  • Good song and video, but this used to creep me out when I was younger......

Oh, who am I kidding, it still creeps me the ---- out!

  • @bamarine247 Yep! Same here!

  • 06:23 - *snickers* demon-boobies. Lol.

  • i just shat a tree

    D:

  • To this day, this creeps me out. When I was little, I tried to be brave and make it through this.. I wimped out stumbling to our ancient VHS while covering my eyes and struggled to find the STOP button. Haha. Oh the days of VHS.

  • @05vendetta I remember those days...

Of course, I was busy watching it in the family basement, with a makeshift drum set in an attempt to copy the music and feel of the show. I guess that's why I'm so messed up in the head now...XD

  • @05vendetta Yesss the VHS! Lol I had this too! Weird is that I was totally cool with at back then... now...

Let's just say finding building material won't be a problem

    (Because I just shat brix)

  • I want this Disney Back !!!

  • Scary and beautiful to the extremes of the definitions of both words. The music is spellbindingly powerful, along with the jaw-dropping visuals blending together into a dazzling piece of beauty. What a piece of art!

  • intro sounded really creepy considering how non-chalant the conductor sounded

  • Illumaniti.

  • To Disney: Why did you rename "The Devil" to such and obscure Slavic deity, I mean, It's the Devil who are kidding?! The Conductor even mentions him by name.

  • @0Iluvater0 Chernabog is the name used by the original composer, Mussorgsky, in his writings.

  • @Beowulf25 Chernabog is also the Slavic lord of Darkness, basically one of the Devil's many aliases.

  • @0Iluvater0 They are not aloud to call him the devil because of:

    A. people of other religions

    B. Kids

    C. Kids of other religions

  • @0Iluvater0 Chernobog, and the Devil are kind of the same thing.

  • Am I the only person who's annoyed that the conductor can't pronounce Ave Maria and Walpurgisnacht (Vahl-pur-gis-knocked)?

  • That's a bigass mountain

  • this scares me but i like it

  • i love the Hand drawn animation . its beautiful .

  • Chernabog - the demon who comes out at night and summons the spirits of the damned. He and his minions have their little "party" and revel in darkness. And then cue the sun - and he is forced to retreat back into his mountain: Ave Maria begins, symbolic of the triumph of good over evil.

    I love Fantasia.

  • Watch "Asylum" (1972) by Amicus pictures for another very effective use of this music!

  • This was always my favorite part of fantasia, it's the coolest and most terrifying part of the film

  • 4:35 and that's how women's birth

  • Comment removed

  • and on a whole different perspective:

    GREAT ANIMATION!! <3

  • I just love both peices. I relaxes me greatly

  • Tits at 6:26. Nuff said. Who cares about all this religious stuff? Tits guys, tits. We can all agree that tits are good.

  • @19andoverlol I disagree (because I have them). They're not as fantastic as you guys make them out to be.

  • Satan exalts in all his power and his ablity to play with the souls of the damned and corrupt good. But when the church bells come, symbolizing God , he is hurt as they toll. Evil lasts for awhile but it never holds a candle to good and the dawn that comes. Satan and his army's only hope to survival is to slink away and hide themselves from the Holy Power that approaches.

But eventually God won't allow Satan to hide any longer, Satan will be cast to the very place he threw the damned.

  • I must have been a desturbed little girl when I was younge I loved this sceen

  • This scared me when I watched it. But in the end, good triumphs. It always had and it always will.

  • I read about this on cracked.com. Had to watch it for myself!

  • Anyone notice that those harpy things at 6:25 have nipples...?

  • @MarioMiniComics kind ahard not to when its in your face?

  • destroy the satanic video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Who want's to be Chernabog? Show of hands (thumbs up?)!! Me!!

  • 6:25 BOOOOOOOOOBS!!!!! *¬*

  • @BlackLightDragon what about Frollo or Maleficent?

  • The thing that baffles me about this segment is the fact that people are apparently TOTALLY FINE with living right at the mountain's foot. Let me tell you, if I noticed one night that the top of the FUCKING MOUNTAIN had turned into god only knows what and was reaching down here to raise the dead, I think I'd get the holy hell out of dodge in one hell of a hurry.

  • @yankee999 Who's to say the people actually know what happens at night? I meant most people are typically at home in bed during the night; and in the olden days, most folk were too superstitious to venture out after dark.

  • @yankee999 its actually satan not god

  • @whatevers31 No no, he was saying "god only knows what."

He wasn't actually calling the creature god.

  • Favorite Disney Villain . Thumbs UP!

  • This and Tchaikovsky's Russian dance were my favorite parts when I was little.

  • some people say that the creature on bald mountain is actually called chernabog

but really take a look at it

its a horned beast bathing in fire with a bunch of dead people celebrating all that is evil and the only thing that kills him is the sound of church bells and ave maria

WHAT MORE EVIDENCE DO YOU NEED? THAT IS THE FREAKING DEVIL!!!! CALL HIM CHERNABOG ALL YOU WANT HE WOULD STILL BE THE DEVIL!!! DEVIL!!!

  • @TFSONICFAN100 Well, the character is named Chernobog, after the Slavic pagan deity, but yeah, obviously, they used a lot of imagery traditionally associated with Satan- of course, a lot of that imagery may have originally come from the demonization of pagan deities in the first place.

  • Boobies at 6:26-6:28. I remember seeing this as a kid. Didn`t scare me. Ironically, it scares me more now that I have more understanding of all this stuff.

  • apparently a friend of mine has serious pyschological issues because she saw this as a small child... :D thanx disney!

  • I remember seeing this when I was 3, I'm 17 now and I just saw Fantamic at Disney World last Sunday! I love the classic Disney, the new stuff sucks...

  • the animation is absolutely stunning!

  • hail satan! muhahaha!

  • 9:15 YouTube video: Music by Modest Mussorgsky, The Night on Bald Mountain; showcase for animator Bill Tytla, who gave the demon Chernabog a power and intensity rarely seen in Disney films.

    b. 3-21-1839 – Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, Russian composer (d. 1881)

  • @mkworkman You mustn't forget Leopold Stokowski. He not only of course conducted this, but arranged it, steering away from the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration and went to study Moussorgsky's original manuscripts in Russia. Though it's quite dramatically different from both versions. All of those sord strings, eerie portamenti, harmonics, gongs, stopped horns, muted trombones, trombone glissandi etc... are classic Stokowski staples, also to be found in his rendition of Pictures At An Exhibition.

  • When I was little and watched this with my mom I couldnt understand why she would always cry at the ending of this while I was scared to death and she would say "sooo beautiful". Now I know why, because I am now crying and saying so beautiful!!

  • nice XD

  • Chernabog and his minions come out at night, symbolizing Evil's brief reign over Earth- then when dawn arrives they retreat in fear. Ave Maria begins, representing the triumph of Good over Evil.

The whole thing is a metaphor for God's ultimate authority- How God is all powerful, all-knowing and eternal and Evil is impotent, ignorant and evil.

  • i love this part. couldnt get enough of it even as a kid

  • i bet this happens every october 31 outside your house besides this video should be scary in 3d

  • i hate today's standards on Disney ! no death 2 no evil 3 good must win 4 teach kids lesson on how to count to 4

  • Hooray for Bela Lugosi's hand modeling!

I loved this scene when I was a kid, and it remains as not only my favorite Disney animated piece, but one of my all time favorite animated pieces.

Man, if something like this was released in today's overstuffed, overcensored, overly self conscious society, soccer moms everywhere would be crying foul and protesting Disney.

  • Man, Chernabog just wanted to have a super awesome party and then the prudish Churchy neighbors ruined it. Now there are dishes everywhere and unfinished hors d'ouvre platters. And at the end he just says "never fuckin' mind" and goes to sleep instead.

  • @LadyTigerLily Also, even though I know Fantasia came first, I can't help but think of Panthro from Thundercats when I see Chernabog.

  • @fatalmasterpiece which sadly seems to include 90% of the entire human race.

  • this song is like Black Sabbath!!!!!!!!

  • 0:37-0:42 Seems pretty absurd to me. Why did Satan live on Bald Mountain? He lives only in Hell.

  • @Wingham64409 It really depends how you interpret Satan.

  • @Wingham64409 He does'nt live on Bald Mountain. He goes there to PAR-TAY!

  • Comment removed

  • @Wingham64409 he lives in hell .. but desinys are satanic s .. it shows you people selling their souls to the devil .. and the devil throw them at hell .. at the end of the film .. =D

  • This would be really bad ass if it was metal! If it can get anymore badass then it already is

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!! never has there been a better peice of animation made for a song than this one. Mussorgsky was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of his time this song should have been done with deep tuned guitars and death metal distortion!!!!! \m/ (*_*) \m/

  • I remember when this first aired on Disney channel during Halloween, you remember when they didn't fill their time slots with soulless teen comedies, and was so captivated by the music and art work. Its really iconic and powerful, I hope DC gets to showing more classics, or better yet, they get a separate channel with Disney originals.

  • 6:29

  • satan and the creatures of darkness lmao they're not serious

  • @bawain Yes.

  • @bawain Yes.

  • @XenothranHero wow,, no wonder western kids always complain of "something in the closet" or "someone under the bed"

n they grow up knowing things tht they shouldn't till they reach puberty

  • @bawain Oh, no. This isn't bad. Stuff like Family Guy, South Park, Beavis and Butthead or other stuff is the REAL "mind poison". This is a cinematic classic. Besides, the whole point of Bald Mountain/Ave Maria is good triumphs over evil. Plus, show of hands, who actually noticed the tits as a kid? I was paying more attention to the GIANT FUCKING DEMON ON THE MOUTAIN SUMMONING THE SPIRITS OF THE DAMNED AND TORTURING HIS OWN DEMONIC WORSHIPPERS!!!

  • @XenothranHero It's Chernabog the gargoyle but still lik the comment :D

  • @couchpotato65100 Actually no. It's quite clear that he's a demon god, and they state in the film itself that Chernabog was initially intended to be Satan himself. Never was a gargoyle, but something far more powerful and evil...

  • @XenothranHero O.o I apologize for my ignorance

  • @XenothranHero

    You know, you're right-

I won't let my kids watch this.

    One cannot have double standards.

  • @sagenichibotsu Agree with you. Don't kids witness enough evil in this world?

  • @XenothranHero -hahahaha omg you are awesome! I LOVE your comment! Very true also!

  • @XenothranHero Your argument comparing this scene to other cartoons is irrelevant. To show this scene to a small child is abusive. It is scary to them and rightfully so. The screen time portraying evil is by far greater than "good." You can call ANYTHING "art." It is art's impact on the viewer that bears the greatest importance here. Perhaps this type of cinematic art is best reserved for adults who less sensitive to glorified evil.

  • @MsPsychobanana While I will not argue that this does spend more time on evil than good, nor do I disagree that this is frightening for kids (I myself couldn't watch this until I was 12), my point here is that this person referred to this as filth, when in reality, this segment is probably one of the greatest examples of hand drawn animation ever created. My comparison to those other shows was that while this was made for adults, there were still some segments in Fantasia that kids could enjoy.

  • @XenothranHero get over it dosen't matter

  • @MsPsychobanana On the other hand, shows such as the ones I listed, are not appropriate for children of any age. Bald Mountain is indeed frightening, and does seem to glorify evil, but in the end, the message that evil is no match for good still manages to shine through. Shows like South Park, though, are loaded with excessive violence, swearing, sex and sexual situations, substance abuse, and many more things that may give a child the impression that many of these things are okay.

  • @MsPsychobanana Bald Mountain, despite its depiction of the forces of evil, makes it quite clear that the demon is pure evil. With shows like those on Adult Swim, those are only meant for adults because they're old enough to understand that most of the actions in the show should not be imitated. If people actually monitored what their children watched or played, then we wouldn't have films like Fantasia, which itself is a work of art, being chastised for things that other shows have done worse

  • @XenothranHero i would agree, if this wasnt made by illuminatists

  • @OldSkoolStudio What? No. Get out. Go take your whackjob conspiracy theories somewhere else.

  • @XenothranHero dont me mad bro, open your eyes ;)

  • @OldSkoolStudio Not mad, and I'm also not crazy.

  • @XenothranHero Stop calling those things "mind poison".

  • @nw5111 I only did it to prove a point and to mock that imbecile who essentially called Night on Bald Mountain garbage.

  • @XenothranHero sorry.

  • @bawain we watch it with our kids at least once a week. At least they don't talk all smartass like icarly or learn to look like whores from bratz.

  • @bawain it's a shame that there are people like you in this world, thinking a cartoon is more damning than anything the real world is doing on a daily basis. i once saw a film that taught the fundamentals you are describing, about purity, right and wrong, and the wrong doers of so called trash and poison killing our childrens minds. however, i couldn't understand it, as it was in german, and the kids were busy burning the books they should have been reading instead in the film.

  • @serpentisma haha i see what you did there

  • @bawain id rather show them good can defaet evil than tell them the only evil is the stuck up popular group at school. youve been watching too much hannah montana and jonas you little twit, go cry to your mommy QQ

  • @bawain Rubbish, my kids were watching this video at 3 or 4 there is nothing in this video that i find the least bit alarming. In fact my son always wanted to fast forward the tape to this song and the one with the dinosaurs. I guess I could have read tales of murder or the father sacrificing his son, or my favorite about the poor SOB that had this family killed lost all his possession all as part of a bet between a loving god and satan. Yeah, pure mind poison.

  • @bawain This is art

  • A long time ago, this segment use to scare me. From the music, to the ghosts, demons and finally, Chernabog himself. But now, this is the one piece of Fantasia I absolutely love. This is a super close second to the Rite of Spring. My all time favorite piece.

  • Chernabog's expression at 6:56: "What the FUCK?"

  • this my favorite classical song of all time. its a cool scene and all you people who thinks this is "unhealthy" for little kids need to give it a break. u people are losers! its just a song! i am an 8th grader and you should have seen it when our tried to play this song LOL. P.S Chernabog is pry the coolist disney villain ever.

  • This is my favorite sequence from Fantasia. Always loved it growing up. :) A sequence so good, even the Nostalgia Critic considered the Chernabog the greatest Disney villain. :)

  • @emfpki Chernabog IS the greatest Disney villain ever. P.S. I love this song

  • childrens minds are fragile. this scared the crap out of me as a kid. but I love the concept of this scene. Why did the church scene get cut out of this??

  • @tj47moeller Time limit, probably. Most videos don't go over ten minutes, or at least by much.

  • childrens minds are fragile. this scared the crap out of me as a kid. but I love the concept of this scene.

  • i remember watching this as a little kid way back when and completely losing my shit. now that i'm older, i can appreciate it a little more.

or at least accept exactly how badass chernabog is.

  • I hear real estate goes for pretty cheap in that town

  • This is a brilliant, brilliant piece of work for Night on Bald Mountain. I've always thought that it was a bit mature for Disney, but that doesn't take away from its awesomeness.

  • bald mountain is kenny chesney's nick name

  • In band we were playing a piece called house if horrors and part of this was in it and I nearly spazzed out. I was saddened when more then half the class never saw fantasia or heard this song.

  • You just have to appreciate the unbridled, running amok with a purpose of the great evil. The worship of the flames of wanton passion, the evil encompassing every bit of natural light. The lost souls...and then Salvation. And evil crawls unwittingly back into darkness. Let the war begin.

  • The symbolism is beautiful - Darkest just before dawn. When the sun rises, Chernabog and his minions retreat in fear, then Ave Maria plays, emblematic of the triumph of Good over Evil. Their little "Party" amounts to nothing, and the tone is set for a brighter future.

    Simply delightful.

  • this is the thing that Gene Simmons would do

  • <3 Omag...great scary childhood memory!!!LOL The night on bald mountain has been one of my mother's favorites and she used to play the record so often when I was a child and I got so scared every time I listened to it...Now after so many years, I can finally appreciate it*^o^* Thank you so much for posting & sharing this awesome music animation vid with great explanation*^o^* <3

  • This part used to scare me when I was little!

  • @Sporky772 me too :D

  • @Sporky772

    me to brother (or sister)

im 19 now i use to love but also fear this scene when i was 3-4

  • @Sporky772 You and thousands of other kids!

  • Am I the only one who can't help thinking of Earthworm Jim and What the Heck when I hear Night on Bald Mountain?

It really makes it hard to take this seriously. Which sticks, 'cause I remember watching this as a kid and being scared (in a good way). Oh the ruined memories. :( I love you Jim, but you ruined it! RUINED IT!!! *shakes fist* :P

  • The human body is natural. Granted I do not think children should watch porn, but if you think this is pornographic you are a moron and should be removed from the gene pool. There are already more than enough idiots without you making it worse. Children do not think anything of the 8 second flash of breast in this. Children are now hidden from the realities of the world and do not learn how to deal with life. Nothing in this is bad, this is a great piece, and a classic video. Thanks uploader

  • @daemonsdiablo I don't think children should be be exposed to sex before their about 10 but yea the 8 second pic is harmless. Plus, kids watch way worse crap nowadays.

  • @fatalmasterpiece something children should not see what is the message in this shit

  • Fuck the whole "Satan and his evil people dancing madly " shit. If anything, their ways make more sense than the "righteous, just church-bells" do.

  • @Metalhead4569 It's the symbolism that matters. I agree that they should have had more than just church bells a light to symbolize good, but I think they wanted to keep it simple. I think they were trying to show how much more powerful good is over evil by showing how just the church bells (a symbol of praise to God) were enough to keep the evil spirits back where they belong. Still, it would've been nice to have a little more than just church bells, IMO.

  • @Metalhead4569 I hear you, my friend.

  • Why is a new narrator being used? The original man was best.

  • I hate that they overdubbed Deems Taylor's lovely sonorous voice with this mousy voice.

  • Dude, thanks for uploading this video! Ever since I was a child, I've always loved this video! I loved the dark animations and the music is absolutely superb. Thanks again! 100/10 for you!

  • i would like to correct you on that it is the devil disney wanted to remove its namesake because you call it anything else it makes it seem less bad to them overall. it is one of wickest things to see him in action in a way.

  • the socre and animatio nfor this is just beautiful why can't we have things like this in Disney anmore?

  • I use to love this, I remember when Disney would show just "Night on Bald Mountain" during the week o Halloween, it was my favorite part of the programing on Disney at that time. I wish they'd show real Halloween things like they use to (anyone remember the animation of headless horseman?) I miss those days.

  • pack the pipe with this is crazy yo...

  • @fatalmasterpiece You right dude.

  • this was a disney movie? wtf?

  • @soflo23, yes, before Disney was worried about virginity rings and the best way to over-sex underage kids w/o looking as if they were doing so.

  • @soflo23

"So was "Max Devlin and the Devil"

  • I remember being scared senseless by this as a toddler! It feels so weird to be able to watch it calmly now and simply appreciate it in all its morbid beauty.

  • Essentially, two people are responsible for the atmosphere and animation of this great portion of Fantasia--Key Nielson and Vladimir Tylta. Nielson created hundreds of drawings that inspired every scene in it, and Tytla did ALL of the animation of Chernabog. "Bill" Tytla (which is what he preferred to be called) was a great animation pioneer, and perhaps one of the greatest animators who has ever lived. Unfortunately, most of his recognition came only after his death in 1968.

  • they played this song on wildboyz when they were hanging upside down being spun around this ride lol

  • The firedancing reminds me of Hellfire..hmm, insperation from this maybe? :)

  • @LolitaLexi, the entire motion is a depiction of demons on (America's version of) Halloween night, of course the dancing flames are meant to be hellfire, what else would those types of demons dance with?

  • Where did the name "Chernabog" come from for the giant evil gargoyle-like guy?

  • @ztslovebird It's from Russian folklore, where Chernabog is a devil god (also 'Chernevog'.

  • @jitsukerr Oh! Cool; thanks for the info!

  • @ztslovebird It comes from the name of an ancient slavic demon found in the myths of Russia and the other slavic nations.

  • What kind of a cruel bastard do you have to be to ressurect the dead just to destroy them again? Only the devil!

  • Unholy God Of Evil vs. Antique Church Bells

    Winner- Antique Church Bells

  • @MellowSquash You wish. Hope my Ironical Remark of Satire doesn*t bother you "Antique church bells" don't exist. It's either Church Bells or Antique. Choose.

  • @slyrocoth i was trying to exaggerate it dude

  • @MellowSquash me too ;)

  • @slyrocoth oh you lol

  • Comment removed

  • this is definitely some twisted shit to be showing your kids.

  • Why in the hell is this narrated by Brainiac?!?

  • I love this portion of the film. Dropped some acid and just fell into my couch and had the most wonderful time of my life

  • I bought the original VHS Disney Fantasia from Disney World Paris and I never understood the movie until today. When I got the game "Kingdom Hearts" I played it A LOT and I completed the game 100%. When I got to this boss... All the horrible bad dreams came back to my mind... I don't fear this part anymore, I've learned to understnad it.

I am not Satanisting tho :P

  • hard to believe that i watched this as a child

  • i used to watch this movie all the time as a child and i certainly don't worship satan you cant be surprised that he goes undefeated back to his hell that;s the whole message isn't it good will triumph but evil is constant

  • This part used to scare the SH*T outta me as a kid! I remember seeing Disney On Ice when i was like 7 or 8ish and at the end they brought out the scary mountain guy. I thought WTF?!?!

  • @hotpink910 my mom always fast forwarded to the end.

  • This was rated G.
