Great video! Don't like the milky white or blue barrels, that are available, sitting on the side of your house? We have a solution for that! Follow us, Rain Barrel Apparel, on Facebook and Twitter. Don't let unfashionable barrels stop you from conserving. Harvesting Water Never Looked So Good!
Great vid. I like the basket. Does it really work for mosquitoes though? Seems like the holes in the basket might not be small enough... One other question, I'm thinking of getting a large water tank for rainwater harvesting, how big do you think I would need for about a 500 sq ft garden? A farmer I know suggested 2500 gallons but that seems like a lot, any comment?
I for 20 years have collected and jumped up to stock tanks covered for kid and pet protection. 1,100 gallons and a single inch of rain off my roof does it.
Ya take it to the car wash so the chemicals can go down the drain, then to the storm tunnels, then down to the creeks, then to the river, and finally to the lakes. Very nice. LOL
Scoobysnaxx2, Smoke another doobie and take out the trash, your mother is getting mad. "This guy is doing"? This guy is misleading people about the reality of rainwater. I bet you know nothing about rainwater, so please visit the ARCSA web site, do you some reading,(that's a joke because it is clear you have California envy, and are probably from some red state), then send me another hateful message.
So would you suggest we continue to deluge our gardens with fluoride, chlorine, trihalomethanes, etc, and so-forth, that come from our city-water? Are you actually claiming the poison which comes from the fluoride-pushers is better than rainwater?
This type of barrel is not enough water to make a difference. In california 750 gallons of water cost between 5-7 dollars depending (time of year, amount used during that billing period). Plus what is this guy selling, if I have to buy all of the attachments why do I need this guy? There are many free resources that give this information away. Think cistern, thousands of gallon cistern. just saying.
any amount makes a difference fucktardsam, you just keep your dumb ass in California and we will be good, this guy is doing and your not so STFU and have a great day.
p.s. if you live in the Atlanta area Advanced Drum is a good source for barrels. If you tell them your purpose they will give you an unwashed food grade 55 gal barrel for $25 or $130 for 280 gal as of Sept 08. they don't want there cleaning chemicals to contaminate the barrel
make sure you are using "food grade barrels. I.E. no chemicals. no matter how well you wash it heavy detergents will contaminate the water in the berrel for a long time to come.
make sure the overflow is as large as the entrance. otherwise you get water going every where during a deluge.
very good video. I have a couple suggestions. I put my pool screening over the downspout and kind of make a sock above the hole in the barrel to stop debris, twigs, bird droppings and mosquitos. I also bungee cord a screen over the hole, for the same reasons. The more filters the better quality of water, is my thinking on this, and the less chance of breeding mosquitos. I just use the plumbers tape and an O-ring for the spigots and have few leaks. Thanks.
Thank you Thank you Thank you. You have made it so much easier for me to understand how to actually put the rain barrel together. I am a woman and not to familiar with all the dudads & gadgets... but I am going to the hardware store TODAY and put this together... I have about 6 positions around my home that produces gallon and gallons of water and I will be using them all. Once again... thanks for posting this video.... I love you!
That seems to be the catch 22 is finding the connector parts..I always seem to find some but not all of them. Even Lowes has Rain barrel plans on their website but they lists parts (connector parts) that they don't even carry!!
YOu are correct about the storm. In a strong storm, even the downspouts can't carry away the water quickly enough. How big is big enough? As for the junk, do you mean the sediment from the soap or the leaves from the roof.
What about the junk that can not get out of the bottom of the tank? If you have a huge storm will the barrel just overflow next to the house if the little hose can not carry the overflow away fast enough?
Drilled the catch drain on the wrong side of the barrel. The bung caps are already threaded so you can thread your drain valve.

1. Why do you need a bulkhead? Use a tapered bib and it will create a tighter seal and not cost you the added money of a bulkhead.
2. Where you drilled the overflow opening, you are probably loosing 5-6 gallons of usable water. (put it right at the top!)

What kind of drill bit did you use? I try using a high speed steel drill bit, but it didn't make a hole.

There is an easier way:
When looking for barrels look for the ones with the bunghole screws that have a plastic screw inside the larger screw.
Remove the smaller screw and your spigot will thread right into it.
Flip the barrel upside down and cut your entry hole in the bottom.
Now put an overflow in the side and you are done.
