  • The songs made in the 90's really were better than the stuff we get today, to be honest. Even the one-hit-wonders had more thought and production put into them than the endless Bieber ripoffs and generic rock bands we get nowadays.

  • I'm 15 and this is one of my favorite songs :) This is not only for "Old people" haha

  • @IFMJohn Ouch! I'm 45 and listened to this back in the 90's and love it, even though i'm an 'old people' person.

  • I am so glad I was born in an age where music was music and

    MTV and VH1 play music.

  • Still wondering the full meaning of this song ... remembering the 90s, what a musical revolution the decade was full, the modern rock, alternative rock and grunge rock movements ... the 2000s have been full of garbage music.usually just listen to the 80s and 90s ...

  • @DJMightyRaton

I think you pretty much speak for everyone with this comment, well said.

  • Thank God for the 90's! What are these kids listening to these days? That's right.! We are now our parents.... and officially OLD. Sucks doesn't it? =/

  • i love this song, but i think that Jay Brannan's cover is better

  • this song still makes me cry ... this song and the drug's don't work are still two of the best songs of the 90's (=

  • Thanks for posting this. What a rush of memories this song brings.

  • It seems to me that this song was written by someone with personal experence in the matter

  • @nightwing245

ya the writer actually did have a gf where they had an abortion and cancelled a wedding, the only part he changed was that she didn't kill herself

  • when music was real and innocent..like the 90s

  • i think this song sums up the 90's

  • @abrewstajus4u nah bro Eve6 - Here's to the Night, or Closing Time haha..

  • This video is way better quality than the other one with more views.

  • Definitely brings back memories, some good, some bad, some well forgotten. Enjoy it because we don't get this kind of music anymore. The great music of the 90's is gone and I miss the hell out of it, at least we can listen to it here.

  • Really great song! Lots of memories.

  • they play this song at my brothers funeral back 98 he was only 17 r.i.p bro

  • @televator81 So why didn't you write it first, then?

  • My best friend Andy(R.I.P. MY BRO) & I USE TO SING THIS AT THE TOP OF OUR LUNGS.

  • people should stop complaining about videos not being shown any more on mtv and vh1. most cable providers and dish services offer multiple video channels geared toward specific genres and time periods. check em out.

  • I still get chill bumbs when I listen to this song...

  • Why did the 90's have to fly by so fast?

  • This song always goes over great when i do it at karaoke.

  • Can i have a weeks worth of valium??

  • i won't be held responsible, she fell in love in the first place

  • They're at ACL Fest Saturday... should be schweet

  • I was a freshman when this came out. Loved it!

  • i was in highschool when this came out,,,,,,, it still makes me dig thru my closet for my football jersey,,,,, stiill cant find it,,, that damn cheerleader has it,, i know it.....

  • @IRONSEAN7 by now she threw it away....

  • This song was the second slow dance at my grad 9 years ago.

Lotta memories with this song . . .

  • wats this actually pointing to i love music and it appears love song ish and at times its got overtones for drugs and thinking they know shit but fall apart...im sure lots of ppl can relate to that some more destructive memories than others...mine...still linger

  • this video always makes me feel like taking a weeks worth of valium :)

  • I love this girl... and this song makes me think about her..... too bad the lyrics are so sad...

  • I will tell you why the MTVs and VH-1s dont play videos..Its because bands and record companies cant spend the money to produce them..And,do you know why?..Its because of sites like this, that makes album sales plummets..Its a vicious circle that the internet has done..It has helped create the problem, but at least it gives the the avenue to bitch and complain about it..Now,THATS irony, isn't it?

  • @trevLV VH1 stopped playing music vids LONG before youtube hit the scene. Nice try though.

  • i'm with you Epic96 those were the good days of vh1 and now all they play is more shows and less music where did the music go man, MTV is the same way bummer miss the 90's

  • for the life of me, i CANNOT remember, where i left my car keys

  • first time ever hearing this song and its an instant favorite

  • mtv and vh1 still play music??

  • @Dave19812506 Late at night. Then again, I can't call what they play music.

  • @Dave19812506 no. this was back when vh1 actually played music. this song with a big hit in the 90s

  • Yup, back in the day MTV and VH1 actually played music. I think now, what, a few hours a week?

  • What the hell happened to this band?

  • fucking 1 hit wonder bands make me sick,,,, Epic song tho for sure

  • @lotushead666 Wasn't "Never Let You Down" a pretty big hit too?

  • This is still my favorite song, but this video doesn't do it any justice. I don't feel the video fallows the story.

  • i love this song it's a claasic. yeah all music today are garbage. ....

  • @StonenStick

Radiohead, MGMT, SIgur Rios, Magwai, Mew, The Dresden Dolls and Muse all do good music. It's out there, just hard to find.

Most of the late 1990s music was crap too. Most of it was more like Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Hanson and the Macarana . Nostalgia makes people forget that.

  • @unopeneddoor Oh wow you didn't like Hanson & Ricky Martin? They may not be the same as The Verve Pipe, but the entire decade of the 1990s was pretty epic with the music whether it was the R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop/Dance, Latin, Soft Rock or Hard Rock. Even the Country music was hot in the 90s.

  • @PopCulture20 Hanson and Ricky Martin were terrible. The 90s had some pretty bad music in addition to good music.

  • what is a "verve pipe" ?

  • @vsbp Ditto

  • this is definately one of my favs they dont make them like this anymore i wish they did

  • you know what sucks: this was their biggest single, and they never released this version on their albums. they only released the acousitc version. =( I remember buying the cd when I was in 5th grade only to be so upset that this version of the song wasn't on the album.

Drive you mild made up for it slightly, though.

  • ah i was in 7th grade when this came out, remember going to cd wherehouse and picking this cd up after hearing it on the way to school in my moms van.

  • omg this is so old school i was a kid when this came out i love this song

  • The song brings to the table the reality that sometimes it's also hard on the guy, not just the girl.

  • this is such a beautiful song. one of my favorites.

  • google mp3iiffy to download this song from youtube.

  • i just heard this song a couple days ago for the first time.

    it is a beautiful song.

makes the music coming out now-a-days seem aweful. dont get me wronge im a 17 year old guy and i like my rock and a little bit of rap but it doesnt tell the stories this song does. cant beat the love/slow songs from the 80's and 90's.

  • I met Brian Vander Ark back when i was 16 years old, my band teacher plays with the band on occasions and brought him to our school and signed his CD for us :). He's a super nice guy...he even did an acoustic version of this song for us along with his solo songs. anyway....great song!

  • how are you feeling these days?

  • I heard this on the radio last night for the first time in years. I'd completely forgotten what a great song it is!

  • there are really no words to describe this song.

  • i have to say that i have so much respect for this song. everyone uses music to escape. we sometimes listen to certain songs alone and personally to get that feeling of recharging our soul's batteries. like taking lunch at work to break for the rest of the day. i use this song to break me from one stress of life to the next. it dosent cure anything specifically but it gives me that much needed rest, if only temporarily lol.

  • Man, such a powerful song! The lyrics are so touching, they just make you weep through and through. I can totally feel where Brian's words are coming from, makes everyone remember and just wanna kick themselves of letting The One they let slip away. So sad and tragic, a true love song! One of the best I've ever heard!

  • Man, such a touching song. So powerful lyrics in this, the message I think makes us all feel sad and resentful of all of our mistakes made in the past; love in particular. I can totally feel the vibe in this that Brian's lyrics and vocals present. Just Beautiful.

  • laylalillydee, you sound way too pumped considering you lost your kid.

  • a great song.

  • I can feel the same as Vander ark. about this song. believe me everytiem i hear it it makes me go back and think about what had happened.

  • this is one of the best songs i really love from the 90's. I can't get that song out of my head when I bring back some great memories from the past when I was growing up!!!

  • one of my all time fave songs...brings back alot of good memories!

  • This was back when VH1 actually played music videos and not trash tv...I miss those days.

  • @epic96 No shit now they got all this drama bullshit they said our music was destroying the youth but hey sixteen and pregnant is a good show to put on the air F*%$ that id like to beat everyone that got shit like that on tv

  • @epic96 me too

  • @epic96 plus mtv now if u don't have mtv2 u dont get music videos sad how they were all about not selling out now look who is selling out

  • @epic96 VH1 and MTV both. The good days.

  • @epic96 I wasn't even alive in those days, and I miss them. Now all we have is Jersey Shore and MTV Cribs. I weep for our generation. ):

  • i know wot ya mean buddy, me too

  • i love this song oahahaha

  • i love you aj.. uncle for life :p

  • Brian Vander Ark wrote the song in 1991 about the guilt he felt from his ex-girlfriend having an abortion. The line, "stoppin' baby's breath and a shoe full of rice" refers to the marriage that would not happen between the two despite the pregnancy.

  • @adcjr83 Right u are, Brother!!! Cooooool to no someone else actually gets this song!! Heh, I got married despite a pregnancy that didn't happen!!! Lost tha baby 2 months into the dealio!! Got divorce last year!!

  • Nope, it's about his ex-girlfriend getting an abortion and the guilt he feels.

  • one of the best adult contemporary songs of the'90

  • great 90's song!!!!

  • this is awsome

  • I Actually had to go through this , this morning

  • the meaning of the song? Like a literal translation?

  • It's actually about his ex-girlfriend getting an abortion, which was in an interview with the lead singer. The second part of the song is about a girl overdosing on Valium in a suicide attempt. Only the first part is actually true though.

  • I detained that much. I was inquiring as to what that kid was talking about.

  • Two long years ago my boyfriend-interesting sidenote: we're still together-were driving home after getting really high with an old friend, don't worry, it was just some weed, and this song came on the radio. Now, I hadn't smoked any for three years prior to this incident. For some reason, I was just totally into this song, and I remembered it as being just balls out awesome, but I didn't remember any of the words, I thought it was something about matchmen.

  • Sully Erna before God Smack....just messing

  • Comment removed

  • is it strange that this was the graduation song of my school's seniors of last year?

  • I love it when people select songs that have nice tunes and then completely miss the POINT of the lyrics.

  • tons of schools use this song for their seniors.

  • Yeah kind of wish my school would've. The bass player in this band actually went to my high school.

  • Errr. Seeing as it's about suicide... a little. Haha

  • yes its about suicide, after she has an abortion she kills herself to leave the pain

  • @skimberly2233 Are you sure ?

  • actually yes..this song is sad!

  • Hahahah yess..teen pregnancy a problem at ur school? hahah jk jk

  • I mean good :)

  • Shut the fuck up its a ood tune

  • Damn it, first I see him in an interview talking about how he wrote this song in 10 minutes so he can put some lyrics on this tune. Now, abortions. No No, it's about Martians trying to taking over Mars from the EPO.

  • Given the subject matter, this is a beautiful song. It will make this band memorable for a long time to come.

  • ok so he does sing about his girl that had an abortion. and towards the middle of the song, he sings about his friend that had the same thing with his girl except she overdosed and died. adding all the more sadness to the song. plus they run away. [took a weeks vacation].

  • the friends girl and his girl are one in the same. it was in an interview

  • it's about his gf who had an abortion

  • beautiful song

  • This song is awesome, but really sad if you listen to the lyrics. Brian i guess wrote this song about a girl he had a crush on, but i think there is a lot more to it then that.

  • this song is soo awesome.. i listen to it constantly..

  • god i love this song its great

  • fucking amazing song

gotta be one of my favs

    (:

  • best song ever, my fav

  • I haven't heard this song in so long, makes me miss the 90s so much. <3

  • same. i wish the 90s could live on forever.

  • compleatly agree. :]

  • First time i have listened to this song in a good bit, was 'the song' for me and my best friend b4 he died a decade ago, hard to listen to, but also good, love ya Stevo, Rock In Peace, the tears aren't cause of you, they are for you

  • i love this song. but i have always thought it was third eye blind... although i love both bands,, gosh i miss 90's music it was and always will be the best

  • yeah what happened to the good ol' 90's

  • Brian's stuff is, and always has been, astounding - but this is his masterpiece.

  • go go 90's :)

  • I miss the 90's.1994-1998 the 4 best years of my life.

  • i love this song... it reminds me of old times when i was dumb and foolish!! :) love it

  • brilliance

  • this song just flooded me with memories...wow

  • the picture sucks

  • great song!

  • Descendant of Corganism at Amazon

  • A beautiful and, I think, underrated song by the Verve.

  • The song was written after watching the film The Freshman starring Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick. In an interview, Vander Ark says, "At some point in our lives, we're all freshmen. We are all at that point when we think we know everything but we don't know shit".The girl in the song is based on Vander Ark's girlfriend at the time -- who really had an abortion. However, she didn't actually commit suicide like in the song, which Vander Ark said was poetic license.

  • Wow, thank you,

  • wikipedia says Brian Vander Ark wrote the song in 1991 about the guilt he felt from his ex-girlfriend having an abortion. The first line, "stopped a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice" refers to the marriage that would not happen between the two despite the pregnancy.

  • you all wrong although it may make sense that it is about abortion. it isn't

A girl,(groupie) used to follow the band everywhere. The band members used her fo sex but it was too much for the band as they were starting to get annoyed by her and practically told her to leave them alone because she fell in love with lead singer Brian Feeling upset about the ditching situation, she committed suicide through overdose on Valium The Verve Pipe were struck by the awful news an made this song

  • "cough cough" bullshit watch the video when Brian tells what the song is about Savanah kinda got it right

  • he is talking about abortion "stop a babies breath" but it happened to him and his friend his friends girlfriend did kill herself "a weeks worth and slept"

  • its awfully sad i dont believe in abortion one of the main reasons is the parent who push there children to do it they dont really understand what they are doing and how its going to affect their lives

  • I remember watching this in my freshman year of HS when it came out.

  • whats the song about btw check out my and my friends channel

  • It was written over the guilt Vander Ark felt after his girlfriend had an abortion. He had rented the Matthew Broderick movie "The Freshman" the night before and he thought it made a good title because he said we're all freshmen at one point in our lives- "We think we know everything, but we don't know sh*&."

  • GODAMNIT can anybody on youtube go without saying everything is emo!

  • Love this song. I've been listening to in A LOT lately

  • i adore this song!!

  • freshmen year starts at 20..sophmore at 30.....junior at 40.......now Im starting my senior year, Got it in the end. So will you all. Pease

  • why is it that any song that has any feeling to it..

    its labeled emo..

i mean..why cant it just be music or just a good song..

    but whatever..

    i love this song

  • i miss my brother......

  • i remember when this song came out..

it used to be the shit!!.

    its a good song!

  • it still is the shit!

  • Great song! ya no clue why... I just like it (=

  • I also don't know why I love this song...it's really the beginning of the song that gets to me...just musically..not even the lyrics

  • i love this song..

  • Even if first part of this song is about a couple dealing with unwanted pregnancy (not necessarily true), the singer is talking about DIFFERENT relationships throughout the song. Please quit hysterically making the whole song about women committing suicide because they had abortions!! Its not the only reason ppl kill themselves, or the only 'sin' ppl commit, nor is it the only reason ppl have problems in relationships. Prolifers- I respect ur opinions, but quit co-opting this entire song!

  • hey people, if anyone knows what the TRUE, CLEAR, ABSOLUTE meaning of the word emo means, i would appreciate it. i don't want to be ignaorant and say "oh it means you are emotional and you cut yourself" if thats not it, you know. someone said that the song hemmorhage by fuel is real emo, check it out if youve never heard it. incredible song if you like this. but some say that the ramones are emo music, so im confuse. i wanna know from the point of view from rockers. not miley cyrus head bangers.

  • anyone can be emo

    emo - emotional

just others feel this harder and more often than others

  • i think emo was also a genre of music..not sure though

  • emo is a bunch of things there is emo the lifestyle where you cut yourself, there is also emo the fashion sense where you where emo pink or black with stripes or skulls or hearts and there are emo songs that talk about cutting and how much there life sucks etc....

  • love it

  • i really like this song, i heard it through boyce avenue and i like this version aswell

  • Don't know why, but I really like this song

  • i love this song 5 stars

  • guys, it's not gay and it's not emo. It's just a very beautiful song from the nineties. Back then people didn't use the expression "emo", ok?

By the way... does anyone know if they ever made a video for the song ornament?

  • I think that's the name of the song anyway. The lyrics started " never really meant to volunteer, I felt the urge to stretch after a yawn and incidently raised my hand." Does anyone remember which one I'm talking about? I'd love to download it

  • pshhh... BACK IN THE DAYYY

  • Comment removed

  • Gosh this song Brings me back big time. So good.

  • you really dont know shit about the verve pipe do you?

this song is far from new, and its not emo.
