Europe, so I have no idea how are things like in both Japan and America... That's why I have a question concerning both: is the life there similar to the one in the mangas and the american comics? We're talking about the ones concerning real life, nothing Sci-Fi or fantasy... Thanks! ^__^

    Thank you very much!

  • Haha, its hilarious that you are talking about farting and burping with a straight face :D

  • got to agree you gots some balls to do this in public....its almost like you just coming up with these things as you talk....ne ways great job Jude!

  • good vid :)

  • Nice video. I'm always envious of your Japanese :) Do you note/write what you want to say first or do you say it all in the spare of the moment?

  • Great idea for a series of videos, particularly because it means you get to go somewhere and drink. GENIUS.

It might be a good idea to include "1Bw/B" into the title, though, so people can easily distinguish these bits from everything else when you get a few more.

  • QUESTION: In your experience or by inquiry by age group, just how intolerable are Gaikokujin to the Japanese people? I guess I am kinda hung up on this issue. Thats one of the major things busting my bubble right now is this kind of treatment towards foreigners. I wouldnt mind being treated as a novelty or even an oddity but to not be given a chance and just outright being shunned just for being different would just hurt too much... **snif, sniff** Bwaaaahaahah!!!! But no really.

  • @edtomorrow This is one of the things I am struggling with in my plans to get to Japan. I just don't know if I could deal with the whole 'we accept you because our culture is one of acceptance, but deep down I don't have much respect for you' sort of vibe.

Bobby Judo pleeeeeeeeeease answer edtomorrow's question~!

  • @edtomorrow As WarmothStrat pointed out, a lot of that has to do with not wanting to deal with people who don't speak the language. He claims he can walk into a "Japanese Only" bar and they don't mind once they figure out he speaks Japanese. He's been there for 20 years, so he knows whereof he speaks.

  • @LordBalto Oh I totally agree that speaking Japanese is a huge step in making life there easier. LIke %90 of the battle. I think people know this that r serious in assimilating into any culture. I'd like to think that any effort in doing so would be met with atleast begrudging approval. There will always be the unyielding and those that would be overly accommodating and genuinely interested in being your true friend. I guess its these people that your energies and efforts should be invested in

  • Stereotypes are rude to make but allas they are true about 70% of the time. There are ignorant people out there in the world and not just in Amerika. Lets face it some people should not be allowed to leave the house. Unfortunately the ones that sneak out are always the worst ambassadors for any country. Its going to happen and to each their own. Americans get the dumb oaf label everwhere we go but if a group of Japanese people were to eat as they do in the US they would get stares too.

  • @edtomorrow Slurping, blowing your nose out onto the street, peeing in public, passing out in public, drinking from the soup bowl, openly reading dirty manga at a combini, not allowing a woman or the elderly to have your seat on public transportation....All things that would get you harsh stares if not outright arrested in the US, But heaven forbid you should stab your chopsticks into your rice or use them to bring something closer to you. Details... Thats what makes the world a great place.

  • CERCL

  • Ahhh, very good.. You are undoubtedly doing someone a great service by making these... TheJapanChanneldotcom just had a video about interpersonal edicate amongst nihonjintachi and I posed the idea that American humor and sarcasm is mostly lost on Japan. So crude body function humor would be lost here too. Americans love a good fart joke! Males mostly but I suspect the ladies get a kick out of it from time to time. Its all about location if its rude or not. Public flatulence is always bad. UmmK.

  • Hmm, your fluency is impressive, and inspires me to keep studying my Nihongo. It's great to hear gaijin speaking so colloquially.

I daresay many have asked you many times (and thus you are bored brainless with the question), but at what age did you start learning JPZ? And how long have you lived there? Thanks so much!

  • Ninjas are EVERYWHERE!! hehe

    Great video.. pretty interesting. =D

Here's a Question for you: What kind of snacks or foods do you eat with your beer?

  • well spoken..you should be a news anchor..lol..so poised and articulate!

  • @heomak Hahaha!!! Even after drinking... Must have been his first beer... It would be funny to see how these would turn out after say... ? 5 beers? LOL!!!!

  • Hahha the first question! I'm a girl and one of my girl friends likes to say "sorry" when we smell something funny. It cracks everyone up.

  • Those were really good answers, I think : D I hope you get a lot of interesting questions. I'm always curious about what others think of "Westerners"

  • but ninja is a popular word among my friends lol

  • I think you did a really good job of answering the questions, especially the one on Americans opinion of what Japan is. I look forward to further segments in your 'One Beer' series. ^^

  • living in Canada, I remember once being near New York in a small city named Carmel, and being asked by a person how I managed to cut snow in perfect square blocks in order to make my igloo!! So it would not surprise me if some people, not necessarily just Americans, would think that Japan is still run by Samurai and Ninjas!

  • Good work! I hope you keep this up, but isn't it weird to record these monologues in a public space? I could never do it myself, so thumbs up and a +fave for you. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this, in the future. :)

  • Yeah...Stereotypes sure are racist

At least they dont call you gayreeks

The call Greeks gay but the truth is that Greeks is racist towards gay people

(Not that this is a good thing)

  • ahhhh I want a beer now =.= and Im trying to go on a diet~!!!!! T.T thanks alot Bobby ;~; .. XD anyways I like this segment. It will help try and clear the air between the two cultures.. :D

  • I love you man

  • i like this ^_^

  • nice work with your new segment i enjoyed it ^^ keep up the good work kampie and ganbatte XD !!!

  • Some stereotypes are fun to joke around with though! xD

  • @i8thefood yea .. he's right though lol there's alot of ignorant people

  • Thanks for the good answers.
