To make sodium acetate, take vinegar and add baking soda. the reaction will produce carbon dioxide, which will evaporate, sodium acetate, and water. You will need to boil the solution to get rid of the water. Enjoy your sodium acetate.
You get some sodium acetate and mix enough of it with water to supersaturate the water dong all this while heating the water. Let it cool in the fridge and pour the solution into a container with a few of the sodium acetate crystals which will start the reaction. When it turns back into solid the solid is exothermic.
I am going to have this experiment at school : ) (Science show) I think it is very great experiment. But do I have to cool it in fridge ? Is vibrating from moving its container will cause it freeze too ? Reply please. Thank you ^^
Yes you do need to cool it in the fridge. Moving it will start the reaction if all the crystals are not in a liquid form. Makes sure it is heated fully to a liquid, makes sure the container edges are clean and move slowly :-)
can i reverse it as my son was after an experiment that was reversible ordered some off ebay have to wait till my mrs goes to work one evening and get out the saucepans!!
Sodium acetate mixed in with water until the water can not take any more sodium acetate crystals. Water is not gel, more like a slightly thicker water.
Is this ice eatable?

does it react with metal or something
dnave21 10 months ago
No it reacts with any impurities, i.e. a sodium acetate cyrsyat. or an impurity in the glass etcs. Just giving it a bump can set it off.

how do you make sodium acetate???
shortymiget52 1 year ago
You buy it from chemical shops
panos101010 1 year ago
@shortymiget52 You can make it with Vinegar + Baking soda, but it has a yellowish brown color, search for it on here!
joeybradley98 1 year ago
@shortymiget52 You can make it from 70g of baking soda and 1L of 5% vinegar.
Make sure you boil the unnecessary water which is about 400mL.

If I ever win a lot of money I'll buy a damn bean bag filled with NaCH3COO!!!
I just don't completely understand how contact with a solid object triggers the reaction, or what the reaction exactly is.

Yes, reheat the mitcture in a saucepan and it will return to its liquid form. You can redo the experiment forever.
