  • This song haunts me...don't know why... maybe I was a whaler in a past life

  • Last minute of this song = pure bliss

  • this...is so gorgeous. one of their best songs.

  • this songs too good to be true

  • I absolutely love this song. It's a bit crazy too that a few tracks back is a song that goes...

there's *BOOM* TRUTH BENEATH THE FLOORBOARDS...

  • I'd say Thrice "hit it big" enough and has received all the recognition they need. They're an internationally touring act that has released multiple albums on well-known labels, they're awesome live and in the studio, they have a large, loyal fanbase, and they continue to teach good principles through their music. What defines success as a rock band if this does not?

  • @patricksallings You have to have some band member die from OD'ing. :P

  • @thisiswilson2 True - I guess they'll never make a movie called "Dustin" unless he's continually haunted by the death of a younger sibling, leaves his wife and family, constantly does drugs, and continually pursues some relationship in which he never should have had interest but does and everyone is ok with it despite previously mentioned family abandonment. It'll be called "Dustin" or "Whale the Line" or something like that.

  • @patricksallings this o:

  • one of the best thing about thrice (besides the music) is that they are making music because they love it and they don't care if they get paid or not

  • Such a gorgeous song!

  • This is beautiful.

  • Thrice makes all other band sound like nothing "to me"

  • The fact that Thrice will never win any Grammy's for their work is the biggest downfall of humanity.

  • @KyleAnstey it's b/c they are a GOOD, POSITIVE band. they never get anywhere. the music industry is fucked . . they would be corrupted before they ever hit it big. that's also why they won't. :/

  • @KyleAnstey The fact that people think that Thrice needs some award to prove that their work is good is the greatest downfall of humanity.

  • @GordonDyer I don't believe they need an award to prove their work is good. I believe they deserve an award because it is indeed already good.

  • @GordonDyer i think what hes trying to say is that most people dont appreciate spectacular music like this anymore so a grammy for thrice is out of the question

  • @KyleAnstey Why couldn't they?

  • @GodsWildfire cause lmfao and that kind of shit exists, which is apparently "good" music in the majorities eyes. not really all about talent anymore it seems, T-Pain makes much more money prolly just cause he recorded himself with a fucking autotune. i dunno what else to say, the biz sucks. and will most likely get worse, imo.

  • @GodsWildfire Because people don't listen to good music anymore. They listen to things like Lady GaGa, and LMFAO. The music industry has fallen to crap, basically.

  • The vocal harmony at the end is just amazing. Like the ocean itself was singing.

  • The vocal harmony at the end is just amazing.

  • Like a phoenix rising up from the ashes, Thrice reincarnates expert musical prowess in a time when all was thought to be lost.

  • 3 people need to die

  • love thrice

  • amazing!

    i love thrice

everything they play is just awesome

  • So many replays :0

  • this song is stunning.

  • absolutely beautiful song. it's like getting high without the drugs

  • @JuicySquirrel or u can GET HIGH then just FLIP OUT lol

  • Modern day Pink Floyd

  • @icarus212001 great analogy

  • This song is ridiculous, nothing in all their albums compares, thrice go back to doing experimental stuff, it was truly your calling. The texture is so beautiful.

  • Fuck those 2 dislikes

  • Enough with the Christian comments. Leave your religion at home.

  • @7d7e7f7 Thrice quotes the crap out f the bible so it's really tough not to, it's like not mentioning sex when listening to disco stick by lady gaga. I don't even know if they are christian but they are well studied. anyway my point was (and you'll have no idea how this was the point i was making) I think religious comments are fine if they are not invasive to anyone. but if someone does make a christian comment bash them, and when they retort call them a hypocrit :D

  • I love the water album the music captures the essence of the Ocean beautifully.

    "My daughter's eyes,

    they are two tiny seas,

    whose water will rise

and then run down her cheeks."

OMG EPIC LYRICS!! His wife and daughter being his anchor. So emotional and instrumental genius. Have you ever heard a drum beat like this?

And the harmonizing "aaaah" at the end to sound like waves of the ocean.

The most artful music ever = Thrice!!

  • This song is so perfect in every way possible. I alway' feel at peace when it play's, and the ending is just beautiful.

  • The boat and the plank.

  • i love it.

  • You like this video. Thanks for the feedback!

  • "The boat and the blade they are all that I know, the sea calls my name, and so I must go"

I'm a 27 year old grown man and this song made me break down crying. Such beautiful and emotional lyrics.

  • @kalloused hahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahhaha

  • this song made me tear up. it reminded me of the days my dad would have to leave to go overseas... he had to leave is anchors (family) ashore because the sea (marine corps) was calling him.

Father, where do you go? it's father than i can see.... when are you coming home to me?

    ahh! so sad ]:

so glad you're home for good now, daddy<33

  • Best song on II.....by far. Theyre all extraordinary.

  • I love how this whole song is in comparison to his life. He sings about the storms (tour) taking him away as his daughter cries and his wife begs him to stay, the boat and the blade (guitar and mic) are all that he knows. His anchor is ashore (his heart?) Gahh its all so good

  • @Etheridge007 they asked him about it and he said "No, it's just a poem about a Whaler and his family"

  • @Etheridge007 I see the "anchor" as a symbol for his wife and daughter

  • I wonder what Dustin is doing this exact moment.

  • Two people missed the like button. It's okay though, we'll forgive you this time... just be more careful from here on out.

  • Music like this song feels like it's ahead of the world by at least 5 years.

Gives me the creeps, like I'm peering into the future.

    Only Thrice : )

  • the heart of MAN; his love, his vocation

  • get the same kind of feelings listening to sigur ros, evokes something i can't really describe

  • Like this if you wish a big "FUCK YOU" to the 2 losers that disliked this!!!

  • the chant at 3:28 gives me goosebumps I love it

  • @Krimson390 same

  • This song made me burst into tears last night for some reason. I think I fucking love this track so much.

  • @railpressureflip That's how I felt with, Lost Continent today. Always skipped that song but today it kinda hit me. Yeah Thrice you know, they are seriously incredible.

  • @ArmyOfOne313 same here.... well said...

  • I LISTEN TO THIS SONG EVERY TIME I GO TO THE BEACH. I'VE NEVER HEARD A SONG THAT LITERALLY CAPTURES THE ESSENCE AND BEAUTY OF THE OCEAN AS THIS SONG DOES ITS SO SOOTHING, YOU FEEL AS IF YOUR ACTUALLY IN THE OCEAN BEING GENTLY ROCKED BY THE WAVES... ITS MORE THAN A SONG ITS A FEELING... AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIANCE...

  • @ArmyOfOne313 THAT WAS GENUINELY A COMPELLING COMMENT BUT THERE REALLY ISN'T ANY NEED FOR CAPS LOCK.

  • This song gives me such good imagery in my head. I love the sad, melancholy feel of the music, it fits perfectly with the lyrics. I picture like a guy way back in like Moby Dick days being drawn to his job but being torn between that and his family. I picture him waking early in the morning to leave, dark and foggy outside, his ship and crew waiting at the port in the distance. I picture the whaler standing in his doorway, contemplating what to do.

  • @liquidgordon Hell yeah and i thought i was the only one who thought that!

  • i like this! sht up

  • One of Thrice's best. Hands down.

  • this song makes me space out.

  • dude i fuckin hate this song :'(, reminds me of my dad

  • @sk83rDr3w that fucking sucks. its a good song

  • music is one of the few things we have to ourselves. this song is beautiful

  • yo, this song just liek, ... im litdennign to it, then its over and im all liek WHATTT , you knwo its so soothign it just goes by to fast :) great song !

  • shit quality

  • I love this song.

  • everytime i process this song good enough, im totally gone in this music, i am easily amazed at how talented each and every one of them are, but dustins voice is to die over. : )

  • why are people having a religious debate?

just chill and listen to the song. Which is amazing by the way.

  • I heard that the Beach Boys were their influence for this song.

  • @SaveUsBTP If anything it sounds like Steven Wilson and some Portishead.

  • amazing, beautiful song. got me through hard times.

  • but why has all of this happened before? why must we all go through this?....again. and... why is all that we know to be real.... nonexistant?.. come back... please.

  • woah man there's mad hating going on in this proximity haha.

  • oh god..this song is absolutley amazing..chilling..mm..

  • This song gives me goosebumps

    So beautiful

  • One of my favorites!

  • I saw them last night it was amazing

  • extremely jealous. they're my favorite band and i haven't seen them live yet. :l

  • I dont know why you people speak such blasphemy. Are you really so angry at God? Why would you not believe in him and/or speak against him? I dont know what brought up these arguments, but please dont speak ill of God, Jesus Christ, Christians (whom, need I remind everyone, don't claim to be sinless), or Jews. Please, just enjoy Thrices amazing music.

  • i second ricky3417's statement

  • Beautiful song, some of the best lyrics i've heard in a while.

  • Absolutely beautiful song.

  • yay i want to get in an internet fight too!

  • god fire and water are way better than earth

  • "how can I leave with my anchors ashore?"

    gaah. brilliant.

  • I'd agree with every thing said and it all is positive feedback only because you've let your heart take over your mind and it's evry SoulJahs' purpose and calling to do jus that. We are Soul and spirit and this higher elevation of music is here for all that want real Truth and peace in thier lives...wether you want to believe in God or not Thrice will make sure you are aware of the influence that brings albums and songs like these to a hunger we share for that Truth and Peace, Much Love family

  • You talk a lot of nonsense. I like the song because it sounds nice, so shut your god-hole for four minutes eleven seconds and let me enjoy my god damn music.

  • if you were real about what you said you wouldn't be paying attention to comments instead of tryin to sound hard over the computer...it's okay you can come out of the closet with your fag nonsense and give it to Christ....otherwise you shut your slander hole you fuckin emo fag...believin in God dosn't mean I cant hit back ...Your obvious fake comment has nothin to do with the song otherwise like i said you would be listening to it instead of makin a punk, literally, comment if you knowwhtapunkis

  • You started calling names.

Boo hoo, cry more, and believing in god SHOULD make you unable to hit back, because wrath is a sin, don't forget.

I don't listen to music so i can think about what they're saying, I listen to music so I don't have to think about anything, but I can still read while listening to music. You're the equivalent of someone talking during a movie. Talking about god, nonetheless, a topic which pisses me off more than anything.

    Enjoy your false religion, asshole.

  • LOL celticsain85 is such a good christian; hes attacking people and swearing and threating violence! JUST LIKE JESUS!

  • lol

  • hahahahahaha

  • i know! its terrible!

  • False?

    LOL.

    I'll just leave this here..

  • LOL

  • @caffeinato. "Believing in God should make you unable to hit back" - you're a worthless excuse for a knowledgable person. Thanks.

  • Look i am a christian as well buy your comment is terrible! your making a bad example, We are deffinetly not called to slander others!

  • @ caffeinato. if it bothers your so much, don't read comments. i'm sorry that you think this music was damned by God, by the way. :)

  • is this in 5/4? or 10/4?

  • pretty sure its 5/4. and its fucking awesome!

  • this song has to have the most meaningfull lyrics ever. it's so beautiful

  • This song just lulls me to sleep. the chords are so great! I love how they just evaporate at the end!

  • There is nothing to hate about this band...they are defenatly up in the top three for my favorite bands...

  • thrice is so ahead of their time its ridiculous.

  • @sometimesoonfan You have NO IDEA how right you are.

  • Everytime I hear it, it makes me think about how important this is. I love this song.

  • Water is my favorite Thrice album ever. It's so... straight. It's obvious that they've taken a step away from their thrashy, hardcore roots and started creating music they love. It's apparent even here, in "The Whaler". I fall asleep to the album every night. Like everyone else, the whole album brings tears to my eyes.

  • Very well said. My fav. has to be the Air Disc. But I do love this album so much. Very well composed! Great to sleep to. This is honestly one of my fav albums ever to get high to. Thrice is diffenetly one of the best bands. A band that truely can't be slapped with a label, like most people try hard to do with ever band. The best summary I think to describe Thrice is this: They write exactly what I feel and what I want to hear.

  • WELL Said. I wish more bands were like that in which they can write what they care despite what some of their "fans" might think. Like when I first heard this album I was thinking that Thrice will never top The Artist In The Ambulance, but they obviously have with this album.

  • I agree with you too... Their hardcore stuff was great.. but this is even greater... not many bands can do what they did, the whole transition thing..

it just shows how talented they are

  • I'm not afraid to admit that I have cried to this song ^_^

  • I sorta hated this song at first, but it's really grown on me and now I love it's depth, and emotion. It's very well done, especially the chorus!

  • This song makes me think of my girlfriend.

  • I love this song, this and Flame Deluge are my fave of the album(s)

Song makes me kinda wanna cry...

  • God, even to just look at the lyrics you'd think your reading a timeless poem or novel. That's true for pretty much all their songs. Whoever writes their lyrics is the best lyricist ever. Give that man/woman on oscar or something. Damn.

  • The singer, Dustin Kensrue writes all the lyrics.

  • Even better.

  • absolutly incredible

  • This song is life changing.

  • wow!

  • the ending is one of the several parts of this song that tugs my ear to listen, it's so outstanding.

  • "my daughter's eyes, they are two tiny seas, whose water will rise, and then run down her cheeks" Indredible.

  • i thought it was 'swallow her eyes' but 'whose water will rise' makes more sense, anyway, beautiful, makes me want to cry, which is very unusual for me :S

  • it actually makes you feel like you're in the ocean...

  • this is my #1 favorite song

  • Thrice owns i love this song and Open Water.

  • guitar hero you put that beautifuly

  • Thank you. :-)

  • ich lieb :D

  • i love this song it reminds me of my kids and wife

  • favorite. song.

  • ...epic

  • is this their new album???

  • yeah. its amazing, no?

  • hell yeah.. Thrice changed so much .. and still so impressive

  • You can feel this song...it's more than listening...it's an experience...

    ...really touches the heart.

  • i cant wait for earth and air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the chant at the end gives me goosebumps every time

    great song great band

  • All thrice songs give me the goosebumps, but this song......man.

  • One of the most beautiful music & lyrics that I've ever heard.

Thanks for the amazing job, guys!!

    Peace.

  • Cool! Thrice gets getting better and better! Can't believe thay broke away from island records for vagrant records

  • to be honest thrice is a good band but i like there old stuff more such as the artist in the ambulance and stare at the sun. it just had a better tempo to it, they are not the same rock band they used to be and they are using electronic beats instead. its just not the same thrice that mad them popular

  • made*

  • If you hasn't noticed, this is a concept album. This is also the water ep which is slower than fiya.

  • i agree that the old thrice was really good, but their new record really proves that being musicians isn't only about popularity and money... and if you're someone who is REALLY into music, you must admit that their new stuff is simply genius

  • Completely agree with that The Alchemy Index is just amazing.

  • Right on

  • Dallas green said it best when the band was asked when they would be going back to the roots of the first cd, He said never because never will they feel or be able to capture what they did at that point in their lives where they wrote that album. So the everchanging process of thrice is what makes them popular and so respected. The changes are what we should anticipate most because we have such respect for the original presentations

  • oh god...here we go again with the people that like the old stuff better........nobody cares. straight up.

  • fantastic! (:

  • Thrice is just awesome, it's differente from rest of bands (i havent listened all bands in world) but their style is unique, not same punk or hxc stuff, that sounds equal, lol.

  • the ending is incredible, the harmonies on their own leave you stunned :D, this and lost continent are fantastic, just brilliant! i love the little piano riff after 'will you be coming home to me', aargh i love it! and yes the oooooh at the end isn't particularly special but it is more about the mood i think, it leaves you calm and feeling like you are submerged in water. Great song, thrice!

  • now favorite thrice song next to for miles

  • i'm glad i'm not the only one out there that ate up for miles like me. song's bloody breathtaking

  • i just saw them play it live on Wednesday, best concert that i've been to yet

  • all the fire tracks are awesome. digital sea and open water are pretty good. the whaler and kings upon the main are awesome, but i dont see how people like how the whaler ends. i would like it with more climactic music than "ooooooh ooooooooooh" over and over again. heck, that isnt even that bad when there's music playing in the background but they decide to cut the background music off and just leave the weird oooooing to itself ;_;

and lost continent is just awful.

  • I love the ending =O

And caleb...I suggest you listen a few more times because many of the tracks are great.

  • This song is probably the only song on either of the albums worth listening to. Sad, I had such high hopes for this project.
