Sounds a little bit like tradicional music from southern Europe. But with a very different, interesting and rich singing style. I loved how he slides through his vocal range with such great feeling. Good stuff.
Love it. Reminds me of the old Greek rembetica music when I use to weep over my ouzo and smash plates all night :) Occasionally I'de get up and stagger around in dance Zorba-like.
i have a very shallow perception when it comes to enka music before, because it is usually sung in japanese anime and films that usually depicts misery and being heartbroken. but now i came to understand and appreciate such songs
@sockondik12 yeah, friedman is a master. its incredible how he looked for other influences apart to the conventional ones (rock, metal, etc) and included them into his music and created his own style. \m/
listening to music like this is much more heartbreaking now b/c of what happened in japan (earthquake, etc). I sincerely hope such music can lift their spirits in this difficult hour
@KumoKojiki I agree!! But you forgot Samurai, architecture, traditional morals, food, alchohol, humor, game shows, porn (jks) art, aesthetics, clothing, weapons, martial arts... I could go on :D (wow I didn't realise how big the list was xD)
Japanese enka, Korean trot, Taiwanese oldies, traditional Spanish (Iberian guitar music), Argentinine tango, Greek laiko, French chansons, Mexican norteña, etc. OMG, they're all soooo good! <3
This is pretty good, i have a japanese pen pal that mentioned these so i thought i'd check them out. I'm usually into metal and rock but this guy has some serious talent
There's something very evocative and compelling about this genre. I always thought that the older, more traditional forms of music were more emotive, at least in the West (eg. classical, opera, etc). It seems this is also true of Japanese music. Perhaps all over the world! To me it raises questions about the future, but in the meantime, I've just discovered Enka.
It's a shame that Americans don't seem to have music like this.. Im American...half Mexican and half Japanese, So I've got Mariachi on one side, and Enka on the other..It's amazing when my family gets together for parties... once they get drunk, I've got uncles singing Vicente Fernandez on one side, and Enka on the other... They think it's a competition as to who can sing louder, lol... quite a sight..
The Enka music has several qualities that we can hardly find in pop music nowadays.
You will find all singers have voca power, timing, interpretation and of course, a nice voice. It is a tough competitive market and the public is very demanding.
I were in Japan in 83. staying there for 3 month. I've listen enka song while my stays n I like it very much. One song i've sang with japanese friends at karaoke is Sachiko. can anybody help me to find the song please.
whoever uploadind the enka song in karaoke version, hope the clips comes with Romaji.
What are enka ballads? Can some one who knows what they are talking about write to me a few sentences about what defines the style of Japanese music called enka ballads? If you did I'd be very grateful, thank you.
I been researching this for a presentation i have to do tomorrow, from what i've got its basically a traditional style of sentimental song, emotional lyrics etc. written to the japanese scale, rather than a western scale, that's why the vocal patterns are a bit different, creates that oriental sound, and generally uses traditional instruments rather than western ones. Jap music shops apparently still divide between J-pop and enka but there's a lot of crossover acts nowdays.
Hai.. Im from M'sia, i love this song and singer too. Its very dramatic eventhough i didn't know what was he sang. But i believe its a sad song, isn't it? ;b Best performer, good pitching and awesome control vibration.
Listening to Japanese and Korean folk music is so soothing and nostalgic for me. Funny thing is when I was a kid I hated it but I really appreciate it now. Maybe it was because when they used saxophone and weird techno sounds; it really clashes with the music. Lol I think that was because of the 80, 90's influence.
I really love this music and used to watch the program faithfully on NHK on Friday evenings. The performers seem to put their whole hearts into their music.
This is what it says in the book called "Race, Ethnicity and Migration in Modern Japan" by Michael Weiner: It would not be an exaggeration to say that Misora personified what was authentically japanese. But She, too, was of korean descent, as was her husband, the singer-actor Kobayashi Akira
I have never said that President Obama was Korean! You need to gets some eye glasses. Miyavi said that he was of Korean descent and Ayumi Hamasaki said that her favorite food is kimchi.

As a matter of fact I have glasses and that has nothing to do with it! Try some travelling around the world, that'll open your eyes up not stuck in your little "Korean world"!!
Do I have to mention Miyavi? I dun' really care about Miyavi and I don't friggin' care if you think Ayumi Hamasaki is Korean or not. @s4jt a) Weeaboo is a made-up word; don't use quotations implying otherwise, especially to an English Major. b) If you'll notice, I never said that I particularly liked this song either, therefore rendering your "embracing anything Japanese" remark invalid. c) I love your insults that were obviously pulled straight from Urban Dictionary, and have absolutely no relevance to the situation at hand. You must be a smart person, indeed. You really are just a little faggot.
Congratulations on a joke major, either way I wasn't arguing that you will find the word in an English dictionary either.
