Its before my time... but there was a time when people knew how to let loose and get down to this music. Its such a sad thing to see such a funky band and just a sea full of nodding heads..... The band is just asking .... "PLEASE... WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE BUST A MOVE RIGHT NOW!!!"
Maceo Parker (Kingston N.C.) His stacco style can't be beat. damnnnnnnnnn. The two ppl you did not like this video are probably Supremist or Republicans (<;. They like Insane Clown Possee.. This is a jam and you gotta know how to jam..
carroll dashiell, on bass, was my history of jazz professor when i was a student at east carolina university. he's the freakin' man and his kids are awesome too, they're all musicians and singers :)
Tight. Tight. Tight. It's refreshing to see & hear musicians playing their instruments. As opposed to today's "music", where rappers are: ignorant, crack-heads, jail-bird/thugs, and music thieves (samplers). Mr. James Brown was great! Maceo, Mr. Wesley, Pee Wee & the rest shaped what we call funk. "I break out, in a cold sweat!"
Maceo is the Real deal! Him and Fred connected to the old days with Count Basie - James Brown and in todays music with Prince. You can't fake the funk.
I saw him about 2 weeks ago, he definitely still has it. Just about the most together and tightest groove I've ever heard. Shook the man's hand, now that's something I don't think I'll ever forget.
that muthafucka melvin parker is 2 muthafuckin funky! this dude iz my idol.that's who i wanna play like!everyone talks about clyde and jabo, like they started funk drumming, but it was melvin parker who really set the pace for clyde and jabo! it's really sad that he does'nt get the credit he deserves! that man is a genius!
JB said "Maceo bring it down but I want you to blow". All the boys, Sinclair Pickney on Baritone, Alfred 'Pee Wee" Ellis, Fred Westley, Jabbo etc. Remember when they threatened to not play if JB didn't give them a raise. JB fired them on the spot and flew in "Bootsey Collins and hes band. Maceo tried to start his own group, "Maceo and the Macks. Fred Westley attempted to start the "Kings Men"
I had the honor and pleasure of studying bass under Carroll Dashiell at East Carolina University. He's an amazing player, but an even better person. This video doesn't begin to show his ability.
Who remembers that Maceo Parker played the original Cold Sweat solo and answered Mr. Brown's calls of "Maceo. blow!" on tenor sax? As a young tenor sax player back in the day who based his whole stage persona and style on Maceo Parker, I can say that I DO! It took me only a little while, though, to get used to his change to alto sax which may have eclipsed what he did on tenor. Anybody else care to offer an opinion?
Saw Maceo live in Toronto recently. One of the best concerts EVER (and I've seen plenty in 40+ years). As a James Brown afficionado, I absolutely remember Maceo back in the day. Not to take anything away from Mr Brown, but I think Maceo has added depth and substance since fronting this "2% jazz/98% funk" style . Alto sure seems to work well for him....and us, too.
@freddypknight Yeah Baby! I loved his Tenor..amazing what he does on Alto though too, but who could forget the glory days with James...Sheeeeeeeet....... They broke this mold . I feel blessed to have been there in MY prime....Good times to be alive in those days...Oh yeah!!! Great Memories!
This sounds afully good live. Nice blend on the horns. You have to be tight to get that groove to come across outside the studio. Thanks for sharing this.
I don't agree that Maceo's vocals are better than James Brown's like someone already mentioned, but I love that band is able to stretch out a lot more on this version. Great video.
Dashiell has been an incredible bassist since highschool. If I remember correctly, Sister Sledge (produced be LeChic) wanted him right out of highschool. I remember him playing a Bradley Jazz bass (Fender copy) early in college, he's been holding a serious groove since the late 70's.
