@opencurtin as long as your in good physical health, I would recommend taking up martial arts. You can see a lot more Chinese Kenpo and Tai Chi on The Martial Artist Channel on internet television station ITS-DMS. The lead line for this site will reference "a grassroots effort ..."
@opencurtin There are video demos of various masters performing all sorts of techniques and acrobatics even up to 110 years old. I highly suggest yoga or Tai Chi/Chi Kung type exercise to start off with, develop flow and strength. Or at least practice slow and gentle at first. Kenpo is a good art for all ages and body types.
You are attempting to do a good job with a 'Poor" understanding of the techniques!! The 1st tech would have been Falcons of force in the EPK , the 2nd waist of time and the 3rd is EPK as well but taught to the wrong side, but works on either if you understand the basics that are being taught. Seeing techniques performed in this manner is what has given, (EPK), Ed Parker Kenpo such a bad name. You need to go and train with those 1st generation black belts under EPK, then you will understand!!!
I learned the First two Techniques as "Opponents at Sides " and "Bear hug Pinned in Back ". It's fun seeing the different names for techniques, and it was an alright demonstration by the way.
And that's why Bruce lee decided he had all the training he needed after Ed Parker taught him kenpo in Hawaii ; ) Weird he didn't finish with something else right? Not when kenpo is the smallest amount of movement, with the most effective strikes. ( at least Ed parkers was )
first off, there was never a martial art form called kenpo. it was a misspelling from the students that lost their master, but continued training, period. the actual art is based on Kempo, but in a less complete form.
second, you got to be pretty damn ignorant and irresponsible to be teaching these things to people without any REAL instruction or control. there are things that can seriously hurt people if not kill them. not to mention the injuries for trying to do something you're not ready for
I do not study "chinese" or American Kenpo, however, as a student of Kosho ryu Kempo, I would like to add in that if, in your crossing talons technique, if you were to push in deeper after the lock, it would take the other hand out of the equation as he would instinctivly place his hand on the ground for fear of falling over...
Commercialism. Same reason they have belt tests. Instead of training for ten years and going straight from white to black they give you a variety of belts so you won't quit and will keep giving them money.
ok know it all..The belts are to identify the level of experience of the students or stylists..TKD is infamous for testing fees but most Kenpo studios have none. Also the belts do give children a sense of achievemant and what is wrong with that..uhhh NOTHING.
They wear Japanese Gi because Kenpo came to Japan where it was called Shorinji Kempo, and later Kosho Ryu Kenpo under James Mitose in Hawaii, and then Kara Ho Kenpo under William Chow, who changed the color of the Gis from white to black to distinguish it as a combat martial art. Kenpo is a hybrid of Kung Fu, Karate, and Jujutsu, so it has both Chinese and Japanese influences. The Gi is reflective of the Japanese influence, whereas the Tiger/Dragon symbol is reflective of the Chinese influence.
or just maybe because the gi looks or feels good...there isn't always some hidden or deep meaning behind everything a martial artists does. In the last thirty years I have worn a variety of gi's just because
@Kippest well prob because theres martial arts dojo everywhere you should be able to find a chinese style martial arts in japan lol but about the Gi that may be the reason but it is indeed strange
This man's opponent is standing so far away from him that he would need a handgun to do any harm. As an instructor I can tell you that it is very easy to look good TALKING your way through techniques. At no point does this fellow actually demonstrate his abilities to us. Parker's techniques are far superior to these (more logical).
The exit in driving exit should be to a 45 right? Perhaps it was and it didn't show well in the video. Seems to me the exit needs to be off the line of power.
you can use the edge of the hand (knifehand) or more of a forearm shot. The forearm has only two (very large) bones and the striking surface is harder.
This stuff would work good in a bar against a drunk person. On the streets, I'm not so sure. All the bear hugs I have seen, the guy was driven to the ground or wall to fast for anything.
I studied Chinese Kenpo and Shotokan Karate when I was around 14 and was a brown belt at 16. Unfortunately, I dropped out of it, but I was very good and the Chinese version of it is superior!
I don't really know much about this, but isn't kenpo/kempo a whole bunch of chinese martial arts? Like saying japanese japanese person, or american american flag.
This vid shows some pretty good moves. I have been studying judo for several years (brown belt) and I got an overall interest in martial arts, so I know it when I see something good. This guy has got some skills.
These are good techniques if you already know some martial arts. They wouldnt be much use for those with no background in karate or a hard kung fu style as the person wouldnt be able to generate proper hip power. Still, good applications for a traditional style.
The ignorance is astoundingly vast and fortified in the world of martial arts.
1) Jeff O'Donnell knows his Kenpo, the art, history and philosophy. You ignorants don't even know what Kenpo means. Hint: It's Japanese. And no, Kenpo, the system, did not originate from Japan. BAKAYAROU!!
2) Since you've read this far, I'll enlighten you. Kenpo is a Japanese term for CHINESE martial arts.
Do your research before making asses out of yourselves. The martial arts industry have enough asses already.
This is incredible! I never thought i would learn self defense against a dummy and a guy who goes with the choreography. This is real world self defense!! I guess this would all work if you could ask your attackers in advance to tell you exactly when they are punching at you. It would work out perfectly. And look amazing! lol Jesus I can't believe the kind of brainwashing that is going on in martial arts still! Wheww. For all who wonder--Everything I said was completely sarcastic . lol
lol i dont think i have ever seen anyone say the names of the moves of chinese kenpo in forever. eagle pin is a fun move to practice since when you learn it you use another move you learned previously in the move. how fun!
Respecting the video maker/owner for putting the warnings up on the video. It's also a sort of respect for its viewers & a safety measure for the creators. :)
Sorry to see so many resistant comments out there, no art is perfect, chinese kenpo is one of the better styles for any actual combat situation. I studied from the Ed Parker style, it's been altered some. Now I'm doing Cage fighting and my knowledge of stand up fighting and take downs is paying off. Viva Ed Parker!!!
I'm the shooter of the video. I've been a karateka (Uechi-Ryu) since 1976. I've studied Jeet Kune Do and observed Chinese Kenpo. No style that I'm aware of can guarantee success in any situation. Each situation is unique unto itself.

@tenkai82 I dont think he said it was useless I think he said that it was not always feasable. Thats true of alot of more traditional martial arts you might not have the room to do a wushu kick and all this fancy moves but each art has its weaknesses and strengths
@LightxKira5643 this is true, chinese martial arts are amazingly strong. and i used to do chinese kenpo, HOWEVER, chinese kenpo is NOT kung fu, nor a chinese system, ironically. real wushu/kung fu/ chinese martial arts have a completely different philosophy and body mechanic (i now study traditional kung fu - praying mantis, baji quan, tongbeiquan, longfist ) and study under top kungfu instructors, and in china. ..this chinese kenpo is merely just japanese karate with some 5 animal handstrikes
@tenkai82 Its weird I read an article today on a Tracy's Kenpo website that said that American kenpo has never produced a world class fighter thats really sad. It wasnt a good article about Kenpo
no guarantee that shows that your techniques are not time tested and proven thats why im a grappler and striker striks dont work on everybody + i know a better way of getting out of that last wrist lock and thats puple belt i feel bad for you guys
It's nice when 2 attackers wait there turn to attack while you stand in the middle of them- LOL that why they had about a minute and a half of warnings for this crap!
youre an idiot. they slowed everything down so that it is easier to see what is happening. and you may never use half of those techniques but the point is to train you several different ways to approach a problem so when you are faced with an attack similar to that you can react near instantaneously.
I'm sorry, I got tired of reading the messages that kept appearing on the screen. They wouldn't end, so I stopped watching...the Chinese Kenpo Message. What an experience.
Its interesting how i have no idea who you are where you are from or where you've trained... and yet ive learned the same moves with the same names(except there are some variences within a couple of the moves themselves).
hey, great kempos/self defense techniques. VladdXIII: no guarantee means, going over the material once is a guarantee that it will not work. regular practice elevates your chance at using part of if not all of the technique to help protect yourself. if you have to cook for 10 house guests, would you feel comfortable cooking a three course meal with no experiance?
they just say that bcus they dont want to get in trouble if u trie to imitate those moves and u dont do it right even though it will work all u have to do is practice it
Because Chinese Kenpo is known as the second deadliest martial art, they can not say that everyone can do it properly. It also keeps them out of any legality issues. You have to cover your ass, on the street and in the court room. =)
Bruce Lee had a funeral stone in front of his school with the inscription "In memory of a once fluid man crammed and distorted by the classical mess".
