  • This is sooooooooooooooooooo brilliant ~ so is John Barry he lived where I went to school and I can feel a lot of the North in this soundtrack, his last (

    Movie is brilliant !

  • One correction to Soundtrackcollector's write up, above, of the film: he says that "nerds, Bolsheviks and math whizzes" werre employed at Bletchley Park during the war. The 3rd description is correct; the 1st is a matter of opinion but the only person who came close to being a Bolshevik was the traitor John Cairncross who was passing intelligence to the Russians - albeit very low-level stuff and of no real consequence.

The film story is fiction but all the technical bits are correct.

  • Such a pity that this was his last soundtrack, he captures the atmosphetre and the time of the films setting to a tee, a brilliant soundtrack from a brilliant composer.

  • The greatest film composer ever maybe. Hard to replace.

  • There is only one John Barry. I believe he must have experienced a lost very deeplove to be able to express such pure beauty and depth in his music which has always touched my soul like no toher composer. God bless you John

  • I still love this very much. Been out this weekend close to home in the Dales. Epic views make me think of Epic music........ ;-)

  • although Barrys last score for a film it still oozes class even though it's far from his best work, Barry's work after scoring The Specialist in 1995 took a bit of a dive in terms of quality but this is still 100 times better than most scores you hear today.

  • john barry must be one of thee best composers...love every theme hes done andnot to mention the classic production on the bond themes like view to a kill and the living daylights from two of my favourite bands of the 80s.....nice video

  • @johnofett ...totally agree.

    Thanks again.

  • This was one defeat for the British cracking the German Enigma encoding/decoding.

    The John Barry score wow.

    R.I.P. John Barry

  • @EmpireLS56KW

    Well said.

  • John Barry is the best composer of the twentieth century!

  • Deserved a much better film.

  • I thought this was a great film. And, to have John Barry compose and conduct the score was icing on the cake-very fine icing, I may add.

  • They did not look like them.. sorry?

  • @Hunternet7 Tom Jericho and Hester Wallace?

  • @Hunternet7 In the film 13 Days, the actor Bruce Greenwood did not look like President Kennedy, yet he delivered a fine performance and rendition of who we think of as JFK. In a historical picture, it is indeed important to have actors who reasonably look like their real life counterparts. But, it is more important to have an actor who can actually act the part with conviction, rather than simply looking the part. If I had to choose, I personally would prefer good acting, too a good likeness.

  • one of the best movies i ever saw all my life and its true story and the soundtrack is reallr awsome even the actars - perfect

  • @Faoakeh. Sorry to rain on your parade but the story in this film is fiction!! The only real bits are the references to Enigma,: the Bombe Machines and the cribs and menu's for the Bombe Machine. That's because the Historical & Technical Advisor on the film was Tony Sale, who works at Bletchley Park. He ensured that all of the technical bits were correct, but the rest is fiction!! Even the building depicted in the film as Bletchley Park Mansion is actually Chicheley Hall, not Bletchley Park!!

  • Thanks for sharing the genius that is John Barry.

  • Excellent film , excellent theme , John Barry for long years has been a source of truly haunting tunes and more... a source of great pleasure , undisputed excellence. The film could hardly be better !.

  • John Barry the best composer in the world!

    NOBODY DOES IT BETTER!

  • @leandro00000000007 Gracias!

  • @leandro00000000007 Absolutely!

  • Among the most inimitable and instantly recognizable film composers of all time, and this score is among his tops. It brings some of the urgency and breathy espionage motifs of his Bond scores to mind. I love the film, but as always, a John Barry score makes any film just that much better. God, why isn't he composing anymore?

  • Great comment ...thanks for visiting.

  • He is composing! :)

He's set to release a new piece called "the seasons" in 2010, it'll be his first release since the score for "Enigma" and his "Eternal Echoes" in 2001 !

76 years old, but still the best, or i haven't heard it yet of course, but i bet we'll love it!

  • Wow, his last score is so inspiring. I wasn't a fan of his work for Dances with Wolves but this is a lot better.

  • The last of scores from JB, and truly perfection its marriage with what is a brilliant movie.

  • Thanks for your comment.

  • Amazing!!!

  • Thanks for your comment.

  • I fully recommend this film...I can not explain to myself how it is almost unknown.... the BSO is nice

  • ommm beautiful musssssssssic. Great vid- it struck me that ww2 for brits they had a lot of the "war" in their midst, suspicion, codes. I am american and Iraq is far far away.

  • The film is of course fiction, but so many of its elements are hard facts. The blending of everything from encryptions, loosing the codes, MI5, Katyn, Bletchley, and raw human emotion, with John Barry's music is inspiring - truly outstanding film achievement

  • @Amarventris It's easy to forget. We were relatively safe here stateside during WWII. For the Brits, the war was above them every day for an awfully long time. For our allies across the pond, vengeance weapons, and a possible invasion were a stark reality. Iraq and Afghanistan are a world away it seems.

  • @robeebv1. Absolutely true, and it's nice to see that someone from the US appreciates that fact! America tried to stay out of the war as long as possible but what many fail to realise is that if the Germans had completely overrun Europe, and they had had the chance to develop their long range ICBM's, not to mention their nuclear weapons, the US would have been the next target!! There is no such thing as being neutral in a global war!!! America has learned that lesson - eventually!!

  • @ScrumptiousStrat: It is indeed horrifying to consider the prospects of a German atomic weapon mated to their V-2 (or planned V-3) rockets... be thankful the Norwegian SOE commandos, the "Heroes of Telemark," blew up the Norsk Hydro heavy water plant, and thereby crippled the Nazi atomic research program. "Enigma," despite being fictional (based on the Robert Harris novel), gave long-overdue credit to the codebreakers of Bletchley, who did so much to win the war. An under-rated film IMHO...

  • @Amarventris try the incredibles thats a barry piece

  • This film is a brilliant piece of insight as to just what these guys did during the WWII. Also I never knew about it until 2003 so that shows it didn't get half the Promo's it deserves!! great directing, and acting especially Winslett, she really is a talented woman! nice post thanks alot..3 stars.

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Let's hope it's not reduced to a TV-cut film matinee just yet.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • I'm with you there!! also excuse my grammar...I meant I didn't know about the film until 2003 as it was released 2001 not the actual codebreakers lol. regards.

  • amazing film & as always with JB an amazing soundtrack.

  • EXCELLENT SOUNDTRACK!

  • Did you know that John Barry couldn't write a note of music until he answered one of those 'Compose Music in Your Spare Time ' ads in the paper?

  • Thanks for your comment.

Young JB would help his father in the cinema developing a fascination for film music whose composition became his ambition. He also had the opportunity to meet many of the Classical and Jazz artists who came to perform in the theatre. While doing his National Service he joined the army band playing trumpet and learned how to arrange jazz.

  • Barry oince called his style 'Pop Wagner' and this is as good as any example of that.

  • "There is an extremely thoughtful approach to each of his scores that avoids pastiche in favor of simplicity. Like the music or not, his scores are generally "right" for the films they accompany. I think the ENIGMA score is a perfect example; many people complain that it is "slow", but there is such an underscoring of tension and uneasiness in it that the tempo never even enters the picture for me."

Michael Moyer - Film Score Monthly

  • Cracking Brit movie which gets better with a couple of watches as the plot is a little tricky to follow the first time. John Barry does what he does best of any theme writer and that is create haunting and suspense with clever use of background sweeping melody with a ting-ting-pling-pling front sound (sorry, late and I'm tired and out of the right words :))

    Thx for putting this up

  • Nevertheless, a great comment - thanks.
