Thank you so much for this ... I was given a whistle for Christmas 2010 and have found this series of tutorials wonderful. Working on my rolls and nearly have the hang of it and will attempt this lesson hopefully soon. Thanks again and God Bless.
thanks for your lessons! I already knew how to play a 'normal' flute, so the first viedos were kinda easy for me. This one however is very hard! I'll keep practising and hopefully I finally manage to make the song with the new technique! For now I'm already glad, when I manage to play the song right!:D Grtz from the Netherlands!
I'm actually getting it!!!!!!!! Thank you! I'm so excited! I want to be a worship leader and I'd really like the sound to be irish and this just helps so so much!
this is so hard to follow along on the notes, especially the extra high notes. is there a video explaining that upper octave? whats the site for reading the notes?
I have a Tony Dixon whistle, which i am very content with. I've practice this song so long, but it's stil very hard for me getting the high notes sound right. I just don't blow hard enough then.
I have a cheapie, red "Mel Bay by Clarke" whistle (bought it for my kids' schooling), and up til now it's done pretty well in the higher range; but lately, it's not playing those high notes...any whistlers out there have a fix? It's messing with my groove and I'd really love to continue practicing Lesson Eight. :)
How long do you think it should take me to get to this level of playing if im practicing about 30mins to an hour a day? These lessons have been so helpful :)
@MegaTheKiwi>>> Actually the first lessons are pretty simple and you'll be able to get it easily, I think. I've never practiced before, and I reached lesson 7 in 2 weeks, about 1h a day.
Personally I like when my whistles get a "broken in" look around the holes from playing them. You could consider it a mark of honor that you have played enough to be wearing away the finish.
Thanks to your videos, I started playing the tin whistle about two weeks ago and love it. Lesson eight is a little tricky. I play about 2 hours a day. You are an excellent teacher.Thank you, Ryan Duns!
Yup, i found it a HUGE jump indeed, and this is where I stopped to follow you months ago. But I improved since then, so when I'll back for the vacations I'll give this a try.
My name is Sean and Im from Dublin.First of all thanks for getting me this far.Never thought I could.Second,I noticed you changed Whistle's for this one.Whats the name of this whistle?

Errr. I just read the intro to that book on line. On second thoughts, I think you must have directed that recommendation to someone specific. Hahha.

Mr. Duns how do i clean/polish my tin whistle?
It's getting dark next to the holes and within is getting kind of golden and i don't know what to do.
Maybe is because i live in Brazil and is pretty hot here besides I sweat on my hands.
It is very difucult see a tin whistle in my country and im spreading this in my social circle =).
I appreciate your lessons, thanks a lot.

These lessons are fantastic! Though this one has got me squeaking quite a bit. Oh well, practice makes perfect or at least earns you a cold one.

Is "the reel" the name of a song, or is it just a term used in Irish tin whistle playing?
Eirelav111 4 years ago
The reel is a type of tune - 4/4 time. Jigs are 6/8, and slip jigs are 9/8.
RyanDunsSJ 4 years ago
Oh, I see. That's pretty much what I figured. Thanks!
