  • Sebolle: at least here they cost roughly $2500 with a single slanted 4x12" cab, give or take a hundred or so, but that range...which makes the price almost the same as it is today, maybe just a few hundred cheaper.

I remember because it was pretty much the same price for a car/motorcycle driving licence (and still is!), and a friend of mine was given a choice for his 18th birthday - his parents would either pay for his driving licence or buy him a half-stack Marshall. Got the card in his 40¨s.

  • I'm just curious, but I was wondering if anyone knew how much these cost in the 80's?

  • I don't think I like this amp but am having to borrow one...I just need the clean channel to be load but acually clean as I plan to use my pedals only, for my sound/tone. I will tell you how it goes tomorro.

  • I don't think the clean channel is hugely different from a plexi marshall in hardware sense - but it won't overdrive nearly as easily though and I wouldn't say it sounds even nearly just like a 2203. But very similar. The drive channel OD is achieved with diodes rather than just tubes, which in my book is only good, as I'd use a tube screamer or some other diode pedal in front of it anyway. I don't like pure tube distortion, it's too round and messy. But I love pure tube overdrive.

  • dont make fun of me so a JCM 800 is bassically a plexi with a master volume and pre amp distortion

  • @akaboo69 yep... basically

  • i do not have any idea !!! unexpected i think !!! my amp above has got his whole power from mastervolumeknob, preampsesivityknob only changes the sound and a little more bass...

  • My 2205 is missing the footswitch, and I'm too lazy to buy a replacement, so I haven't even heard my "normal" channel yet. But it cleans up pretty decently if you turn down the guitar volume.

  • I use to have the dual reverb combo years ago and it was one of the worst amps that I have ever owned. I always had to run some pedal in front of it to get it to distort. The old way of turning the master up is ridiculously loud. I have a peavey triple x I am happy with at the present time

  • have the same amp, also in white from 1983, but the combo version, it's pretty cool.

  • i have the jcm800 2210 1987 with the match cab 400watts rms loaded with g12h100 ...this is a monster past2

  • maybe the JVM is more versatile...definately has a better clean tone...and rocks aswell i think...every marshall rocks!!!best amps in the world

  • the jcm 800 it's not a CLEAN amp..it was made to rock :)

  • this is the clean channel

  • its funny cos wen he turns it up u can hear his voice trying to keep up with the volume

  • have the same amp also in white but in combo version, it sounds awesome, even the normal channel is cool if set right

  • Uz2Brockstar thats a sick setup. I run the same thing. impossible to get a clean out of that first channel of marshall, so i run to a fender bassman for my clean/slight OD

  • use your volume knob! it would have saved you alot of money before you got your bassman

  • i thought i put this on another vid. None the less I own a JCM 800 also and The bassman there is such a huge difference between a 6L6 run amp and a EL34 run amp, everyone that i have ever played with that owned a jcm couldnt get a clean out of it, or should i say a real clean, its perfect for slight breakup but as far as the bassman goes man it rocks, ive played along time and all i can say is fenders rock, well worth the money, now i have 3 channels ranging from super clean to super crunch.

  • I own the same head, I run the master on 4 and the vol on 6,w/ humbucker; on 9 w/ single coils. Hard to get a true clean sound from this head, I started splitting to a fender twin for my cleans. Try both knobs on 6 for LOUD clean volume with celestion 75's and have the earplugs handy!

  • It won't go louder if the speakers have peaked which is the case here. You need a better cabinet sorry to say. Get some celestion 75t speakers and turn it up all you want, I have them and they pretty much handle my 150 watt Mesa.

  • yup, better cabinet, and the master will add as much volume to shake the entire house. I used to play with this real crappy cab, and when I turned the volume up, there was only bass coming out. When I got my 1960 marshall cab with 75 watt celestion speakers, it was like magic lol

  • Clean channel controls. I only ever used those, really...better than the drive channel.

  • the 3 knobs on the far right?

    what are they for?

i notice that only the 2203 model has the original 6 eq knobs

    just curious

  • its a 2210/2205 check the marshall website then products> heritage/jcm800> next page.

  • Thanks! And you too!

  • deeaa...merry Christmas...!

  • found a Ceriatone 18w on ebay as we speak!!thanks for your advice!!alohAAA from Hawaii...big island!!

  • ok.thanks much00..i did a search and found a Ceratone home page..but it looked like all thet sell are kits to change existing amps..is that right...do they make a amp to like yours...?i think i saw a CEreatone on ebay awhile back..ebay search in progress!!lol

keep rocking in the freeEE worlDD!!

  • Most 800's don't even do 'low volume', mostly due to crackling pots that make it impossible to find a spot the volume isn't nigh lethal but there is some sound anyway :-) also no 100W tube amp is gonna sound too good @ very low volume. That's one reason I love my 18W; it pumps out similar volumes to the 800's when need be but you get a decent sound at under 100dB too. But even that 18W is WAY too loud for home use and way more I'd need live too.

  • back again!! howz iTT?

i notice you had the master volume on 2...id like to take a chance and try out an amp like this in a outdoor bar....is there a moderate crunch that low a volume?..your video is great.!!thanks...alohaaaa from hawaiIIiiiII!!

  • Yes! Tinyterrors are really cool basic rock amps! Need suitable speakers and they can really rock!

  • ever use a orange tiny terror..? 15 watts...lotsa youtubes of themm...cool...rockkkonNNN

  • 36watt CERIATONE HUH>????

    ill look on ebay!!!

    thanks again

  • deea...what do you think of DSL50 or DSL100?

    alohaaa!!

  • this guy is "The Professor of the JCM 800!!!!!

  • thank you for posting this. and thank you for not just cranking the preamp while keeping the master on 1 like everyone else. great classic tone.

  • ACTUALLYY!!!IM TRYING TO INVENT A COUNTRY WESTERN MUSIC that has a JCM800 in the MUSIC..i have a backup giRl singer/mics and 100 watt gallienKRUGER amp/2 small Marshall 12" cabSSS!!!JUST WQNT SOMEcrunnchHHH!!!i love MARSHALL distortioNNnn!!!!

  • Seems to me you like a plain, true sound that is not modern-driven but has a certain edge and lotsa character and tone? Unless you're looking for much more drive than what you have on the clip, I definitely suggest you try them 18W machines out, like the Marshall 1974x. Search for 'Marshall 18 Watt 1974X Combo' It also has a vibrato channel. I'd wager you'd really also like my 36W Ceriatone (a 18W copy), and with the right cab they are pretty damn loud too.

  • did you see my youtube?

    serch:"Pathos Texas" by Theodore Jankowski

im playing thru a Lead 12

considering my style of music..what Marshall would you suggest?...i do alot of gigs here...mostly outdoor...and bars too

    thanks

  • Yeah I've tried a Vintage Modern and it seemed like a nice amp. Probably closest to the old 800 series today.

  • you metioned a vintage modern??i think that a cool onE!!

if you have time look at marshallforumDOTcom...remove DOT

  • thanks a lot....a real LOT!!!!

i was almost going to buy a Mosfet!!o well back to ebay!!!

    aloha from HAWAII

  • The Mosfet is a completely different amp. I had one once, sold the head off for 50 bucks. I hated it, very piercing and glassy. Real tubes just can't be replaced. But the 4x10" cab was very nice.

I could just about play at reasonable volumes with the JCM, but when the sound was good (already at 2) it was still too loud for band practice. The other guitar, then with a 120W Line6 couldn't get himself hear over mine like at all.

  • ok ...i gEt it!!!

so..im looking at a Marshall Mosfet 3210...you can hear them on youtube...they supposedly sound alot like a JCM 800..but they are solid state..thanks!!!rock oN!!!

btw...can you turn your 2210 down low?

  • It's about as loud as they come! These 100W Marshall heads, 2203-2210 and such, they're all loud as hell...I don't think there are many amps around that would be capable of more volume.

  • is your 2210 in this youtube really loud...?...what i mean is could it be used in a bar...or small outside restaurant?...it doesnt sound that loud....no attenuator right...?

    thanks

    aloha from HAWAIIIIIIII!!

  • Never tried it but based on clips I've seen it seems like a proper tube amp I'm sure I could be quite happy playing. The guy with the 63 Strat for instance gets real nice tone. Guitar World demo at after 3 and 4 mins shows real nice possibilities. I've seldom tried a simple EL84 or EL34 amp I couldn't get to sound good.

The trouble with most any YouTube clip is that they always seem to use too much drive for OD sounds and too little for the cleans.

  • have you ever heard Peavey Windsor head?...it is all tube...el34s...you can yooutube it...kinda buzzy imo...what do you think?

    thanks

    aloha

  • I really haven't played one very much, although we do have one at the training facility. Clean channel I think is quite OK, like on the 2010 I only ever used the clean channel. But it's my experience that pretty much all Marshalls after the 800 series are just too buzzy and fuzzy; they rely on preamp gain only pretty much...I just think there is a big difference if an amp has SS components inside or not...if I put in an SS rectifier in my Ceriatone, that's enough to kill the sound.

  • DO YOU LIKE JCM 900S???

    THANKS for the answer!!

  • No, the 36RP...That's a hard one...you'd be amazed how loud 18W is really...it absolutely drowns my friend's 120W SS amp for instance.

The 18W is a different beast; try a 1974x Bluesbreaker floored and see how you like 'em. It needs to be floored&very hot pickups or an OD to get the Marshall sound, and it's still a different Marshall sound. Only a 2204 and its siblings sound like that ACDC type marshall bite. But I like the slightly rounder 18W sound better meself.

  • is your Ceratpne a JTM 45?...i do small bar gigs and need a Marshall that has a good Marshall sound at low volume...any suggestions?thanks

  • nice demo, but emgs /w marshalls : YUCK

  • I suppose it's a matter of taste...I find them the best. I've used EMG products for 15 years, first the booster circuits with passive pickups like in my LesPaul, but recent years the 85 and S pickups exclusively. Just sold off my JB and P-94 and swapped them to EMG's and I'm happy.

I find with EMG's you don't need any overdrives necessarily, but get a full, rich sound just as is. If I switch to passives, all I notice is like this cloth was put in front of the amp, it just gets muddy and dull.

  • ...But it's all a matter of preference. IMO EMG's absolutely rule with relatively low-gain all-tube amps, but conversely they suck big time with solid-state amps or very saturated amps; they get all too buzzy and cold. Or a least I never tried a pickup I like better than the 85. I don't like the 81 mind you; far too thin and aggressive.

  • i find it the other way round, the emgs sound muddy and lifeless and the passives sound rich and full. althought ive never used a emg through a marshall IRL, thats what i seem to hear.

  • Tastes vary, and I suppose they do sound quite different with different amps. I feel that since they have a rather flat range and they are very powerful, they squeeze the maximum out of all-tube amps. I don't even need to use the amps EQ knobs at all. If I plug into other type of amps, they however tend to sound 'artificial' somehow. But conversely, if I plug in, say a Seymour JB equipped guitar, I lose all definition and it's very boomy and 'loose' in comparison.

  • Ok. But thats what i love about guitar. i dont like it clean cut and evrything, i like it to sound like raw eletrical energy. :)

  • Oh yeah me too...I don't even ever use a 'clean' sound. This clip btw IS the clean channel. With my EMGs that's as clean as I ever want it to be :-) I never use 'drive' channels of amps, I take the clean channel and punch it with active pickups and turn it up until it is distorted enough...but I don't like amps/channels that are distorted even at low volumes. Its gotta be tubes tormented!

  • i dont mean clean as in no distortion, i mean that i like to hear the guitar itself elaborating on what im playing instead of it acting like a robot to what i play.

  • Well then you should really like active pickups, as they're the only ones that really let out the guitars sound and give you a flat response, not huge mid/low end peaks etc. like on passive designs. I've got exact same picups on 3 guitars and they all sound totally different animals-but with passives they'd sound pretty much the same. To me the difference in passives and actives is very similar to passive mics and condenser mics - the latter really open up the sound, responsiveness and power :-)

  • i have a chance to buy a 1987 marshall jcm 800 2205, for like 1k. is that a good amp? i know tht sometime after that marshall started to make shit amps. what kind is the one in the vid?

  • This is a 2210; the 2-channel one. I understand the 2205 is the same, but single channel. A very good Marshall, one of the good ones definitely, especially the early ones that were using the same parts etc. as a 2204. In any case it's a great classic rock amp, but bear in mind it's REALLY REALLY LOUD when you get the best sound :-)

  • hmmm, whcih jcm 800 would u say be the best?

  • 2204 50W is 'the' Marshall for rock music, IMO. But it's so loud it's hard to use. I had a 2x12" combo briefly, it's instant ACDC. I have a 'Marshall clone' amp with 18/36W switchable and it's the best Marshall for me - much less piercing sounds and volume, but real marshall feel and such.

  • kool

  • I never tried the loop on it...I only kept it a few weeks and then sold for good profit. I only need my 36W Ceriatone head...just bought it for testing purposes and to sell forward.

It did look really nice indeed!

  • Man your amp looks gorgeous in white tolex.

My 2205 Master Volume works just the same way, it just adds bass. When I bought it I thoght it was deffective or it had been modded.

Hey, how do you like its fx loop?

  • cool stuFFF...the sound of that 2210 really makes my wife smile!!!!

    r0ck oN!!!!!

  • No man, I don't...even on 2210 the clean channel is where the best sound lies...more modern Marshalls are entirely different beasts, of course IMO...gain machines. 2204, the old JMP...and my personal faves the El84 amps like Bluesbreaker, that's Marshall to me. Not the modern ones, albeit the JVM has some great sounds and the JMP-1 is very under-appreciated IMO...ModernVintage too seems like it could be good.

  • do you think the jcm 2000 dsl 50 or 100 is a good a amp as the jacm 800 2210...?just wondering...aloha fro haWaiiIIIii!!

  • Yep, 2210. (I don't have it any more though.)

  • cool stuff...!!im gonna try a 2210 in my gig...i do all outdoor stuff

my youtube is JANKOWSKI PATHOS TEXAS

    rock on aloha!!!

  • is your amp a 2210?...thanks

  • can it be used at home, and is it loud? of can it be used at home (50 watt version)

  • The decibel level between the 100 watt and 50 watt is actually only about 10 db's at most.

  • yes i know but 100 or 50 watt, can it be used at home?

  • At very low volumes or with an attenuator yes. 114 db like in the video is like being near a jackhammer volume wise.

  • thanks thats what i wanted to know

  • or instead of buying an attenuator, u could do something a little cheaper, u could put a volume pedal in the effects loop. it probably doesnt work as well, but its worth trying

  • Just buy a Marshall Powerbrake, get those tubes to burn hotter than hell!

  • Can it be used as a "practice-amp?" :)

  • Heheh, that's at the training facility...no problem there :-)

There's no song in the CM vid...well in the beginning I'm chording to an old song of mine, but from then on it's just totally random impromptu riffin'...Cheers, Dee

  • Your neighbours must be pretty stoked with you haha. Hey I would appreciate it if you could tell me what that song is you're playing in the cream machine vid. Cheers.

  • Heheh, yeah I sold the amp pretty soon. All I need is my Ceriatone 36W really.

It's no song...just riffin' to some ideas...no actual tune there :-)
