During the roast shows... Dean Martin wasn't actually drinking alcohol... it was usually apple juice... but it gave the appearance of drinking burbon (water for vodka, etc.). He played up the heavy drinking lush persona... helped draw in viewers that thought Dean was drunk on TV.

In all fairness, television was far different back then. There were only three networks and a hand full of independent stations, no cable or internet.

A show back then that had a rating of a number one show today would have been canceled long ago. If a show did not have a 40 or 50 share, it would be toast. Too many choices today and definitely not enough true unwatered down talent, that is for sure....
