Calling John Brown a terrorist from our perspective, nearly 150 years after the raid, is narrow minded. He was a hero to many during that time frame. This song was used as a marching hymn by the Northern soldiers who fought and died to ensure that the Union, dedicated to the proposition that ALL men were created equal, would endure. Brown wasn't the terrorist. Rather it was those supporting the foul institution of slavery that were terrorizing the spirit of the American republic.
@Qazaq lmao even if he didnt kill them in front of their families hes still a terrible human. He massacred even minor slaveholding families all across souther kansas. If you think slavery is wrong, murder is much worse, bigot.
@liberatordude1988 if you read the history, John Brown from the Massachusetts regiment was made fun of because of John Brown the abolitionist. so NO, it is not wrong John Brown
John Brown was the Scott Roeder/ Bill Ayers of his day. His cause was noble but his actions were misguided to say the least. People like him hurt their own causes.
wrong. take a look at his actions and what they truely did. he is not a hero but not a monster he is a man in his time that acted with what he had around him
@flashfan2 go fuck a horse. he knew the only way that blacks were going to be free would have to be through war. he fought to the death for the freedom of EVERYBODY. saying he is a monster is like saying that your god is a asshole.
Great song, but do they forget that although John Brown tried to rally them to freedom, they ignored him? He pretty much failed miserably because no slaves would join him.
Thanks for posting. I am researching the versions of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and it is nice to hear them all done by nice singers such as this ^__^
Too bad Juarês gets the end of my favorite stanza (0:43-1:00) wrong:
The stars above in heaven they are looking kindly down
The stars above in heaven they are looking kindly down
The stars above in heaven they are looking kindly down
Upon the grave of old John Brown

John Brown murdered innocent (non slave holding) men in front of their families. He was a murderer, not a hero. I love this song.

John Brown was the greatest American hero, and fuck anyone who still thinks of him as "controversial". He died so that men may be free.

Great song, the melody and wording makes a good combination to something I would otherwise fail to see any nice hymn to.

beautifully done
the Battle hymn of the republic is derived from this song
and they stole the freedom theme from the abolitionists
Canadians are proud to have been apart of the under ground railroad and the abolitionists that attacked Harpers ferry.
nicely done
John brown's body is a molding in the ground but his truth goes marching on.
