This Joe Werner might be Ben Hayes. He had the role before Ed Zimmermann who played Joe from 1967-1972. When Ed died tragically from a massive heart attack in 1972, the role was played by Anthony Call.
I did not start watching until 1969. My favorite characters were Joe and Sara.

I did know that, already. I was just making comment about how Millette Alexander's Sara might not have wanted to be with Hayes' Joe. I could see Ed and Anthony's Joe with Sara, and we did. BTW, Joe didn't die in 1972, he died in July 1976 (off-camera, Call last played the role sometime in June 1976 shortly after Leslie Jackson Bauer Norris Bauer died on the operating table at Cedars after Stan Jeffers plowed his car into her at her & Mike's house). Joe was in India when he died.
I do remember that Joe's death in 1976 was one of my 1st really clear memories of GL (although I started watching the show sometime in fall of 1975 when I was 12 years old). I remember phone call Sara took from country of India (where Joe had gone to help the poor, although Sara suspected it was because his former love interest Leslie's untimely death on the operating table that Joe was manning -- I remember some of the flashbacks to the bedroom talk of Sara & Joe about Joe going to India).
My apologies for not being clearer. The actor Ed Zimmermann passed away from a heart attack in 1972. I know the character Joe passed away also from a heart attack but as you said in 1976 off camera.
I agree absolutely that it is hard to imagine Sara played by Millette being interested in Joe as played by Ben Hayes -- no offense to him. This is first I've seen Ben in the role. Joe was played better by Ed and then Anthony. Great loss of Ed--he wrote a wonderful book Love in the Afternoon.
Is this the actor who played Ed in the 90s after Peter Simon left?

@Marinaskye
Robert Gentry played Ed from 1966-69 and again briefly in 1997, during one of Peter Simon's absences.

I can't imagine this Dr. Joe Werner ever to have been involved, let alone married to Dr. Sara McIntyre, at least as played by Millette Alexander.
