I had been under the impression that Hebrews was written sometime after the Apostolic Age and most likely a pious forgery drafted late in the 2nd century. As it turns out, Clement of Rome in his letter to the Corinthians cites the Epsitle to the Hebrews about a dozen times. Now, that isn't perfect proof of Pauline authorship, but it does place the Bk of Hebrews in the last two decades of the 1st century rather than in the late half of the 2nd.
Hello PolishAbinadi---You have good video production skills. I agree with much of what you claim-- but disagree with others. Still I made this video one of my favorites. Good Job -Good Production.
4nticasp3r - No verse in the Bible contradicts any LDS doctrine. Only some people's interpretation of the Bible might.
BTW - Joseph Smith restored some doctrines that were lost since the world rejected (and killed) Jesus' apostles. Naturally - some of those things will sound like they are new, but they are in perfect harmony with the ancient revelations included in the Bible.
Exodus314IAM - "where in the Bible does God justify Temple Marrage and Polygamy?"
*I don't think you read my comment carefully. I said: "No verse in the Bible contradicts any LDS doctrine." and "Joseph Smith restored some doctrines that were lost since the world rejected (and killed) Jesus' apostles." What that means is that I don't have to prove any LDS doctrines by the Bible, but you have to prove that any of them are CONTRADICTED by the Bible (and you cannot do it).
Exodus314IAM - "Killed his aposles? so who killed John?"
*Sorry, I wasn't there so I didn't have the chance to check the IDs of those who killed most of the ancient apostles or ask for their names. They probably painted their faces in black and came at night - just like those cowards who murdered the prophet Joseph Smith and his two brothers.
John was sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos. He wrote his prophetic book of Revelation on Patmos. Then apostle John was later freed and returned to what is now modern-day Turkey. He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully.
Exodus314IAM - I am happy to see that we do agree on some points. So, you are saying that all apostles except one were killed. That was part of my point - they were rejected and killed.
You ask: "So when was the word lost?" Fortunately not everything was lost. Many true doctrines survived, because they were kept in the Bible. But - after the apostles were gone - Christians no longer were led by Jesus through revelation and so his Church was gone and and some precious doctrines lost.
Exodus314IAM - "How can you say the word was lost?"
*I don't think I ever said that "the word was lost". I said that some doctrines were lost, etc.
*One of the truths that was lost is the doctrine of man's free agency. God restored the truth in our days. God gave us free agency and He respects it. If we accept his word - we are blessed, but if we reject it - He doesn't force it on us. That's all I am saying.
"free agency" aka free will is not lost in the Bible, read Acts 7:51, Deuteronomy 11:26-28 & Matthew 23:37. Keep in mind God is loving (not all-loving) 1 John 4:16 & Exodus 20:6. Everyone will be judged after they die Revelation 20:11-15.
Exodus314IAM - ""free agency" aka free will is not lost in the Bible"
*Apparently the concept is lost to at least some Christians. For example - you seem to think that even if people reject God's true faith - He should still force it on them, because He has promised that He will never leave them.
*Anybody who says: How could God allow apostasy?! is actually saying that God doesn't respect our free will.
There is Apostasy all the time. Go to the Middle east and see people killed for the truth. But God is always there and he will make something that seems so bad, not so bad. Of course you cannot see it untell you look at how much worse it could have been.
..sorry but ou are referring to a DIFFERENT Jesus....Unlike mormonism christianity NEVER taught that jesus and lucifer were "spirit-brothers" (God had only ONE only-begotten Son (John 1:14)...unlike mormonism Christianity NEVER taught that some sins were not covered by the blood of Christ( blood atonement) and unlike mormonism it NEVER distorted and isolated old testament verses to justify adultery (polygamy) or racism against blacks...
dimtry19 - Your comment is a sad reminder that the world has long ways to go before wars, lies, hate, intolerance cease and are replaced with respect, mutual understanding and love.
..EVERYTHING i state is verifiable in YOUR owmn mormon scriptures, including the history of racism of your church against blacks in my previous comments ..you can believe in whatever you want but if you are going to spread false doctrines about Christ you can expect me and thousands of faithful christians who believe in the Bible ALONE to challenge and expose you...you need to educate yourself about what your mormon founders REALLY taught before you volunter to spread their poison.....
dimtry19 - Try repeating yourself a few million times and you will still be saying lies, not truth. The problem with confused people like you is that a decent person won't come down to your level and list all the Popes and Patriarchs who were... less than decent or number of people murdered as a result of their ... less than inspired leadership, etc. so - we will just let you be angry for awhile and hope you will soon leave. Eventually you will go away and peace will return.
Wow. All that to say just because the Bible doesn't say there isn't a need for the continued Aaronic preisthood that's no reason there couldn't be. I'm sorry Exodus, I can't say things as kindly as you do. This is brainwashing material in the order of Jim Jones, just without the mixed drinks. If Jesus is the high priest then I don't really think I need a human priest, catholic or mormon. The only interceding body is Christ. Not men or organizations.
newtzilla - Thanks for sharing your opinion about this. I just want to clear up one thing: I am not arguing here that just because the Bible doesn't say that we don't need the A. priest. - it means that might need it.
The reason why I believe that we do need the priesthood today is because I have seen it in action. I have been blessed by it and I have used it to bless others.
The only argument of this video is that some scriptures might be understood in different ways and here is how I see it.
Greg, this video is very well done, I can see you spent alot of thought in making it. It also shows me how the Mormon way is, it is very close to Christianity, I never doubted that. Mormons do believe they are following the God of the Bible, I know this too. They do not however follow it correctly. If you could take away Joseph Smith and his writings, you would be 100% correct. But I know you cannot, he is who you follow!
"If you could take away Joseph Smith and his writings, you would be 100% correct."
*Notice that this is exactly the argument that the early apostles had to constantly fight. People also told them: "We wish you could just stop telling us about the new revelations and be contend with Moses and other ancient prophets..."
"You can say no but deep down you know its true."
*Exodus - I won't tell you what you know deep down because it would be pretty arrogant of me.
I love this video. Very well done. It is done in a spirit of kindness and tolerance. And yet it boldly declares the truth. Thank you for your wonderful example.
4. This is exactly why WE as believers in Christ should ONLY trust the Bible. You have been taught many non-Biblical stories and concepts that you so vehemently argue.
You now echo exactly what you were taught despite the Bible's clarity. Its like you don't want to disagree with your LDS church, when in fact you should be more careful not to disagree with the Bible, but your agruements to that are the INTERPRETATION and AUTHORITY stances, which are cleaver but baseless. Good luck. God Bless.
"This is exactly why WE as believers in Christ should ONLY trust the Bible." - I would agree with you on this but there is only one problem - you won't find this doctrine anywhere in the Bible. In order to accept this doctrine - you will have to accept some extra-biblical revelation. Unless you admit that you trust 1. the Bible and 2. this one more revelation that says that we should only trust the Bible....
"You now echo exactly what you were taught..." - Did you watch the video? This is exactly the point I am making in the first half of it. 8O)
"...despite the Bible's clarity..." - If the Bible can be interpreted only in your way - why most Christian churches in the world disagree with you?
"...you should be more careful not to disagree with the Bible" - you mean "your understanding of the Bible"? If so - with all due respect - who gave you the authority to interpret script.? 2 Pet. 1:20
3. What was the role of the priests? What was the main thing they did on behave of Israel? They performed the sacrafices and offerings. For what? For sin. To make atonement for sin.
So if that was their role, yet the Bible states that they were weak and unprofitable (Heb 7:18) to the point where JESUS Himself had to step in and REPLACE them, what makes you think they are still needed? Jesus already did it! What more can they add? What can they do in their weakness and unprofitableness?
The priests exercised their office mainly at the altar by offering the sacrifices and above all the incense (Num. 16:40; Num. 18:2-3,5,7; Deut.33:10), but also by teaching the people the law (Deut. 33:10; Lev. 10:10,11; Mal. 2:7), by communicating to them the divine will (Num. 27:21), and by blessing them in the name of the Lord (Num. 6:22-27).
1.Christopher, please read Matt.17:5(also Luke 9:28-36). What does Jesus say? What has He done? He has FULFILLED the prophets and the law. Now what does fulfilled mean?
2.Jesus did all the things you just described. Not with ritauls or ceremonies but with real action, love and authority. He sacraficed Himself, He made intercession for man, He taught things above the law (but I tell you), He communicated God's will and blessed mankind- thereby FULFILLING the priesthood and prophethood.
I don't disagree that Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses. He also fulfilled the OT prophecies that He would come.
However, even after Jesus died, there were still prophets. The apostles, to whom Jesus ordained with priesthood power and authority, also received prophecies. Paul stated that he did and of course we know that John the Revelator did as well. Prophets continued to communicate God's will through revelation.
2. In reading Hebrews one can see that the New Covenant took the actions and ceremonies regarding SIN ATONEMENT out of man's hands and placed it solely in Jesus'. The 'unprofitable' priesthood was made perfect in Jesus. HE was now the High Priest because...... NO ONE ELSE MADE IT EFFICTIVE! Don't you see? After Jesus, there was no need for an Arronic(LEVITICAL)priesthood because the *ONE* MELCHIZEDEK PRIEST came-JESUS CAME!!!
1. Polish, I see that you have a decent understanding of Hebrews. I see that you understand that the New Covenanent has replaed the old. However I also see that despite reading Hebrews you are still grasping, clining to your non-Biblical beliefs. At 7:46 you showed that you understood the purpose and role Christ plays in our salvation. HOWEVER you maintain that we must go through a priesthood and an established heirarchy of men to obtain full salvation. You took 1 step forward and 2 steps back.
1. My "non-Biblical beliefs" are in harmony with the Bible, but not with some of your beliefs. Like I have told you before - we believe in EVERYTHING that God has ever revealed - not just up until 2nd Century A.D. (interpreted by unauthorized individuals).
*I think the NT shows that "we must go through a priesthood". Otherwise why would Jesus send Peter, John, Paul and others? Why would He say: "He that receiveth you receiveth me"(Matt. 10:40)?
PolishAbinadi, wow, what a beautiful message and done in such a loving, intelligent thoughtful way. Well - you won't find this doctrine in Hebrews or anywhere in the Bible. This is simply one of many possible interpretations of a few verses.
Paul makes it clear that there is no need for animal sacrifices, but that was one of many responsibilities of the priests of Aaron.
