Closest pass is 0.142 AU = approx 18 x the distance from earth to the Moon. The oject Apophis is quite small and therefore may only cause a tiny gravitational blip as it passes.
the apophis is actuall ment to come near us in april 2026 at that day we'll have around a 3 in 100 chance of it entering our orbit and creating a massive disaster
i dont know what to belive 2012 or 2036? this is just all fucked up nothing will hapend everyone tries to make us worry all our fucking life so we cant live life shit heads
people have tendency to visualize what would movie portray. But in real entrance to the Earth atmosphere would be like a very bright burning light. Its impact will devastate area of 1000-1500 miles. But the biggest damage will result not from ground zero but from wave of vibration which will at last bring down the slope of volcano island La Palma. Far regions of coastal area of Eastern American continents, exactly. Supersonic wave will reach NY within 7 hours. Height will be 100 meters.
I mean (sorry ) Tsumani wave originated from island La Palma will hit East Coast of Americas. It can end the life of 20-25 million people in USA, only. Imagine 30 million people evacute same time since Supersonic wave is approaching anouncement aired. First 2 hours seismologist will linger about effect loosing precious time. 5 hours left people will start panic. Anybody who left behind within 20 miles have sure fate coming. Traffic is dead slow. Who can run to mountain should run. Wave 100 meter
The only time you would see a collision between the two is when the Light blue line turns to dark blue at the exact same time as intersecting earths orbital path. When you watch this and follow the date on April 13 2029 they actually do meet and so do the planets (however it will still miss us by 1000's on km)
Its an orbit simulator and is really fun to watch i have it bookmarked on my other cpu, i dunno why he showed this part of the orbit. If you look at the asteroids orbit it follows a light blue line and dark blue, Light blue represents when its plane is abover earths orbit and dark blue for below. It looks like the 2 orbits meet but if you tilt it, you see at that intersection, the asteroid is well below earths orbit (passing underneath us).
Additional observations of the trajectory of Apophis revealed the keyhole would likely be missed and on August 5, 2006 Apophis was lowered to a Level 0 on the Torino Scale. As of October 19, 2006, the impact probability for April 13, 2036, was calculated as 1 in 45,000. An additional impact date in 2037 was also identified; the impact probability for that encounter was calculated as 1 in 12.3 million.
sorry people this one sizewise only 350-400 meters. Will be total destruction where it fell but not in entire world. Impact of 500 miles total death and 3000 miles of ruins only. 5500 miles of broken windows, and worldwide landslides and tsunami all over oceans and seas, only. Oh yeah, whoever can see the object at impact will go blind and worst degree of burns. 15 years of lasting economic misery. But will recover fast due to less populations on earth. Those will live happier sometime after.
Okay, I'm sure scientists will do their best to figure out a way to prevent us form being wiped away from Planet Earth, But, in any case, if this more than 10-kms big asteroid crushes on earth, where will that be? That's the key point. Because if it its the more than 70% water part of our planet, giant waves will rise and where people will be, they will die in 1 second and it'll be a blast. If it hits earth instead, thinsg will get seriously terrible cuz there will be debris, fires etc.
in any case, it would mean a serious amount of catastrophes on the globe but not total extinction like they make us believe with those CGI armageddon-related videos here on youtube. Those asteroids in the simulation are big like planets. This one in 2036 is only about 10 kms.
That aint quite true. Apophis is not 10km in diameter. Its 300m. In order for a asteroid to cause global damage, it would need to be 3-4km in diameter. The one that hit us 65million years ago, was 15km. Apophis is able to destroy a little country or a big city. It wont cause any global damage.
tristar1215 the terino scale doesnt exist either, I'll think youll find its the TORINO SCALE. Learn how to spell before trying to educate us you muppet.
no, and nope. one, the gravitational pull is still a little smaller that what you think. it looks ver close on this video but it'll be kilometers away, not alot but enough to avoid the gravitational pull. there will always be a risk. but if everything stays on course, we'll just have a nice night show. by the way, it's an asteroid, not a comet
Thanks, but.. If that was a real map of the solar system I think the earth would be larger and the ASTEROID* would maybe hit earth? And "kilometers away" doesn't sound safe.
ok do u guys no what the terino scale is well its a scale with diferent levels /colours for how dangerouse the chance of something hitting anyways apophis was given a level 2 in 2004 apophis now is a zero on the terino scale is will miss us also planet x does not exist
yeah it's 270m large and it has the power of 29.6 of the strongest nuclear weapons (zar-bomb from Russia) but the impact risk is about 0.0022% - 0.0045% so don't cry!
Nibiru is not an asteroid u numbnut ... its a planet ... or a dwarf star or whatever they want to call it ...

Well we saw Hiroshima, it just boomed ones= THEORY WAS WRONG !!! Same here ... Theories are guesses ...
Ok quick question. lets say in 2036 it misses us. *yay* make it national "wow close one dude" day. but would it boomerang back at us a third time. since our gravity would still be pulling it. So if we dont destroy it technically wont it hit us sooner or later. getting closer and closer. unless acted upon by another force.
actually ionavalanche, the will predict if it will hit earth or not in 2026. It will definitely miss earth in 2029, but if it will HIT earth in 2036, nobody knows.

Apophis can be studied and planned for. Theres a chance it can be avoided. Its not like we're worrying about things like what if i get run over by a drunken driver.
Yeah thats fine - I would like scientists to do just that. My point is the all the videos on here about Apophis and the world ending in 2012 because of the Mayan calender and stuff like that - there is just too much mass panic about stuff like this. As I said, the average person (not the scientists-that their job) needs to just relax a little and stop worrying about whats going to happen years from now, and enjoy today because when it comes down to it they wont be able to do anything about it.
so many people get wrapped up in these doom and gloom stories. If its gonna happen theres not a lot you can do about it. My advice; go out and enjoy yourself and stop waiting for the sky to fall in, chicken licken
We are semi more screwed now by our own doing. A German 13 year old schoolboy (Smarter than all of Nasa) proved that there is a 1 in 450 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth by 2036 on its second pass. Not 1 in 45,000 as previously predicted.
Fondare good point. in 2880 there will be a asteroid to hit earth exactly on March 16th. It is in almost exact rotation as the earth to the sun. Of course there is only a 1 and 300 chance unlike that 1 and 41,000 chance.
First: These are just measurements done nearly 800 years before the event. NASA keeps a good estimate on stuff, but when you are calculating stuff THIS early, the uncertanity region is REALLY LIKELY to be as wide as to have a chance of 1 in 300.
Second: IF human race survives until 2880 (Which, well, I can't quite imagine humanity on 2880), I could bet that they could deflect an asteroid with the blink of an eye. Thing about it, we can do it now.
listen kids ,tha orbit of this thing may change in 20 years who knows..well send chuck noris up in a spaceship 2 sort it out lol...besides i hav a very big peni s
First designated 2004 MN4, 99942 Apophis belongs to the Aten asteroids group, and orbits the Sun in 323 days. Apophis is only 400 meters long, this is large and dangerous but no so large as shown in this video! Its path will bring it across Earth's orbit twice in 2029 and 2036 later this century. The 2029 pass will deviate the orbit due to Earth's gravity and new calculations will be needed to determine the 2036 passage...
Asteroid hitting the Earth? Not a chance, Chuck Noris will back hand it into oblivion! Just kidding, i heard on tv years ago that even a dust cloud could move an asteroid.
Keep on waiting for an asteroid to hit the Earth...we are all going to get old and die until that unlikely day!..because that's the truth we have to live get old and die one after one....not all together...egoists! ;)
There is this asteriod named Apophis and it is STILL considered a 'near earth object'. In 2029 with the projected path of it, it will come so close to the Earth that it will dip below our communication satilite and MISS us..But if it hits a 'keyhole' (where the earth's gravity is) there is a 1 in 45,000 chance it will hit us in 2036. The odds are highly in our favor. Besides this asteroid WILL NOT CAUSE EXTINCTION!
Im getting a little confused hear watching all these apophis videos. Is the darn thing "predicted" to hit us in 2029 or 2036? I heard it was going to "skim" PAST us, between earth and our satalites in 2029, and come back around for 2036 and strike? Something like that... I guess no one really knows fact right now...
guys comon lets not think about global warming big rocks hitting us lets just live life to full we are all gonna die one day why not be it right now or in howver long lets just kick ass if there is aliens
naw some ppl hundreds of thousands of miles away will likely die of tidal waves, radiation, dust storms, and things like that but not everyone will die from directly from the impact, and i say the tidal waves will be no bigger than 2-8 times the size of the empire state building
hes showing first the year 2029 when Apophis misses, 7 years later it will come again and it WILL hit the earth several hundreds of sientests have prooven this.
Rasmus55: There is a 1 in 45,000 chance that Apophis will pass through a "graviational keyhole" during its near-earth encounter in 2029, and that will adjust its orbit to hit the earth 7 years later. But the "keyhole" is no more than 400 meters across, and recent observations have led astronomers to classify it as a class 0 on the Torino scale. If it passes through a keyhole, it will hit the earth in 2036. But it's HIGHLY unlikely it will do so.
omg we dont know each other, you probably live in america? I live in scotland, so obviosuly iv never seen your mum, I was taking the piss, this argument could go on forever but i really cant be bothered so Il shut up cos Im sick of getting emails...I just have to say one thing tho, I have a girlfriend and I get laid most night ;) haha
well it's about time that the world ends ,, people u still have few years before u are judged so take this opportunity to be good with each other ... and ask for murcy .. anyway ,,,everything is possible ... as for me i consider that apophis is not gona hit the earth after 30 yrs from now the earth wont be in same gravitty center so it wont hit us.. but everything is possible
well it's about time that the world ends ,, people u still have few years before u are judged so take this opportunity to be good with each other ... and ask for murcy .. anyway ,,,everything is possible ...
what i dont understand is .... has appophis been orbiting the sun for a long time? and if so how come we are just noticing it now? and by the looks of it if it has been orbiting the sun for a long time judgeing by its path it will always interfere with the earths orbit
it doesnt matter because the world is gonna end in 2012 its called the apocalypse. where the sun is gonna have storms then that will cause earthquakes hurricanes volcano eruptions you name it. it was even a non fiction movie and a book.
We can knock it of course anyway.

not true! both nasa and esa have refuted his calculations. I just read about it about 5 minutes ago on yahoo.com

wait for 792 years, then there is a something you can call a RISK, (Asteroid (29075) 1950 DA)
fondare 3 years ago
Fondare good point. in 2880 there will be a asteroid to hit earth exactly on March 16th. It is in almost exact rotation as the earth to the sun. Of course there is only a 1 and 300 chance unlike that 1 and 41,000 chance.
flREandRAln 3 years ago
We must consider two things.
Thing about it, we can do it now.

listen kids ,tha orbit of this thing may change in 20 years who knows..well send chuck noris up in a spaceship 2 sort it out lol...besides i hav a very big peni s
oldscoto 3 years ago
First designated 2004 MN4, 99942 Apophis belongs to the Aten asteroids group, and orbits the Sun in 323 days. Apophis is only 400 meters long, this is large and dangerous but no so large as shown in this video! Its path will bring it across Earth's orbit twice in 2029 and 2036 later this century. The 2029 pass will deviate the orbit due to Earth's gravity and new calculations will be needed to determine the 2036 passage...

hello all - ps3forever360nvr - your way wrong the chances for an impact to planet earth is 1 to 40,000

I thought it was a 1 in 45,000 chance...
hoodfan89 3 years ago
isnt that same as the risk of having a car crash on the road or something?
cobanc90 3 years ago
No, the odds of having a car crash on the road is 1 in 6000, which are much more higher odds than Apophis slamming against the Earth.
pato2747 3 years ago
its going to hit 1 in 5000 so there is a chance that we will surivive just pray guys pray!!

.034 AU?! Come on, larger asteroids passed at closer distances and we're still alive and kickin'

2012 = Fake
2029 = Wont hit
2036 = 90% chance it won't hit
This generation = Earth will survive
Now go to bed!

Don't forget The Lucifer Project. That's suppose to depopulate the planet by 80% in July of this year. So, technically it's 2008.

Asteroid hitting the Earth? Not a chance, Chuck Noris will back hand it into oblivion! Just kidding, i heard on tv years ago that even a dust cloud could move an asteroid.

Keep on waiting for an asteroid to hit the Earth...we are all going to get old and die until that unlikely day!..because that's the truth we have to live get old and die one after one....not all together...egoists! ;)

Here are the facts bottom line...
18305 4 years ago
don't worry we will die in 9 days jan,29,2008
maddog326 4 years ago 2
Im getting a little confused hear watching all these apophis videos. Is the darn thing "predicted" to hit us in 2029 or 2036? I heard it was going to "skim" PAST us, between earth and our satalites in 2029, and come back around for 2036 and strike? Something like that... I guess no one really knows fact right now...
CotardDelusion 4 years ago
impact probability for April 13, 2036, is estimated at 1 in 45,000
spamhearn 4 years ago 2
guys, don't panic^^. the probability of apophis hitting the earth is about 2,7022% (2,7% in 2029 and 0,0022 in 2036/37)

Es muy improbable que Apophis golpeará la tierra.

if that hit the earth are we all gona die??
gautis2 4 years ago
no, just about 10 millions
m1omg 4 years ago
maybe. but if you don't directly die, the science will die!
no oil anymore. no gold no metall, no anything. and there will be a new icetime.
tomili1986 4 years ago
naw some ppl hundreds of thousands of miles away will likely die of tidal waves, radiation, dust storms, and things like that but not everyone will die from directly from the impact, and i say the tidal waves will be no bigger than 2-8 times the size of the empire state building
seansaysrawr21 4 years ago
hes showing first the year 2029 when Apophis misses, 7 years later it will come again and it WILL hit the earth several hundreds of sientests have prooven this.
Rasmus55 4 years ago
the probability is 1 to 1200000
m1omg 4 years ago
no its 1:45000
jxvwp 4 years ago
Rasmus55: There is a 1 in 45,000 chance that Apophis will pass through a "graviational keyhole" during its near-earth encounter in 2029, and that will adjust its orbit to hit the earth 7 years later. But the "keyhole" is no more than 400 meters across, and recent observations have led astronomers to classify it as a class 0 on the Torino scale. If it passes through a keyhole, it will hit the earth in 2036. But it's HIGHLY unlikely it will do so.

well it's about time that the world ends ,, people u still have few years before u are judged so take this opportunity to be good with each other ... and ask for murcy .. anyway ,,,everything is possible ... as for me i consider that apophis is not gona hit the earth after 30 yrs from now the earth wont be in same gravitty center so it wont hit us.. but everything is possible

what i dont understand is .... has appophis been orbiting the sun for a long time? and if so how come we are just noticing it now? and by the looks of it if it has been orbiting the sun for a long time judgeing by its path it will always interfere with the earths orbit
nocontrol06 4 years ago
it doesnt matter because the world is gonna end in 2012 its called the apocalypse. where the sun is gonna have storms then that will cause earthquakes hurricanes volcano eruptions you name it. it was even a non fiction movie and a book.
