Seriously though, the PXL was an awesome bit of lo-fi technology and has such a neat "feel" to it. I used to have one that was deep-discounted at a department store, and had great fun goofing with it...and then the mini-TV crapped out and the camera itself disappeared in a cross-country move. (I still have the AC adapter, though...)
Agh! yeah there's a couple on ebay at the moment going for £200+ i might have to just bite the bullet and get one from there. Can't find any anywhere else!
I remember seeing these, if I recall, they were a bit on the expensive side ($300 in 1987??) I think it is AMAZING that they could record video onto a cassette, and I believe it works like a VHS tape, you can't flip it over to side B, right?
Your cat is so cute! Thanks for showing us this in actual use. What is the sound quality like?
Actually you can record on both sides of the tape, It uses a standard stereo tape head. It runs the tape at 12x speed & records the audio on one track & the video on the other. The sound quality is pretty good though it's built in mic picks up motor noise which is pretty loud considering the speed it runs. The increased speed was necessary to store the higher bandwidth video signal & even then they had to crop a black square around the image & it looks best with CrO2 Tapes.
This was not made in 1977, it was in the mid 80s like 1986 or 87. I have one of these sonewhere. I love it. I remember when they came out I wanted is really bad. In 1977 I would of only been A few months old so I know it came out in the 80s. Video cameras weren't even around in 77.
oops, I typed that from my memory, Which apparently isn't very good. I got it out of the closet & looked at the back of it, It was made in 1987. Thanks, I changed the information.

My friend had one of these, we'd make all kinds of wacky shiznit with it. I'd post some, too, if it wasn't all so gay in hindsight! LOL
