  • Only you can prevent mirror fires. >.>

  • Where do you buy the mirrors?

  • we have seen many times that you are burning a wooden bar by your mirror. but you are not showing us the way you have made it. would you like to or it is a trade secret? please inform honestly.

  • i need about 3 of these...

  • It looks dangerous, if directed in the wrong way.

How do you fix it , for instance, to make a boiler without any dangers?

  • Anytime you heat anything there are cautions that need to be considered. For a boiler, pressure release valve is a must an properly mounting a system in a safe area away from kids, pets and structures is needed.

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE hahah just found you on ebay sellin mirrors, thats awesome

  • @ZippyCalzeLunghe Plus anything outside of the focal point will not be harmed, for instance if your house was 10 feet away and the focal point is 18 inches, your house will not be burnt.

  • intersting ... very intersting ..

    i am with treborly ..

how do you make the mirror surface?

  • I would assume the parabolic surface is created by grinding as you would any mirror blank for a telescope objective. Additionally the reflective coating is probably by the standard process use with telescopic mirrors.

  • Where is the video where you explain how to make it?, i cant find it.

how do you make the mirror surface?

  • Can some one please tell me what the reflective material that is used to line the dish? i would love to know..........let me know

  • I just checked and you can buy spray on Chrome at auto parts stores here in the USA. That to me seems like a economical alternative. Now I have a project for that old sat dish on my porch that just sits there. I bet this would even work on old farm disks!

  • You can get spray on chrome anywhere. It is only 35% reflective. That means you would need a 4.5' dish to equal this 25" one.

There is a true mirror spray that costs 100 bucks for all 3 cans. covers 5 sq ft.

  • For an optical instrument I would highly recommend having the mirror professionally coated.

  • I wonder how something like that would work as a telescope primary mirror.

  • That is a great question. I will be testing it soon. I am sure it will not be a perfect image.... will see. Any telescope concept ideas on how to build from this would be appreciated. I have some leads but input is WELCOME.

    Thank you for the comment:-)

  • if it is optical quality it would make an awesome primary mirror for a telescope, the problem is getting the mirror quality down to optical quality, there used to be a cardiac surgeon in Boston who built his own 36" telescope, built his own observatory (himself, he poured the cement for the foundation and everything) and he had some of the best stellar photo's of any amateur, back in the 90's.

  • I was wondering the same thing.

  • can you also let as see how it is made.

  • very nice

  • I just found the other day a second dish tv 20x22 inch got to get that one mirrored covered also!!!!

  • I have made a video clip of a 18x20 inch satellite dish mylar covered cooking a burger in a square 4 inch cast iron pan suspended from a metal grid I made and then from the side attached to a tripod to adjust focal point. the small pan is perfect for the job. I place the dish on the ground and angle it proped up to the pan. Anyway, I have to do another burger again and in different format on digital camera or it wont upload. I have a video on my channel. using a fresnel lens cooking a burger now

  • I have a direct TV dish that I lined with mylar space blanket and it makes bottles of tea real quick. Quart bottles and one tea bag is perfect. the steel tube that hold the dohicky to get the signal is gone and that tube it a good mount to place the bottle on a wire holder.

  • this is incredible..much better than solar panel.

  • How do you do it?

  • You find the coolest stuff.

  • I'm a serious coffee drinker. Often thought be better if I boiled water with a parabolic and stored it in a thermo instead of wasting all that electricity. Looking forward to your video's with the parabolic.

  • Coffee works great, you can actually use a clear container and the sun heats the grounds vs the container. The water is then heated by the dark coffee grounds. This releases additional flavor that is impossible to get any other way. As the liquid darkens the grounds get less sun so it does not over do the flavor.I have an herbal tea video I am working on, same rules apply. This dish does 12 oz in 2 minutes to a full boil. A large Fresnel lens in our other video does 32 oz. in two minutes.

  • Nice,

If you sandwiched two together, cut a 2 " hole in one, would you get that thing at the Discovery Store. Hologram?

  • I wonder, now you got me curious.

  • Mirage?

  • Can that be arrayed?

  • Yes, but only a few, the focal length is 18"

  • Dude, that is a snazzy mirror. I tried to buy a glass one 22" a year ago on the Ebay and it sold for over$300. to rich for me. BACHLOME

  • Bausch & Lomb

  • I think I watched that auction. Nothing until the las minute then baamm!

  • Dan great videos. I just got my first Fresnel lens and have been having a fun time with it. However I am running out of ideas to use with it. If you have any suggestions post them for us. I am thinking that with that much power/energy you can get from the sun and the way the economy is going everyone needs to get one even if to just cook with it in hard times. I also adapted a small Fresnel lens to a solar oven it works awesome. Also what is better a parabolic mirror or Fresnel lens? thanks

  • Hi,

Before I found these mirrors, the Fresnel Lens because higher quality mirror optics were too expensive. This is Equal to a 24" x 24" Clear Spot Fresnel Lens. The only drawback to the mirrors is that your target obscures some of the incoming light and lessens the power depending upon target size. You can compensate by angling the mirror but the beam gets distorted. Still very strong. Mirrors are easier to track the sun with. Power wise they are almost the same pound for pound. Thank you:-)

  • Much better than your silent film. Will this work better than cooking. I want a take it with you type sun stove. I have an oven I got off of the net but it is slow. Need a burner type like that.

  • Opps Will this work for cooking? Ignore the second line in my previous comment.

  • Hi,

Yes this works good, it can either be center hole drilled and mounted to a camera tripod or placed in a mount like a papasan chair. Still working out the details for the mounting. Because this is a slightly flexible material, tilting it like in this video slightly distorts the beam, still works amazing. A smaller pan is needed as with all parabolic shapes when bottom cooking, the pan will block a bit of the light entering the mirror. Thank you for the comment.
