If this were a foreign language film, it would have been nominated for an Oscar in that category. Now, it's just another independent (low budget) movie, like there are so many. They are of no importance to Hollywood. The best such a film can do, and I believe it did, is attract a lot of attention at better festivals such as Sundance. What is criminal, imho, is that this BRITISH movie with some fine BRITISH actors is only nominated for one BAFTA award. Yep, only one.

Utterly fantastic, heartbreaking and honest film. Filmed on a 750 grand budget. It's almost like a homage to the BBC "Play for Todays" from the brutal 1970's when the likes of Ken Loach and Alan Clarke reigned supreme...I think it's Paddy's defining moment. He could move on from this as a director and really raise his game because it just comes over as un-patronsing honest british film making.
I'm still going to see this. I agree that there's enough material in the book for two movies, but I was worried that most of the cool action sequences (other than the chase at the beginning) would be in the (sigh) second half. I watched this last night - simply put: utterly amazing. I swear to god throughout most of it I had my hand on my face and constantly fidgeting with nervousness. Just... wow. Beautifully tragic. AMAZING ACTING. Hands down brilliant.

Or when you watched Funny Games thinking it would be a kind of theatrical version of It's A Knockout? Utterly fantastic, heartbreaking and honest film. Filmed on a 750 grand budget. It's almost like a homage to the BBC "Play for Todays" from the brutal 1970's when the likes of Ken Loach and Alan Clarke reigned supreme...I think it's Paddy's defining moment. He could move on from this as a director and really raise his game because it just comes over as un-patronsing honest british film making.

I'm still going to see this. I agree that there's enough material in the book for two movies, but I was worried that most of the cool action sequences (other than the chase at the beginning) would be in the (sigh) second half. As an English teacher, I could not help but notice the writer's style as much as the substance, and as much as the author makes this movie come alive with her words, it is her eloquent writing that makes me want to believe she is as good a connoisseur of movies as she is of the English language.
