  • futuristic ideas! robotics rules!

  • Top comment is a perfect example of all CS student Language arts grades.

  • great video. cant wait to see what my future holds being a CS Major

  • Im currently shifted from Architecture to Computer Science....And I think CS is timeless

  • WTF was that?

  • So the skate board kid just owns the toy, the hot model chick is the engineer?

  • Hey everybody, I would love to learn how to program and write software, can anybody provide useful URL'S thanks :D

  • @thevulgurvlogger

Unless you are part genius...you will need to go to college to learn how to program effectively.

  • 1:24

I was shocked to find that, instead of opening that door, grabbing that bot, and running (or skating like crazy) to that Microsoft building as quickly as humanly possible to get it fixed quickly, he just stood there with his girlfriend with his mouth open.

  • that robot must have also required an electrical engineer

  • This looks more like computer engineering than computer science. A career in computer science involves sitting in a cubicle writing code for 8-10 hours a day.

  • can i become a video game designer with this major?

  • @west93 Yes, but I suggest that you actually major in video game design, rather than in computer science with a concentration in video gaming.

  • @MuhammadVonRaven ok and what about Cybercrimes?

  • @west93 - Ah, excellent. That's most closely related to what I'm doing. What you want to do then is go into InfoSec (information security). When you're talking cybercrimes, you're talking computer forensics. This is something you'll most likely to learn on the job, working for some law enforcement agency.

These days, though, more and more InfoSec pros are expected to be able to code. So, what I did (and am doing) was an undergrad in CS and grad school in InfoSec.

  • and what exactly was this video supposed to mean?

  • What a weird-ass pipe dream. "Robot repair with XML...it's the future!"

  • "I hate glass"

  • wtf was that!!? i want my 2min of my life back

  • me too

  • what, this video is pretty sweet, i like it

  • but it shouldnt be in my comp sci notes lol

  • guys when i tell some one im studying CS in unvirstay they say can u plz fix my mouse .. WHAT THE FUCK ?

  • lol..

  • @randoxxxxx yeah once i went to a friends home and her mother asked me too fix the computer and i just looked into it like an expert for the fear of not looking stupid....

  • @randoxxxxx Learn how to type and spell and then maybe I'll take what you said into consideration when I'm thinking about the ignorance of such people....

  • Can som1 plz help me? currently im doing ICT in college... I want to do either computing or CS in uni... If ihave no experience in prgramming would it be ok? As some uni's i spoke 2 said ... we teach everything fm screatch so no experience is required??

  • I am studying at Purdue atm and they taught everything from scratch. You should be fine without any prior experience. Don't worry too much about programming skill, it's not that hard to learn the basics, and you only get really good with practice. The hard part of CS is algorithm development, but you will be fine as long as you are a good problem solver.

  • hey thanks a mill mate u really helped me get more confident about not needding 2 know tht much fm the start.,.,,,

Wht about this CE and CS thing??do u think cs is dying out??

  • Well, as long as people need new software people will need CS. At some point the hardware engineers will reach the physical limits of technology and people who understand efficient algorithms will be all the more necissary to continue to squeeze more performance out of PCs. So I don't think CS has any expiration date. A CS grad is more than just a programmer. A CS grad is an extremely efficient programmer who can problem solve using computers in any domain you set him in. Never useless.

  • Well described m8. I completely agree with u... U have been a grate help 4 me and helped me get rid of small confusions I had.

Thanks once again and will contact u again in the future if I'm uncertain about anything:)

  • @glgamecoder im about to go into iupui next fall.......... im in my senior year now and have no IDEA how to programm. maybe some simple formulas in excel but thats it you kno?! do u think i should study? and if so wer? like to get a head start.

  • at iupui your first class will be taught in java and will cover how to program along with the basic knowledge like binary representation, assembly code, and logic gates. They ease you in very slowly, you won't need to study ahead but it never hurts. I would suggest learning a high-level language like java or c# to get a head start. Find an online tutorial and teach yourself, a CS students best asset is knowing how to teach themselves. If you can, get Andy Harris for CS230 instructor, he's great.

  • @glgamecoder

nah, learning java or c# as first programming language is just ridiculously hard as they are object oriented. I would suggest first to learn plain C, as the imperative programming paradigm is easier to grasp for a beginner in my opinion, and it also helps if you want to learn object orientation later.

  • @Heavenhammer99 C# is easier to learn than C, I can garanteee that. I personally don tlike Java because of its lack of things that I have gotten used to like passing by reference/pointers and stuff. Really spoils it for me.

  • @calfan3 I think you should start learning programming.

Find out what programming language your course is using, if you dont know, then a good starting language is python or Visual Basic. Anything that teaches the concepts of programming.

Anyway, try to aim for a language like C, C++ or Java.

  • @calfan3

thenewboston has the best programming tutorials on youtube by far!

search for his videos he is great gl

  • LOL at 1:25

    "I hate glass."

  • that thing would cost something close to a brand new car, by the time our robots are that high tech the financial situation would be dramatically altered, this kid would blow his head off in shame

  • don't know wether to pick computer science or engineering at university

    choice is hard

  • Engineering is going to be usless soon, Computer science is the future.

  • what jobs can a person with a degree in computer science do ?

  • If that person happens to be American, nothing.

  • man i love u !

but tell me more lol plzz im studing CS in unvirstay ! but all tell me u should take CE cuz CS is going to expire ! :(

  • computer engineer can get about any job a computer scientist can, but not the other way around... go CE

  • guess ill do CE then :D good point lol

  • sure, but generally they dont get the software design principles that cs majors do and may not work as well on a large team. Second its hella harder that cs, so hopefully you have plans to use the hardware knowledge or you are putting in alot more effort than you have to to have access to the same software jobs. If your intent is to work in software, CS is better simply because you have the extra time to learn solid coding practices, and you can get deep knowledge in areas like networking/db's.

  • At my school, UW Seattle, the CSE department offers three degrees:

    CS

    CE - Software

    CE - Hardware

And they are all nearly identical. The main difference is that CS has a lot more electives. I'm pretty sure CS doesn't have -any- required course that isn't also required for CE, but CE has many required courses that aren't required for CS.

Personally, I'm CE just because I want to do patent law and the CE degree comes with more bragging rights (which is important for law firms)

  • i have the hardest choice to pick for university computer science or biololgy.

  • Why not both? Request a double major or minor in one. Specialization to the exclusion of other interests is a tragedy.

  • I think that Computer Science is a great matter where you could external

your creative and you can do it real because almost all you need basically

is an powerful and cheap machine called PC and with this machine you could

change the life of the people increasing profits and benefits.

  • wat does this have to do with comp sci?

  • awesome not a bad idea of a new concept.

  • There are 10 kinds of people in the world , People that know binary and People that dont.

  • that's intelligent!

you know binary numbers very well :)

  • HAHAHAHHAHAAAAA....what an awsome type of thinking u have

  • come up with something new... like using the binary representation for each letter you speak...

the quote you used is overused!

  • That even old, and why would i waste my time writeing down Zeros and ones. If its so over used, tell me what the statement means

  • u didnt have ur backpack on wen u did the water gap ahah nice vid tho

  • that was html.

  • just because you find it hard and boring does NOT mean most other people do

  • blah...blah..blah.this is not related to computer science at all. i am getting my becholer degree in computer science and its not easy or even fun like u think it is. its hard, boring and requires patience "because u deal with a machine with no emotions, actions or feelings".whatever, i dont like it lol

  • If you don't like it then why would you even bother to pay for it?

  • i dont ...iam on a fully-paid scholarship.LOL...and yes i dont like it,but iam really good at it "u know" beside i have 2 years left ,so i cant quit righ now :)

  • Oh nice I hope I qualify for a full payed scholarship too!!! That would be so sweet...

  • yeah... iam sure it would :)

  • Exactly, love Computer science, Its something that keep forcing you to learn, because the industry is all ways changing. I also like the other stuff that we lean like, Philosophy and Advanced Math and such.

  • Maybe you should change your major than....I would be sure to stay away from English as well...

  • I once crashed into a glass window too. But I reprogram without conscious coding.

  • So the guy on the skateboard has fun and meet girls, while the Computer Scientist sits in her lab waiting for bug reports all day? :P

  • Hahahahaha! Great comment!

  • yea the guy on the skateboard was a drop out heh, the computer scientists was his sister! In the 20 years later video the guy on the skateboard has a shaved head and is in prison.

  • so skateboarders are not capable of being a computer scientist?

and skateboarders are destined to be in prison?

well i guess i should drop out of uc Berkeley and quit my computer science major because apparently skaters are drop outs and destined to be in prison.

i'm gonna go rob a bank and get in prison now bye everyone

  • I'm a bit confused,I've read the comments and people are like, if you want to do robotics, you should be an engineer and all that. Isn't computer science a part of engineering in a way?

I mean, sure, you can build the robot, but it needs to be programed, and programing is a sub field under computer science, so if you want to program robots/make them like really work, then get in to a programing field of sorts, which, from what I've seen and heard, computer science is.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • well actually..programming robots is very different from just programming and thats y computer engineering focus on it and deal with it where computer science just take it like an over view or something. but the concept is similar

  • I think computer science is limitless.

  • If you want to make stuff in the video, you'd be more interested in robotics engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering but not computer science. Computer science is software only. As much as I like computer science, that is the truth.

  • Yea, but without software this machine wouldn't work. There is truth in what you say. But computer science is not as much about computers as people think. Computers are just the medium that we use to express our art. That doesn't mean you're limited by your instruction, however. Some of the world's smartest and most recognized men and women were people that used their skill in ways others did not think of. Software is rapidly being found in everything these days. Don't neglect your creativity.

  • The video is deceptive, though. It is probably made for people that haven't studied it at all and don't yet know what computer science is. For these people, they are basically defining computer science as everything related to robots, hardware, user interfaces... As creative as you may be, there are other fields like engineering that are better suited to the people this work appeals to.

  • Indeed, computer science isn't really the way to go if robotics are more your thing. But I don't think robotics is the message of this demo. People get so caught up with procedure that they forget to try new innovative ideas. I think the point of this video isn't just about robotics, but the possibilities of computer science. That is 'The science of computers'. Not simply derivative via class room lectures or curriculum, but the avenue of innovation, research and development.

  • Josh you have a point, but this video is clearly trying to give the impression that computer science is more interesting than people may have originally thought. Sure, they don't build the robot from scratch, but they do play a key role in how it interacts with the environment. Engineers from all fields work closely together, so you may not have built the actual circuits, the body, or any materialistic part, however, you provided the code for it which is equally as important.

  • Maybe they could show that relationship between engineers and software developers more accurately by showing such a team in a robotics competition and ending with each member explaining what each contributed. Advertising a career in computer science like this video is like advertising a career in physics by showing a space ship getting sucked into a black hole with R&B music playing in the background.

  • Computer scientists also have spiky hair and drive flying cars. Get it right, MIcrosoft!

Believe it or not, comp sci is a lot more interesting than this video conveys. And a lot less like the movie "Hackers."

  • and a lot less related to robotics and engineering than a video about a guy getting followed by a flying robot conveys. It also has nothing to do with skateboarding.

  • Wow this is cool ^^

  • Nice video :)

  • wow. im in the right path..

  • but cool anyway :)

  • hahaha, embarrassing Micrsoft...

    the "possible" future... uhm yeeees...NOT

How exactly does that robot fly?

  • Who the fuck uses the term "sk8" like that. It's so ridiculous.

  • rofl.

  • @TBBucs u just used that term lol =]

  • I never did anything that cool when I was doing computer science at uni :( .. but in all seriousness it was a pretty sweet degree. After I graduated I got a job as a web developer pretty much straight away, it's a pretty sweet job and better than the shithole jobs I had before (petrol station worker, labourer, grocery store worker and a bunch of other shithole jobs)

  • what is your job like from day to day?

  • Pretty sweet. Come in, make myself some breakfast, sit down, eat, read my email, browse the net, check out what's going on in the world, both IT and non-IT related. When I have finished breakkie I check what needs to be done in the project list, do it while chatting on msn or checking out youtube videos, as long as I am meeting the deadlines it is smooth sailing, plus I have learnt a lot since I started working here, especially OO web design and using ORMs on top of a DBAL.

  • how did you get that. do you have any certifications in anything.

  • I got a degree in BCompSci (Computer Science), once I had my degree I sat around at home for a while still working part-time at one of the jobs I had during Uni (College if you're in the states). I had basic skills in PHP and MySQL (what I use now) and extensive knowledge in other languages and OO concepts. My mate then told me where he was working they needed another web developer, I applied, got the job and here I am 10 months later. :)

  • Also, you don't need a degree to get into developing. There are abt ~10 web developers where I work, and not all of them have bachelor degrees. You can also do a tafe course, or cert or whatever, that gives you those skills, then after that experience is what matters. The degree is pretty fun though, I programmed a miniature elevator, routing between mobile phones and heaps of other cool stuff.

  • I'm just replying to this so I get the email notification of a response x)

  • Haha, glad to know my response is so important. :D

  • wow!

  • What kind of jobs can you get with Computer Science? Like Job Titles. If anyone knows Please let me know!!!

  • Software Engineer, Systems Analyst Web Master, Graphic Designer, Programmer, Database Administrator, Game Programmer and like a million other things lol Im a Comp Sci Major

  • Software Engineer, Systems Analyst Web Master, Graphic Designer, Programmer, Database Administrator, Game Programmer and like a million other things lol Im a Comp Sci Major

  • Me too!

    Go video games!

  • im a computer tech major, what are your plans after school? i just thought i'd ask

  • If you want to be a graphic designer, study visual art. If you want to create computer hardware, study electrical engineering. Computer science basically studies how to make computer software. There are many job titles but they won't be very meaningful without familiarity with software development. What is a software engineer? What is a database administrator, network administrator, computer programmer, web programmer, or a software analyst? Employers can use flashy names to attract workers.

  • well done!

  • we dont get it bacause by the time all this things will come ,we'll be freakin old so that future is not for us obslly is next generations stuff

  • the future is not for anyone but the present is for all us, we are part of the future of the past. now with technology the future will definitely :) my two cents.

  • The software in that video already exists or can be easily implemented. The unsolved problems are with the lack of physical capabilities for the devices in that video. The robot is moving better than a fighter jet. Computer science grads won't make the depiction in the video a reality. Engineers will.

  • If you have an idea, refine it enough and if you are capable of implementing each detail of it, you can implement the whole solution. A lot of the things in sci fi are not yet possible because only a few little parts haven't been solved. Computer hardware is the main problem in the video. The graphical interfaces are more work of artists than computer science graduates.

  • cheesy

  • The future looks dull.

  • why do these big companies feel the need to condescend to the "youth" market and feed us stupid shit that they think we will find "cool"?

  • I have a CS degree and believe me, there are no such girls in there and you may be involved in that kind of high-tech stuff long after you graduate..

    Here is the truth: .../watch?v=70fbBcbyIOI

Moreover, there are lots of theory, endless nights of coding, homeworks, projects and other fun stuff... Do you still want it?

  • Has anyone actually done a degree in Computer Science? I actually graduate next month with one, and believe me its WAY more theory of computing than anything else...

This is like saying "Take a degree in Physics and learn how to time travel!" or "Take a degree in Biology and cure cancer!" lol

  • IainStanford| that was exactly what I was thinking. Microsoft did a good job getting PCs to the average people, but making them _study computer science is too much of it.

  • I love iCatDaddy's comment! Why limit ourselves to flying robotic companions? Why not integrate our PDAs into our clothing and/or headgear? Naturally, the solution to that question lies in the realm of electronic engineering, but like the sun and moon, there will always be computer scientists if there are electrical engineers. Software cannot exist without hardware.

  • Computer science turns sci-fi stuff into reality. Why carry a PDA in your pocket when you can have a pet that follows you around and does much more?

  • Because PDAs do not run into glass.

  • You're right, they get thrown into washing machines instead.

  • LOL!

  • hahahahahaa!!!!

  • lol what does this video have to do with computer science? It looks like a short scifi film.

  • iliketheocean explained what it has to do with Computer Science. Through it, among other areas, we're able to turn things like this into reality

  • nice video

  • cool video
