@benfiver the takes/clips were all meshed on the Vegas timeline.... some overlapped... some faded... if that addresses your "blending" q-- that's all we did. as to "layers" -- we shot in the HV30's native 24pf (not quite progressive) mode and captured right through Vegas. There are some interlacing artifacts in there but the YT codec masks them more than the orig file. Best hands-down capture/de-interlacing app is Cineform which we use now. THANKS!!!
Love to know what your settings were in MBLooks and Vegas. I have the hv30 and am planning to go with a Jag35 student bundle. I have Vegas 9 and will be getting the MB suite soon. Perhaps some tutorials on the settings part with MB&Vegas would really rock. The video is stunning. Thanks for all your help.
@jimdevo first off THANKS a bunch. re: MB Looks, the Q&A has been kicked around on this page tons over the past 2y. Start with a preset then play with your curves, crush, shoulder, etc. This vid was shot after white balancing with 'warm cards'... a corner I'm not sure i'd put myself in again.... THANKS AGAIN.
@lukether123 this vid done with Canon HV30, RedrockMicro 35mm lens adapter + lenses, sunlight & sony vegas.... oh yeah and lots of Amy Winehouse. THANKS!
Damn I just can't believe how this looks. Okay I'm convinced I should just save up for this kind of camera with the adapter vs, the Kodak pocket HD cam. Haha no comparison. Thanks for posting.
Haha! Hey we like that "fuzzy looking film look", thank you very much! But definitely forward any footage you want to hold up side by side... love to see it.
lol im pretty sure the xh a1 records on film. i love this look. although i really want the xh a1, it is a great camera. im going to put something of mine up pretty soon to one of indelibles vids see how i hold up lol
There is only room from improvement, very nice focus with DOF adapter, great shoots, the direction of photography is nice, music, editing and gossip match, very nice sex in the city short.
My question is, how much does your right cost, in estimate. The red rock plus the lenses, without including the camera in the estimate. I ask because I can clearly see in your video the quality that you can get with such tools. Unlike just buying the redrock and not knowing what's going on. (Our DP does knows these things, but if we ask him, then he will give us a wish list of items we could never afford, lol)
...(cont'd)... start off with a 50mm. that's your bread and butter. Then add an 85 - 105mm for tights, a 135-150mm (ish) for extremes... you'll also want at least one wide angle like a 20-35mm. Obvoiusly, speed (brightness) is a big factor--- keep it F2 or lower below 85mm and no slower than F3 for your longer lenses.
We are getting the HV30, we realize that it's a great price for the quality of the camera itself. However, our DP keeps insisting on lenses. Now, we know the importance of them, however the price is a factor. I've been to the redrock web page, and we know the price of the adapter. But that doesn't help us make an educated decision (like buying a toy without the batteries, if you will).
Your DP is right. Once you strap the HV30 to a lens adapter, the next consideration is lenses. If you've got a budget ($2,000 +), you can get into new glass. If you're working with $1000 or less, head over to Ebay.
for 2000 bucks i would rather use that money to save up for a prosumer camera that is better in low light and some other situations. In fact the scarlet body from red is going to be 2500 bucks (just the body) and with a lens and a mount that would bring you up about another 800 to 1400 bucks. So wouldn't saving up for a scarlet be a better choice. I have the xl1 and have recently acquired the hv30. I am very happy with it and blows the xl1 out of the water in resolution. In low light not so much
THANKS. All good points. It all depends on what you're shooting. For us a) "filmlook" depth-of-field is a must so a one-lens Scarlet wouldn't do at any price (and that's if it ever gets here) b) a used M2 and 2-3 lenses are well below $2K. c) "low light" shooting never happens on set.... THANKS AGAIN!
yeah life's like that. I think the letus is a FINE product. Whenever I see Letus rigs, one side of me wonders... but For me, Redrock whole line of gear drips with quality. this stuff is solid, but not so proprietary that a decent tech can't make each piece his/her own. Judging by their user base, there's clearly hundreds of thousands of hours of combined filmmaking ups/downs in each piece of their gear. Either way, you win though. You just have to use the stuff to get it sometimes.
thanks a bunch. the hv30 is an amazing cam... put with the Redrock adapter, it comes close to insane output-wise. used MagicBullet in post--- a bit overheated (color) in some areas, but--- moving on!
what are you talking about 24mm yuk? That's the best freakin one. It looks like the early 80s!!!

yep casualty of "warm" balancing on site. Reds over-popped when we pushed curves in post but no harm no foul though... THANKS!

Much of a film look is having a narrow depth of field, getting that is a lens job, difficult to simulate in post..

...(last), so call it $2K for HV30 + Redrock HD Kit, pus $1000 for 4-used lenses (ebay) or $2-3K for new glass. Keep in Touch!

is that type of depth of field all in camera or is it the work of another lens and adapter?
RockdaSG 2 years ago
is this shot in just 24p or did you also you "cinema" mode, or whatever its called?
waddaine 2 years ago
24p = YES. On the HV30, the "cinema" setting IS 24p. From there you have options on shutter speed and exposure (f-stop). Thanks a lot.
